“I may be the person you root for; just give me a chance, and I may even become your hero.”
James De Leo is an educator, entrepreneur, board consultant, and organizational leader whose career reflects a distinctive combination of business acumen, educational leadership, strategic thinking, creative problem-solving, and community service. Over the course of approximately 15 years, James has built experience across education, entrepreneurship, special education services, retail, marketing, digital strategy, organizational governance, and business operations. Today, he brings these perspectives together as a Board Consultant with Boardsi and as Founder and Chief Executive Officer of De Leo Enterprise, LLC. His professional philosophy is grounded in careful observation, candid analysis, practical problem-solving, and a conviction that meaningful leadership requires more than identifying challenges—it requires helping people determine what can work and creating a realistic path toward achieving it. His Boardsi work similarly emphasizes innovation, stronger decision-making, sustainable strategies, and translating ambitious ideas into actionable goals.
James began his career with experiences that placed him directly at the intersection of service, operations, sales, and customer relationships. His early professional roles included administrative work within the Santa Ana Unified School District and several positions with Macy’s, where he progressed through customer-facing and leadership responsibilities that included sales, commissioned selling, cashier leadership, merchandising, and customer engagement. These experiences provided James with a practical education in consumer behavior, presentation, service excellence, sales performance, teamwork, and the importance of understanding what motivates people. That foundation remains relevant to his interest in fashion, entertainment, events, and other consumer-facing industries, where the ability to recognize trends and understand customer expectations can be as consequential as traditional operational knowledge.
Education subsequently became a defining pillar of James’s professional identity. After working in special education program coordination, tutoring, and instructional roles, he developed a career serving students with diverse learning needs. At Professional Tutors of America, James served as a Non-Public Agency/Special Education Program Coordinator, coordinating services for students with Individualized Education Programs while acting as a liaison among school districts, families, service providers, and educational staff. The position involved program effectiveness, compliance, case assignments, and staff support, giving him early experience navigating complex stakeholder environments in which successful outcomes depended upon communication, organization, accountability, and collaboration.
James later advanced through the Santa Ana Unified School District from substitute teaching and a teaching internship into mathematics instruction and departmental leadership. As a Special Education Department Chair at Saddleback High School, James provided instructional leadership, supported teachers, served as a resource for curriculum and instructional practices, and acted as a liaison between his department and site and district administration. He currently serves as a Mild/Moderate mathematics teacher at Santa Ana High School, where his work centers on specialized mathematics instruction, individualized educational needs, academic growth, independence, and post-secondary readiness. His commitment to the profession was further reflected in his nomination for America’s Favorite Teacher in 2026, while his membership in Pi Lambda Theta represents another dimension of his longstanding engagement with educational excellence.
Entrepreneurship has developed alongside James’s educational career rather than apart from it. In 2014, he established the tutoring enterprise now known as Math by James De Leo, building a business around personalized mathematics instruction for students ranging from fourth grade through college-level entry mathematics. That entrepreneurial foundation eventually expanded into a broader portfolio. As Founder and Chief Executive Officer of De Leo Enterprise, LLC, James is responsible for organizational vision, strategy, long-term growth, operational excellence, financial sustainability, partnerships, business opportunities, performance, innovation, and client service. His portfolio brings together education, consulting, bookkeeping and advisory services, digital strategy, branding, and creative work, demonstrating his ability to move between analytical and creative disciplines while maintaining an executive perspective on organizational performance.
Through De Leo Digital Studio, where he serves as President and Creative Director, James applies his business leadership to branding, website development, digital marketing, visual communications, and creative strategy. His responsibilities combine organizational vision and client relationships with hands-on creative direction and business development. This work complements formal development in digital marketing and e-commerce and documented skills spanning marketing strategy, campaign management, customer relationship management, e-commerce, digital channels, and branding. Together with his earlier retail background, these experiences have given James a perspective that connects strategy with the realities of brand identity, customer expectations, communication, and market positioning.
