Mark Brumfield: Transforming Ambitions into Achievements; Where Strategic Insight Ignites Leadership Potential.

    Published on:

Mark Brumfield is a seasoned executive with nearly three decades of expertise in capital markets, financial institutions consulting, and business development. He recently started MB coaching, a private coaching practice focused on empowering executives and high achievers.  He enjoys being of service to others and collaborating to create outcomes better than what would occur by default. His practice, based in Atlanta, Georgia, is centered around providing tailored coaching solutions and is on track to achieve International Coaching Federation and Co-Active Training Institute certifications.

Prior to launching MB Coaching, Mark’s career was marked by significant contributions at Abelian Partners, where he excelled as a Managing Director from October 2021 to November 2023. At Abelian Partners, Mark leveraged his extensive professional network to access decision-makers at regional and large banks throughout the U.S. and deliver Agile-oriented consulting solutions focused on credit, technology, and capital markets. His role involved providing subject matter expertise and leading the firm’s business development efforts.  He studied and implemented Bunnell Idea Group’s “Grow Big” business development system which significantly improved the impact of client/prospect outreach efforts and internal communication. Mark also led solution workshops for internal leaders and executive presentations.

Mark’s tenure at Wells Fargo Securities, from 2009 to August 2017, showcased his advisory skills and prowess in capital markets. As a Managing Director in Debt Capital Markets – Syndicated Lending, he directed teams responsible for syndicated corporate lending and acquisition finance for major clients in the Oil & Gas and Power & Utility sectors. His role involved increasing the firm’s visibility with C-suite client  management and upgrading the firm’s role from lending syndicate member to the client’s  “lead bank”.  His role included negotiating, structuring, and arranging high profile multi-lender financings, typically ranging from $500 million to $3 billion and involving up to 30 lenders.  Mark mentored junior professionals to scale his team’s ability to advise clients and execute approximately 50 transactions per year.  Much of his work was focused on corporate event – driven financings and on advising newly formed joint ventures, spin – offs, and master limited partnerships on arranging initial debt financing, financing early growth through acquisitions, and debt capital structure at IPO.  The firm maintained the position of most active arranger of syndicated loans in the U.S. for both Oil & Gas and Power & Utilities throughout his tenure. His focus on collaborative teamwork and relationship development also led to significant contributions across the firm’s broader investment banking and capital markets platform.

Prior to Wells Fargo Bank acquiring Wachovia Bank during the financial crisis, Mark was a key player at Wachovia Securities in Charlotte, where he served as Managing Director and Director in loan syndications and leveraged finance from 2002-2008. During this period, he founded the firm’s large corporate loan syndications and acquisition finance efforts, notably increasing its market share in the U.S. Power & Utility industry from 9th to 1st place within three years. He was promoted to Managing Director and asked to expand his responsibilities into Oil & Gas in 2005 after demonstrating to senior lenders the effectiveness of providing clients with corporate finance expertise and guidance vs a strictly product focused approach.

Mark’s career began at Wachovia Capital Markets, LLC in Atlanta where he was a Senior Vice President in Capital Markets and Loan Syndications.  He originally worked as a corporate finance generalist advising leveraged middle market and large corporate clients on capital structure, loan syndications, high yield and other debt placements, and derivatives.  Eventually, he determined a focus on loan syndications would maximize his impact advising clients on aligning capital structure and financing strategy with broader strategic objectives.  In loan syndications, he worked across a broad range of industries and managed the development of the team’s junior professionals.

Mark holds an MBA in Finance from Vanderbilt University – Owen Graduate School of Management and a BBA in Finance from Mississippi State University. His educational background, combined with his extensive professional experience, has equipped him with a profound understanding of financial services and business strategy. Mark’s expertise in financial markets is further underscored by his serving as panelist at conferences hosted by SNL Energy Finance and Thomson Reuters.  He maintained Series 7 and Series 24 securities industry licenses throughout his investment banking and capital markets career.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Mark has been actively involved in volunteer work with Mental Health America, where he served on the Board of Directors from June 2016 to May 2022. His commitment to advancing mental health awareness and combating stigma underscores his dedication to social impact.
