David Jaffe: Leadership Through Experience, Purpose, and Impact

Published on:

David Jaffe is an accomplished public company executive, board leader, strategic advisor, and social impact advocate with more than four decades of experience spanning retail, consumer businesses, private equity, investment management, philanthropy, and nonprofit leadership. Best known for his nearly three decades with Ascena Retail Group, Inc., where he ultimately served as Chair and Chief Executive Officer, David also brings early stage investment experience with companies including Petco and Office Depot. Throughout his career, he has focused on building organizations, developing senior leaders, navigating periods of growth and transformation, and creating opportunities for businesses and people to realize their full potential. Having transitioned from full time corporate leadership, David now applies his experience through board service, executive coaching, philanthropy, and mission driven organizations, bringing seasoned perspective and thoughtful leadership to opportunities where he can create meaningful and lasting impact.

David joined dressbarn in 1992 and spent his first decade with the organization developing a comprehensive understanding of the retail business before becoming President and CEO in 2002. His progression through the company gave him firsthand exposure to the operational, strategic, cultural, and customer-facing dimensions of a complex consumer enterprise. As a leader, he helped drive dressbarn’s evolution from an off-price discount retailer into a lifestyle specialty-store brand, establishing a foundation for a much broader period of expansion. That experience shaped David’s leadership philosophy: sustainable growth requires more than a compelling strategy—it requires capable people, organizational alignment, disciplined execution, and leadership that understands when a business must evolve.

Under David’s leadership, the organization expanded significantly through a series of major acquisitions and ultimately became Ascena Retail Group, a Fortune 500 specialty retailer. He led acquisitions that included maurices in 2005, Justice in 2009, Lane Bryant and Catherines in 2012, and ANN INC. in 2015. At scale, Ascena generated approximately $7 billion in annual sales, operated more than 4,500 stores across the United States and Canada, and employed approximately 65,000 associates across eight distinct brands, including Ann Taylor, LOFT, Lou & Grey, Lane Bryant, dressbarn, Justice, maurices, and Catherines. Leading an enterprise of this breadth required David to balance the identities and needs of individual brands with the strategic, financial, governance, and organizational priorities of the larger public company.

His years as Chair and CEO provided David with extensive experience in corporate governance, board leadership, strategic planning, executive development, organizational transformation, mergers and acquisitions, and managing through changing industry conditions. Retail’s rapid evolution demanded an ability to evaluate changing consumer expectations, competitive pressures, organizational capabilities, and long-term strategic choices. David developed a leadership approach grounded in asking difficult questions, understanding the people behind the numbers, and helping senior executives think beyond immediate operating challenges. His experience makes him particularly valuable to CEOs and leadership teams confronting growth decisions, organizational transitions, governance challenges, or moments when an experienced outside perspective can bring greater clarity.

Before beginning his retail career, David developed a strong foundation in finance and investing. He served as a General Partner with Chemical Venture Partners, a private equity firm, and earlier worked as a portfolio manager at Merrill Lynch. These experiences gave him an investor’s perspective on capital, business models, management teams, risk, and value creation before he moved into operating leadership. Combined with his subsequent decades of experience building and leading a large public enterprise, this background enables David to evaluate organizations from multiple perspectives—as an investor, operator, CEO, Chair, director, advisor, and stakeholder.

Following his retirement from Ascena in 2019, David entered a new chapter centered increasingly on service, education, mentorship, and social impact. He became a Senior Fellow at Harvard’s Advanced Leadership Initiative, an experience focused on helping accomplished leaders apply their expertise to significant societal challenges. Rather than viewing retirement as a conclusion to his professional contribution, David has approached it as an opportunity to redirect decades of leadership experience toward organizations and individuals that can benefit from it. He is particularly motivated by opportunities to engage meaningfully with CEOs, coach senior executives, strengthen governance, and help emerging or established organizations think more strategically about their future.

Climate education has become an important part of that work. David co-founded SubjectToClimate, an organization that provides K–12 educators with resources designed to help integrate climate change into subjects they already teach, and he serves as its Chair. His involvement reflects a broader belief that complex societal challenges can be addressed through practical solutions, strong institutions, and accessible education. David’s interest in mission-driven leadership extends beyond climate issues and demonstrates his ability to apply business discipline, governance experience, and strategic thinking in environments where success is measured not simply through financial performance but through sustainable social impact.

David also brings substantial experience to health, education, conservation, culture, and philanthropic organizations. He serves in leadership and advisory capacities with organizations including FARE, The Nature Conservancy, Ashoka, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. His connection to food-allergy advocacy is especially meaningful, having founded a predecessor charitable organization and continued to support research, education, and advocacy in the field. He has also previously contributed his perspective to organizations such as the National Retail Federation and the Baker Retailing Center at the Wharton School, extending his influence beyond the companies he directly led.

Throughout his career, David has developed significant international exposure, including business activities and offices across Asia, with experience involving China, Korea, and India. He remains open to both domestic and international board opportunities and to travel when the circumstances and potential contribution justify it. His strongest industry interests include retail, consumer products and services, and philanthropy, while his broader experience allows him to contribute across sectors where strategy, governance, executive leadership, organizational scale, and stakeholder management are central to success. He is comfortable working with organizations of different sizes because, for David, the quality of the opportunity and the ability to engage constructively with the CEO and leadership team matter more than scale alone.

Education has played an important role in David’s development as both a business leader and a lifelong learner. He earned an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business after completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a BSE/BA associated with the Wharton School. His later participation as a Senior Fellow at Harvard’s Advanced Leadership Initiative reinforced a career-long willingness to continue learning, reassessing assumptions, and applying accumulated experience to new contexts. He has been quoted in numerous articles and books and is comfortable speaking publicly when his experience and perspective can add substantive value to the conversation.

Now fully retired from day-to-day corporate executive responsibilities, David is intentionally seeking opportunities where his experience can benefit another generation of leaders. Having participated in and led both for-profit and nonprofit boards over many years, he understands that effective board service is not about occupying a seat; it is about providing judgment, perspective, accountability, support, and constructive challenge. Earlier in his career, David gained board exposure at a relatively young age, giving him an appreciation for how valuable experienced guidance can be to leaders facing unfamiliar decisions. At this stage of his career, he sees board and advisory work as an opportunity to pay that experience forward.

David’s approach to leadership is ultimately rooted in engagement. Whether advising a CEO, coaching a senior executive, evaluating strategy, supporting a nonprofit mission, or helping an organization navigate transformation, he seeks to understand the people, objectives, and circumstances before offering perspective. He brings the scale and rigor of a Fortune 500 Chair and CEO together with the curiosity of an investor, the responsibility of a fiduciary, and the purpose-driven outlook of a philanthropic leader. For organizations seeking a director or advisor capable of combining strategic judgment with decades of practical operating experience, David offers a perspective forged through growth, transformation, governance, investing, and service.

Outside of his professional and philanthropic commitments, David values an active life and time outdoors. An avid hiker who also enjoys skiing and has more recently taken up padel, he brings the same energy and curiosity to his personal interests that have characterized his professional evolution. He and his wife have four grown children and divide their time between New York City and New Canaan, Connecticut. At this stage of his life, David’s focus is increasingly centered on meaningful engagement—using what he has learned over more than 40 years to strengthen organizations, support leaders, advance worthwhile missions, and help others benefit from the experience he has accumulated.
