Kimberly Barrett is a highly respected legal operations leader, U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and passionate advocate for early career development. With over 25 years of professional experience in the legal industry, she brings a rare blend of operational expertise, personal resilience, and strategic leadership to every organization she serves. Her story is one of grit, transformation, and an unwavering commitment to helping others thrive in the professional world—especially those, like her, who come from humble beginnings.
Currently serving as Director of Legal Operations at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, Kimberly leads the strategic planning, global business management, and operational transformation initiatives of the newly formed Legal Operations Department for one of the world’s premier law firms. In this role, she works across multiple business units to streamline processes, manage complex projects, and elevate service delivery. Her high emotional intelligence and team leadership skills have earned her a reputation for fostering environments where professionals can grow, develop, and deliver their best work.
Prior to her role at Simpson Thacher, Kimberly spent nearly 25 years at Latham & Watkins, where she rose through the ranks from part-time night receptionist to Director. Her work included overseeing large-scale strategic planning efforts, leading legal operations teams, driving process improvements, and mentoring junior staff. Her evolution at Latham is a testament to her personal drive and professional acumen, reflecting her ability to grow within a high-performance environment.
Kimberly’s academic achievements underscore her lifelong commitment to learning. She holds a Master of Business Administration from Pepperdine University’s Graziadio Business School and a Master of Science in Paralegal Studies from The George Washington University. She also earned a B.A. in Justice Studies from Montclair State University and an AAS in Paralegal Studies from Berkeley College. These degrees were not only milestones but also tools that helped her become a force for change within the legal field.
A proud first-generation college graduate, Kimberly grew up with limited means, relying on public assistance during her early years. Despite those obstacles, she successfully paved her own way through school and into a leadership career. Her journey gives her a unique, empathetic lens when mentoring and developing early career talent. She knows firsthand what it takes to succeed without a roadmap, and she’s passionate about helping young professionals—particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds—navigate their own paths.
Kimberly’s leadership is defined by a strategic mindset, ability to manage risk, and drive for performance improvement. She excels in aligning operational goals with organizational strategy, building scalable systems, and inspiring trust through clear, confident decision-making. Whether it’s navigating a departmental transformation or coaching a junior employee through a career crossroads, Kimberly leads with purpose and compassion.
Beyond legal operations, Kimberly’s passion lies in mentoring young adults. She believes that professional success is possible for anyone who is hardworking and willing to learn how to leverage available resources. Her professional philosophy is built on accountability, resilience, and self-discipline—principles that served her well during her time in the U.S. Marine Corps and continue to guide her leadership style today.
During her service in the Marine Corps Reserve (1987–1992), Kimberly operated heavy motor vehicles in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm. Her military experience instilled in her a strong sense of discipline, commitment, and tactical execution—all of which have translated seamlessly into her corporate leadership career. Her military decorations include the National Defense Service Medal and the Southwest Asia Service Medal, among others.
Kimberly is currently seeking board opportunities where she can contribute her deep knowledge of legal operations, strategic planning, and people development. She is especially interested in organizations across the legal, healthcare, pharmaceutical, and higher education sectors that are committed to nurturing early career talent and fostering inclusive workplace cultures. With no preference for company size, her focus is on impact and alignment with her values.
Above all, Kimberly believes in giving back. Her personal story and professional journey are powerful reminders that with the right guidance, support, and grit, anyone can rise. She’s ready to bring that mindset—and a wealth of practical knowledge—to organizations that are ready to elevate their operations and their people.
