“How you do anything is how you do everything.”
Thomas “Tom” Nelson is a global talent acquisition leader, entrepreneur, sports business executive, and operations strategist whose career reflects a consistent ability to build, scale, and strengthen organizations through people, process, technology, and purposeful leadership. With more than a decade of professional experience spanning talent acquisition, sports, business development, operations, sponsorship strategy, sales, and entrepreneurship, Tom has developed a leadership perspective shaped by both corporate environments and firsthand business ownership. He has led teams across North America, Latin America, APAC, and EMEA while remaining grounded in a philosophy that sustainable performance begins with accountability, strong relationships, and a willingness to continuously improve.
Tom’s professional journey has been defined by progression through increasingly complex leadership responsibilities. Early in his career with PepsiCo, he demonstrated an ability to improve both commercial and operational performance. As a Customer Management Senior Associate, he cultivated relationships that contributed to significant growth across major beverage brands, including Rockstar, Mountain Dew, and Gatorade. He later moved into delivery leadership, where his collaborative approach to route optimization helped elevate performance within the Penn East Market and dramatically improve the standing of his operation within the broader Northeast region. These experiences established an important foundation for Tom’s leadership philosophy: the people closest to a challenge often possess invaluable insight into how to solve it, and leaders achieve stronger outcomes when they empower those individuals to contribute.
Following roles spanning technology sales, entrepreneurship, and staffing, Tom increasingly concentrated his career on talent acquisition and organizational performance. At Robert Half, he developed and executed recruiting strategies, cultivated relationships with business leaders, and demonstrated an ability to connect workforce needs with measurable business results. His experience in staffing and recruiting ultimately positioned him for a significant chapter of his career with Randstad Sourceright supporting Google, where his responsibilities expanded from individual recruiting performance into team management, global program leadership, operational design, and strategic talent initiatives.
Supporting Google, Tom has operated within one of the world’s most sophisticated talent environments. His work has included leading large, globally distributed teams, designing recruiting infrastructure, developing performance frameworks, improving screening and hiring processes, and partnering with senior stakeholders on workforce strategy. He helped scale organizational models from North American implementation to global operations spanning EMEA, APAC, and Latin America. He also developed and utilized performance measures designed to provide leaders with greater visibility into candidate engagement, pipeline quality, and recruiting outcomes. His focus on operational improvement contributed to meaningful reductions in screening and hiring timelines while maintaining a strong emphasis on candidate quality and stakeholder satisfaction.
Technology and innovation have become increasingly important components of Tom’s leadership approach. Rather than viewing artificial intelligence simply as an emerging trend, he has explored its practical application within recruiting and operational workflows. His experience includes leveraging platforms and technologies such as Gemini, Claude, ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and other AI-enabled tools to improve screening, candidate recycling, productivity, and decision-making. Combined with his experience using recruiting platforms, business intelligence datasets, CRM reporting, and KPI dashboards, this work reflects Tom’s broader belief that technology is most valuable when it strengthens human judgment, eliminates unnecessary friction, and allows teams to concentrate their energy on higher-value activities.
Alongside his corporate career, Tom has built an equally meaningful leadership record within sports and youth athlete development. As Owner and President of Canes Illinois Baseball, he helped scale the organization’s top-line revenue from approximately $500,000 to $1.2 million while expanding its geographic footprint and increasing its coaching organization from seven to 22 coaches. During his tenure, the program grew from 58 to 127 total college commitments, while Tom developed strategic relationships with community organizations, baseball programs, healthcare organizations, and national brands. He also personally secured and managed more than $25,000 in corporate sponsorships, demonstrating his ability to connect organizational growth with partnership development and commercial strategy.
Tom’s entrepreneurial involvement in baseball also includes co-founding Spades Baseball, where he helped transform a program that began with only three athletes into an organization serving 85 active athletes by the end of 2025. The venture expanded from one location to a multi-site operation supported by strategic partnerships, while its coaching infrastructure and player-development programming evolved alongside its growth. Tom helped implement technology-enabled athlete progress reporting utilizing tools such as Trackman, Pitch Lab, and Pocket Radar, reinforcing his commitment to combining coaching expertise with measurable performance data. His experience in youth sports provides him with an especially valuable perspective on organizational growth, athlete development, parent and stakeholder relationships, coaching quality, partnerships, and the business realities of scaling sports organizations.
His connection to the sports industry extends well beyond baseball operations. Through consulting and project work, Tom has contributed to organizations including the Cleveland Browns, Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, AZ Alkmaar, Lagardère Sports, and Las Vegas Motor Speedway. His assignments have encompassed sponsorship strategy, fan engagement, athlete monetization, digital activation, fundraising, brand partnerships, and social media strategy. Internationally, his consulting experience has included engagements in Italy and the Netherlands, including presentations to senior executives and board-level audiences. These experiences, coupled with his broader professional exposure throughout Europe, Latin America, APAC, Canada, and Mexico, have strengthened his ability to consider business challenges through a global and cross-cultural lens.
Tom’s educational foundation further distinguishes his perspective at the intersection of business and sports. He earned both a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Sports Administration from Ohio University and completed his undergraduate studies at West Virginia University, where his academic accomplishments included Magna Cum Laude recognition and multiple Dean’s List honors. His commitment to continuous learning has remained active throughout his career, including additional professional development involving artificial intelligence, emerging technology, executive communication, and analytical tools. For Tom, education is not confined to formal degrees; reading, learning, experimentation, and professional curiosity remain integral parts of how he approaches leadership.
Just as important as his corporate accomplishments is Tom’s understanding of adversity. His professional journey has included the experience of closing a business and navigating the uncertainty and lessons that followed. Rather than allowing those experiences to define the limits of his career, he used them to sharpen his judgment and develop greater empathy for entrepreneurs and leaders confronting difficult decisions. He has subsequently experienced organizations from numerous perspectives—as an entrepreneur, salesperson, operator, recruiter, manager, consultant, coach, program leader, and business owner. That breadth gives him an appreciation for both strategic decisions made at the top of an organization and the operational realities faced by the people responsible for executing them.
Tom is now particularly interested in bringing that perspective to board and advisory service, with an emphasis on youth sports, sports organizations, sports-related businesses, talent acquisition, recruiting technology, and organizations where human capital is central to growth. He offers boards and executive teams more than functional recruiting expertise. His value lies in understanding how organizations build leadership capacity, establish scalable processes, use data to improve decision-making, develop strategic partnerships, adopt emerging technologies, and translate ambitious objectives into accountable execution. He is comfortable working with organizations at different stages of maturity and does not limit his interest according to employee count or annual recurring revenue.
At the center of Tom’s professional philosophy is the belief expressed in his personal motto: “How you do anything is how you do everything.” For him, leadership is reflected not only in major strategic decisions but also in preparation, consistency, responsiveness, accountability, and the standards demonstrated in everyday work. His passion for baseball and football, commitment to reading and lifelong learning, connection to West Virginia, coaching experience, and history of community involvement further reflect an individual whose professional ambitions remain connected to mentorship, development, and service. As he looks toward board and advisory opportunities, Tom brings the perspective of a leader who has experienced success, setbacks, rebuilding, rapid growth, global complexity, and entrepreneurial responsibility—and who understands that meaningful leadership ultimately requires turning those experiences into value for others.
