Jason Barnes is a transformational executive, educator, and commercial growth leader with more than 25 years of experience spanning K–12 education, educational technology, publishing, revenue leadership, and organizational development. Throughout his career, he has combined a deep commitment to educational impact with the commercial discipline required to scale businesses, strengthen profitability, and build enduring customer relationships. His ability to connect mission, people, products, and performance has made him a trusted leader among corporate boards, private equity investors, executive teams, school superintendents, and education partners around the world.
Jason began his professional journey in education, serving as a humanities and social studies teacher, mentor, coach, and instructional leader. His years in the classroom gave him a firsthand understanding of the challenges educators, students, and school systems face, while also shaping his belief that effective leadership begins with listening, trust, and a clear sense of purpose. His early work with Outward Bound further developed his approach to leadership by teaching him how to guide teams through uncertainty, encourage resilience, resolve conflict, and create growth through challenge and reflection.
After establishing a strong foundation as an educator, Jason transitioned into educational publishing and technology with McGraw-Hill Education. He advanced from territory sales responsibilities to District Sales Manager, leading a team across New York and New England while managing complex sales cycles for academic, applied, print, and digital curriculum solutions. His consultative approach, market knowledge, and commitment to customer outcomes helped him repeatedly exceed revenue expectations and earn multiple Golden Eagle and Pacesetter Awards.
Jason continued his career progression at Discovery Education, where he held increasingly senior roles in partnership development and commercial leadership. He helped launch Science and Social Studies digital Techbooks across the United States and Canada, translated early customer feedback into product improvements, and established new educational offerings as commercially viable solutions. His ability to align product development, sales strategy, professional learning, and district priorities allowed him to consistently outperform ambitious revenue goals.
As Vice President of Education Partnerships at Discovery Education, Jason expanded his personal revenue responsibility from approximately $7 million to more than $24 million while frequently exceeding annual targets. He led regional directors and account executives across 27 states and cultivated long-term relationships with superintendents, curriculum leaders, education associations, and government stakeholders. His work extended beyond selling products; he designed partnerships that supported digital transformation, personalized learning, STEM education, educational equity, professional development, and measurable student achievement.
Jason later served as Chief Revenue Officer of Finalsite, a private equity-backed K–12 technology platform serving schools in more than 120 countries. As a member of the executive leadership team, he oversaw business development, enterprise sales, customer success, customer support, revenue operations, and sales enablement. During his tenure, annual revenue grew from approximately $32 million to more than $150 million, while EBITDA increased from $15 million to $75 million, representing a fivefold expansion.
His leadership at Finalsite extended across organic growth, operational transformation, product strategy, and mergers and acquisitions. Jason helped evolve the company from a single-product organization into a four-product platform, creating meaningful cross-sell and upsell opportunities while improving net revenue retention. He also played a central role in executing and integrating three strategic acquisitions, ensuring that customers remained supported throughout software conversions, organizational change, and platform expansion.
Jason is particularly skilled at building the infrastructure required for sustained commercial success. He has redesigned technology stacks, hiring profiles, sales processes, coaching cadences, organizational structures, and revenue operations to improve performance and accountability. By professionalizing the sales organization at Finalsite, he helped increase net-new business contracts by 98% over three years while maintaining gross client retention of approximately 96% across a global customer base.
In addition to his commercial achievements, Jason is recognized as a thought leader and compelling public speaker. He has presented to audiences of hundreds at client meetings, education conferences, national symposia, and executive events, speaking on topics such as change leadership, digital curriculum, personalized learning, STEM, equity, customer success, and organizational growth. His ability to communicate with both corporate and educational audiences reflects the credibility he has built as a former teacher, experienced operator, and senior executive.
Jason’s leadership philosophy is grounded in systems thinking, continuous improvement, and a genuine investment in people. He believes growth is most sustainable when organizations align their mission, commercial strategy, operating model, talent, and customer experience. Throughout his career, he has recruited, coached, and mentored leaders while building cultures defined by collaboration, high expectations, professional development, and shared accountability.
His global experience also gives him a broad perspective on market development and customer engagement. Jason has worked with organizations and school communities across more than 120 countries, including extensive experience in the United Kingdom and Canada. This exposure has strengthened his ability to understand regional differences, navigate complex stakeholder environments, and adapt commercial strategies to diverse markets.
Outside of his executive career, Jason brings the same endurance and curiosity to his personal pursuits. He completed a 2,100-mile thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro as part of an educational expedition that engaged students through geography and STEM learning. These experiences reflect the resilience, preparation, teamwork, and long-term focus that characterize his approach to organizational leadership.
Today, Jason is seeking board and advisory opportunities where he can support executives in evaluating business performance, identifying growth opportunities, launching new products, strengthening commercial systems, and scaling responsibly. He is especially interested in education, K–12 technology, publishing, government technology, municipal and state organizations, nonprofits, and purpose-driven businesses with approximately $1 million to $100 million in annual recurring revenue. His combination of educational expertise, executive leadership, strategic planning, M&A experience, and commercial execution positions him to help organizations increase both their revenue and their broader impact.
