“Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Doing Wrong.”
Elliott Burnside is a seasoned executive, business operator, advisor, and turnaround leader whose professional career spans approximately six decades of progressive responsibility across transportation, logistics, maritime shipping, oil and gas services, construction, automotive retail, consulting, and general business. From his early experience as a shift supervisor to leadership positions as General Manager, President, Managing Director, and Chief Executive Officer, Elliott has developed a rare perspective on how organizations function from the operational front line to the boardroom. His career has been defined by an ability to enter complex business environments, understand the underlying operational and commercial challenges, develop practical solutions, and lead people toward stronger performance. Throughout that journey, he has maintained a fundamental belief that successful organizations require disciplined execution, capable people, satisfied customers, safe operations, and leaders who accept accountability for results.
Elliott’s progression into senior executive leadership was built upon extensive experience in transportation and logistics. During his tenure with United States Lines, he rose to Division Vice President and gained significant international operating exposure, including assignments and responsibilities connected with London, Hong Kong, Europe, and Asia. He later served as President of BMI Transportation, leading a bulk trucking transporter of hazardous materials and further developing his expertise in transportation management, safety, asset utilization, customer relationships, and operational performance. These experiences provided Elliott with an appreciation for businesses in which execution must occur reliably every day and where decisions involving people, equipment, customers, safety, and financial performance have immediate consequences.
His transportation career expanded further when he became President of Crowley Maritime, where his responsibilities included a publicly traded container shipping business serving Central and South America from ports along the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts. Across his maritime and transportation leadership roles, Elliott developed extensive experience in international commerce, market development, asset deployment, operating performance, and customer growth. His career has taken him beyond the United States into the Middle East, South America, Asia, the Caribbean, and Europe, including business exposure in Saudi Arabia, London, and Hong Kong. Working across diverse markets and operating environments strengthened his ability to adapt to different cultures, commercial circumstances, regulatory considerations, and organizational challenges while maintaining a consistent focus on performance and accountability.
Elliott subsequently applied this operating discipline to distressed and underperforming companies. Through executive, consulting, and restructuring assignments, including his work with Carl Marks and his tenure as CEO of Hettinger, he developed substantial experience assessing organizations, identifying performance gaps, establishing priorities, and implementing meaningful change. He has served businesses as a consultant, Chief Restructuring Officer, and CEO, giving him experience approaching challenges from both an advisory and an executive decision-making perspective. His work has centered on improving operating performance and profitability, strengthening organizational structures, improving safety and operating environments, developing personnel, and positioning businesses for sustainable performance. His background in management consulting, due diligence, financial analysis, risk management, business planning, and mergers and acquisitions complements the operational expertise developed throughout his career.
His executive experience also encompasses upstream-to-midstream oil and gas construction and fabrication, where he held CEO-level responsibility, as well as ownership and leadership within construction services. These roles required Elliott to oversee businesses where project execution, workforce leadership, customer commitments, safety, cost management, and asset utilization had to remain closely aligned. His ability to move successfully among transportation, industrial services, construction, and other operationally intensive businesses demonstrates a leadership philosophy that is transferable across industries. Rather than approaching a company solely through the lens of its sector, Elliott focuses on the fundamental drivers of organizational performance: people, processes, customers, assets, strategy, accountability, and financial results.
Elliott has continued to broaden that perspective throughout the later stages of his career. He spent seven years as General Manager of Central Florida Lincoln, bringing decades of executive leadership into the automotive retail environment and gaining another perspective on customer experience, sales performance, team development, and day-to-day business management. He later established PEB Advisors, LLC, where he serves as Managing Partner and provides interim management, company assessments, operational reviews, organizational strategy, process development, distressed-business solutions, performance evaluations, and project management. This combination of corporate leadership, entrepreneurship, consulting, and hands-on management enables Elliott to evaluate organizations through both strategic and practical lenses.
Among Elliott’s strongest capabilities are strategic planning, business development, contract negotiation, change management, team building, process improvement, operations management, supply chain management, and organizational assessment. His professional background also reflects substantial experience in business strategy, financial analysis, risk management, due diligence, mergers and acquisitions, and logistics. He understands that strategy only creates value when an organization can translate it into disciplined execution. Consequently, his leadership approach combines high-level strategic thinking with close attention to operating realities, ensuring that objectives are supported by the people, processes, resources, and accountability necessary to achieve them.
Throughout his career, Elliott has been particularly effective in environments requiring improvement, transition, or decisive leadership. His accomplishments include significant improvements in operating performance and profitability, customer and market growth, stronger safety records and operating environments, expansion of product offerings into international markets, and successful leadership in challenging foreign and domestic situations. His experience restructuring distressed businesses has reinforced the importance of accurately assessing an organization before prescribing solutions. Elliott brings the perspective of an executive who has been responsible for making difficult decisions, communicating those decisions to stakeholders, and remaining accountable for their operational and financial consequences.
Leadership development and communication have also remained important elements of Elliott’s professional identity. He describes himself as a leader, teacher, and trainer, reflecting his belief that strong organizations are created not simply by issuing direction but by developing capable people who understand expectations and take ownership of results. Throughout his career, he has participated in speaking engagements covering a variety of business and leadership topics. His extensive interaction with employees, customers, executives, investors, advisors, and boards has strengthened his ability to communicate across organizational levels and translate complicated operating issues into practical business priorities.
Elliott earned his Bachelor of Science in Transportation and Marketing from Mississippi State University, providing an academic foundation that aligned closely with the transportation and commercial responsibilities that would characterize much of his career. His professional expertise has since expanded far beyond transportation into general management, corporate strategy, restructuring, operational improvement, international business, and executive leadership. He has also served on transportation-related boards during his career, giving him experience with the responsibilities and perspectives associated with organizational governance.
Today, Elliott is particularly interested in contributing his experience to organizations in retail, sporting goods, trucking, distribution, logistics, and general business, while remaining open to opportunities across industries and company sizes. He views board and advisory service as a natural continuation of a career spent solving problems, developing businesses, improving performance, and leading organizations through change. Rather than stepping away from business, Elliott wants to remain actively engaged and put the knowledge accumulated over decades of leadership to productive use. He believes that experienced directors can provide tremendous value by asking informed questions, recognizing risks and opportunities early, supporting management without replacing it, and helping organizations maintain perspective when making consequential decisions.
Outside of his professional responsibilities, Elliott enjoys hunting, the outdoors, and traveling to pursue those interests. These pursuits complement the practical, independent, and experience-driven qualities that have characterized his professional life. His personal philosophy—“Anything worth doing is worth doing wrong”—captures the standard he has sought to bring to leadership throughout his career. Whether managing an international transportation operation, restructuring a distressed enterprise, developing a management team, negotiating an important agreement, or advising organizational leadership, Elliott approaches responsibility with the expectation that meaningful work deserves commitment, preparation, and disciplined execution.
As Elliott considers his next chapter of board and advisory involvement, he offers organizations something difficult to replicate through credentials alone: perspective developed through decades of direct responsibility. He has experienced growth and restructuring, domestic and international operations, corporate leadership and entrepreneurship, strategic decision-making and frontline execution. That breadth allows him to understand both what an organization hopes to accomplish and what must happen operationally for those ambitions to become reality. For companies seeking an experienced board member or advisor who can contribute perspective on operations, transportation, logistics, organizational change, strategic planning, business development, risk, and leadership, Elliott brings a career built around accountability, adaptability, and measurable performance.
