Mitchell Harris: Growth-Focused Leadership, Owner’s Mindset, Board-Level Impact

Published on:

“Keep moving forward. Standing still is falling behind.”

Mitchell Harris is a growth and digital executive who became an owner-operator and capital allocator. Over more than two decades he has scaled revenue at a roughly $1 billion B2B ecommerce distributor, doubled subscribers at a venture-backed subscription company, and led a $200 million advertising portfolio at Meta. Today he owns and operates businesses through Vertex Communication Group and Claymont Capital Partners. That combination is rare at a board table: he speaks growth, P&L, and capital allocation in the same conversation, because he has sat in each seat. Guided by a personal standard he returns to often, “Keep moving forward. Standing still is falling behind,” he approaches every opportunity with an owner’s bias for progress, accountability, and disciplined execution.

Raised in the Detroit area, Mitchell developed a strong work ethic from his family’s blue-collar roots. His father worked for an automotive supplier, while his grandfather dedicated thirty-five years to the General Motors production line. These early influences instilled in him the values of perseverance, integrity, humility, and respect for hard work that continue to define his leadership style today. Throughout his professional journey, Mitchell has remained committed to building organizations where people are empowered to succeed, collaboration is encouraged, and disciplined execution supports ambitious strategic goals. His people-first philosophy has enabled him to develop high-performing teams while fostering cultures built on trust, accountability, and shared purpose.

Mitchell’s career began at Procter & Gamble, where he developed expertise in customer business development, merchandising strategy, retail operations, and national account management. Working with major retailers including Walmart and Rite Aid, he managed multimillion-dollar brand portfolios while leading cross-functional initiatives that improved merchandising effectiveness, increased sales performance, and strengthened customer partnerships. These formative years provided him with deep operational knowledge of consumer behavior, strategic planning, financial management, and large-scale organizational execution. The disciplined leadership culture of Procter & Gamble established the analytical and operational framework that would become a hallmark of Mitchell’s executive career.

Building upon this foundation, Mitchell transitioned into strategic consulting and media leadership with Viacom’s MTV Scratch division, where he led multidisciplinary teams delivering consumer insight, digital strategy, and innovation initiatives for Fortune 500 clients. His work helped major organizations rethink customer experiences, develop next-generation marketing strategies, and strengthen engagement with emerging consumer audiences. This period expanded his ability to connect market intelligence with business strategy while refining his expertise in organizational transformation, product innovation, and customer-centric growth initiatives. His ability to bridge analytical thinking with creative problem-solving quickly distinguished him as an executive capable of driving meaningful business change across multiple industries.

Mitchell’s leadership reached an even broader scale during his tenure at Meta, where he served in executive leadership roles responsible for strategic partnerships, business development, and revenue growth across some of the company’s largest enterprise advertising portfolios. Managing a portfolio exceeding $200 million while leading teams of media specialists and analysts, he partnered directly with chief marketing officers and executive leadership teams of high-growth companies to develop innovative digital advertising strategies and accelerate business performance. He also played an instrumental role in developing AI-driven advertising solutions and emerging commerce technologies, demonstrating his ability to recognize market shifts and translate technological innovation into measurable business outcomes. His experience at Meta further strengthened his expertise in digital transformation, platform strategy, executive leadership, and enterprise-scale growth.

Following Meta, Mitchell joined Luminary as Senior Vice President of Growth and Marketing during a critical stage of the company’s evolution as a venture-backed subscription business. Serving on the executive leadership team, he doubled the company’s paying subscriber base while reducing customer acquisition costs by sixty percent through disciplined marketing optimization, operational efficiencies, and data-driven decision-making. Beyond revenue growth, he transformed internal capabilities by bringing key marketing functions in-house, reducing operating expenses while increasing organizational agility. His regular collaboration with investors and the company’s board of directors provided valuable governance experience and reinforced his ability to communicate complex business performance, strategic initiatives, and long-term growth plans to diverse stakeholders.