James’s business capabilities extend into areas that are less visible to customers but essential to organizational sustainability. He serves as President of De Leo Advisory & Bookkeeping, where his responsibilities encompass operations, financial services, client relationships, bookkeeping, tax preparation, advisory work, and long-term organizational growth. James has supplemented practical experience with coursework and professional development in accounting, QuickBooks, bookkeeping, payroll, taxation, project management, human resources, and related business disciplines. Although he does not identify finance and accounting as his preferred industries for board placement, this knowledge provides financial and operational literacy that complements his broader strengths in strategy, management, entrepreneurship, education, marketing, and governance.
Board and advisory leadership represent a natural extension of James’s career. As a Board Consultant with Boardsi, he draws upon experience in education, organizational leadership, communications, technology, digital strategy, and community engagement to support organizations and leadership teams confronting growth, innovation, and operational challenges. James approaches advisory leadership as an opportunity to collaborate with executives and entrepreneurs, challenge conventional thinking constructively, exchange perspectives across industries, and help transform ambitious concepts into achievable organizational goals. His continuing governance education further encompasses corporate governance, board-member essentials, strategic leadership and innovation, cyber-risk governance, leadership, strategic planning, and risk management.
James’s leadership experience also extends deeply into professional associations, educational governance, alumni organizations, and community service. He has maintained longstanding involvement with the Danish American Club, including board leadership, while his involvement with Pi Sigma Epsilon has progressed from collegiate leadership into alumni and strategic-planning activities. His organizational affiliations have also included the California State University, Fullerton Alumni Association, Pi Lambda Theta, Phi Delta Kappa International, the Santa Ana Educators Association, and business and education organizations. These experiences have repeatedly placed James in environments where leadership depends on listening to different constituencies, building relationships, balancing priorities, maintaining accountability, and advancing a shared mission.
Academic achievement and lifelong learning have remained consistent threads throughout James’s progression. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Management from California State University, Fullerton and a Master of Arts in Secondary Education and Teaching from Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology, followed by advanced preparation in special education. His professional development has continued well beyond his formal degrees, reflecting an interest in acquiring knowledge that can be applied across organizational contexts. James’s range of study—from education and mathematics to project management, human resources, digital marketing, taxation, accounting, risk, and corporate governance—illustrates a multidisciplinary approach to leadership rather than dependence on a single professional lens.
Recognition has accompanied James’s commitment to development from an early stage. He earned the Eagle Scout rank in 2007, a milestone associated in his professional history with service and leadership, and later competed through California Phi Beta Lambda in business disciplines including sales presentation, marketing analysis and decision-making, and sports marketing and management. His organizational history also reflects continued engagement with the National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation, Pi Sigma Epsilon, professional education organizations, and alumni communities. James’s Eagle Scout background and subsequent organizational involvement reveal a consistent pattern: accepting responsibility, participating actively in institutions, and finding opportunities to contribute rather than remaining a passive member.
James’s international communication capabilities add another dimension to his leadership profile. He reports native or bilingual proficiency in English, French, and Spanish, enabling him to communicate across linguistic and cultural contexts. Combined with years spent teaching, presenting, advising, working with families, serving customers, coordinating programs, and leading organizations, this multilingual capacity supports a communication style centered on accessibility and human connection. James has also brought his communication skills into public-facing settings, including educational presentations and workshops addressing topics such as professional attire and career readiness.
Looking ahead, James is particularly interested in contributing to small- and mid-cap organizations in fashion, education, entertainment, events, and adjacent consumer or creative sectors. These interests bring together several distinct chapters of his career: the customer and merchandising awareness developed in retail, the analytical discipline of mathematics, the human-centered leadership of education, the creative and market perspective of digital strategy, the execution mindset of entrepreneurship, and the accountability required in governance. James is motivated by opportunities where an engaged advisor can observe carefully, ask useful questions, identify overlooked possibilities, communicate candidly, and help leadership move from ideas to action.
At the center of James’s professional identity is a belief in contribution. He describes himself as thorough, direct, concise, analytical, and willing to say what he believes will help an organization advance. His career demonstrates a willingness to move across disciplines, continue learning, assume new responsibilities, and apply lessons from one environment to another. Whether James is helping a student understand mathematics, guiding an organization through strategic questions, developing a brand, managing a business, serving a community organization, or contributing to a boardroom discussion, his objective remains consistent: understand the challenge, identify what is possible, and help people make meaningful progress toward their goals.