Mitchell’s next executive challenge came at SupplyHouse.com, where he became the organization’s first Chief Marketing Officer recruited from outside the founding leadership team. Joining one of the nation’s leading B2B ecommerce distributors during a period of exceptional growth, he assumed responsibility for marketing, product management, and strategic initiatives across a business generating approximately one billion dollars in annual revenue. Under his leadership, the company achieved approximately two-and-a-half times revenue growth while managing a forty-million-dollar operating budget and successfully reorganizing a team of more than forty professionals. He led enterprise-wide digital transformation initiatives by implementing sophisticated marketing technology infrastructure, including customer data platforms, business intelligence systems, marketing automation, experimentation platforms, and advanced analytics capabilities. Working closely with executive leadership and the board throughout the uncertainty of the COVID era, Mitchell helped position the organization for continued growth while balancing operational excellence, customer acquisition, technology modernization, and profitability.

Today, Mitchell combines executive leadership with entrepreneurial ownership as Chief Executive Officer of Vertex Communication Group and Managing Director of Claymont Capital Partners. Through Vertex, he leads a respected digital marketing operations firm serving associations, publishers, and organizations that rely on sophisticated email marketing and customer engagement solutions. Through Claymont Capital Partners, he actively acquires and operates lower-middle-market businesses, applying disciplined capital allocation, operational improvement, and strategic growth planning to create long-term enterprise value. He also co-founded CreditJet, an innovative fintech company developed in partnership with Equifax to improve financial literacy and credit accessibility for small business owners. These experiences have broadened Mitchell’s perspective beyond executive management, giving him firsthand insight into ownership, acquisitions, operational integration, and long-term value creation that few executives possess.

Mitchell’s leadership extends well beyond corporate performance into meaningful governance and community service. For eight years, he served on the Board of Directors of City Harvest, one of the largest food rescue organizations in the United States, where he contributed to the Governance, Human Resources, and Strategic Planning Committees. His board service strengthened his understanding of fiduciary responsibility, executive oversight, succession planning, and nonprofit governance while reinforcing his commitment to mission-driven leadership. Throughout his executive career, he has consistently partnered with company boards and investor groups by preparing strategic presentations, delivering quarterly performance updates, supporting executive decision-making, and helping leadership teams navigate complex organizational challenges. These experiences have prepared him to serve as a thoughtful and highly effective board member capable of balancing governance responsibilities with practical operational insight.

Mitchell’s professional expertise spans growth strategy, go-to-market execution, digital transformation, B2B and B2C ecommerce, marketing technology, customer acquisition, business development, organizational leadership, product management, capital allocation, and private equity value creation. He is best suited to independent director and advisory roles at PE-backed and growth-stage B2B, ecommerce, and marketing-technology companies where growth, go-to-market, and digital transformation drive enterprise value. He has successfully operated within Fortune 500 enterprises, venture-backed startups, founder-led businesses, nonprofit organizations, and privately held companies, allowing him to adapt his leadership approach across organizations of varying size, complexity, and maturity. He is particularly passionate about helping companies build scalable operating models, leverage technology to improve decision-making, and accelerate profitable growth through disciplined strategy and execution. Fluent in English with conversational French proficiency, Mitchell also appreciates the value of diverse perspectives and collaborative leadership in an increasingly global business environment.

Mitchell earned his Master of Business Administration from Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Michigan. He has further strengthened his leadership through fellowships with Management Leadership for Tomorrow and New Majority Capital, reflecting his commitment to continuous learning and executive development. Outside of the boardroom, Mitchell enjoys scuba diving, cooking, and spending quality time with his wife and two children. Whether advising executives, leading organizations, investing in businesses, or serving on governing boards, he remains driven by the belief that sustainable success is built through thoughtful leadership, disciplined execution, meaningful relationships, and an unwavering commitment to continuous progress.
