Ben Sandzer-Bell is an accomplished global executive whose career spans more than three and a half decades across aerospace, defense, climate innovation, international manufacturing, and large-scale environmental impact ventures. His professional journey has been defined by a consistent ability to transform complex challenges into opportunity-rich strategies, uniting technical insight, geopolitical awareness, and a deep commitment to planetary sustainability. Across 75 countries and multiple industries, he has established himself as a builder—of organizations, partnerships, value chains, and solutions that create lasting economic and environmental outcomes.
From the beginning of his career, Ben demonstrated an unusual capacity to fuse international economics with organizational execution. After completing advanced studies in International Economics and Security Studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), along with a foundational degree in International Relations and National Security Studies from UCLA, he entered the professional world with a strong analytical framework and fluency in global systems. His early work in Japan, France, and the United States immediately placed him at the intersection of technology transfer, multinational collaboration, and manufacturing, laying the groundwork for the cross-cultural leadership style that would define his career.
During his early ascent at Thomson-CSF (now Thales), Ben played an instrumental role in transferring complex technologies, building large-scale manufacturing teams, and strengthening the company’s international footprint. His work in Tokyo and Kansas City required not only technical and operational skill, but also diplomatic proficiency as he negotiated alliances, protected corporate interests, and ensured smooth integration across diverse business cultures. These years provided him with a deep understanding of multi-domestic management long before it became a widely discussed discipline, cementing his reputation as a strategic operator capable of aligning global stakeholders.
Ben’s leadership trajectory accelerated as he assumed CEO and President roles within Thales’ international network. He guided the turnaround of a $40 million manufacturing business through cross-functional empowerment, lean operational redesign, and major product diversification. He further orchestrated complex international mergers, led large virtual teams across continents, and captured highly competitive multi-year FAA contracts. His work consistently improved market penetration, modernized product lines, and strengthened the company’s global reputation. By his mid-career, Ben had already built a rare portfolio of achievements across aviation, air traffic management, and international defense.
His transition to Boeing as Managing Director of Strategy expanded his impact even further, giving him the opportunity to influence the future of the global aviation ecosystem. Ben was a key organizational driver behind what became the FAA’s “NextGen” Air Traffic Management system—a sweeping modernization initiative designed to reduce fuel burn, enable more efficient flight routing, and lower the environmental footprint of the aviation sector. This milestone program remains one of the largest “green aviation” initiatives ever implemented, demonstrating Ben’s foresight in aligning technological advancement with environmental responsibility.
As Vice President of Strategy at AAR Corp, Ben helped reposition the aviation services company through strategic diversification, targeted acquisitions, and a pioneering shift toward environmental differentiation. Under his guidance, AAR became the first aviation organization to achieve carbon-neutral status, a groundbreaking step long before sustainability became a central corporate mandate. His work highlighted his ability to balance business performance with environmental stewardship and to drive organizational change that influences entire sectors.
Following his corporate leadership tenure, Ben shifted his focus toward climate-driven ventures, applying his strategic expertise to the emerging world of carbon markets, bio-materials, and circular economy innovation. As Founder & CEO of CO2 Bambu, he catalyzed a bamboo-based housing revolution in Central America, partnering with indigenous communities to create a sustainable value chain that generated livelihoods while addressing post-disaster reconstruction needs. More than 300 eco-homes were built under his leadership, funded by organizations such as the World Bank and Spanish NGOs. This pioneering work solidified Ben’s reputation as an entrepreneur able to build environmental solutions that function at both community and national scales.
His subsequent years included research-driven sabbatical work across Southeast Asia, where he explored climate mitigation strategies, bamboo forestry, waste-to-energy models, plastics pollution, and climate adaptation initiatives supported by multilateral organizations. This period deepened his understanding of climate systems, environmental vulnerabilities, and the on-the-ground realities influencing global sustainability challenges. It also reinforced his commitment to designing solutions that are economically viable and socially inclusive.
From 2019 to 2024, Ben served as Head of Carbon for Bamboo Ecologic Corporation, where he architected climate finance mechanisms that unlocked major development programs. He captured a USAID-funded initiative to launch a bamboo value chain in the Philippines and secured a 20-year reforestation contract fully backed by the voluntary carbon market. His work demonstrated how carbon finance can be leveraged to drive long-term ecological restoration while supporting indigenous communities and accelerating climate-friendly industries.
Most recently, as Founder of Lirio, Ben has continued advancing circular solutions that convert ecological problems into economic opportunity. His work with water hyacinth—a destructive invasive species present in more than 100 countries—has centered on creating market-driven value chains that reduce ecological harm while producing bio-materials capable of replacing petroleum-based plastics. He is currently advising on the development of “Plastics Avoidance Credits,” a transformative concept designed to accelerate global adoption of sustainable materials. These initiatives reflect his ongoing commitment to marrying environmental urgency with business pragmatism. Ben draws on extensive aerospace experience, having served on the boards of Wilcox Electric (now Thales ATM) and AAR Mobility Systems while simultaneously holding senior leadership roles in the industry. During this period, he operated as Vice President of Business Development for Thales ATM in Kansas City and later as Vice President of Strategy for AAR Corp’s group of companies in Chicago, giving him a uniquely broad perspective across both operational and strategic functions.
Throughout his career, Ben has remained a sought-after speaker, thought leader, and contributor to global climate and strategy discussions. His TED-style presentations, publications, and advisory roles underscore his dedication to education, collaboration, and leadership in climate innovation. Rooted in values of global citizenship, responsible development, and long-term stewardship, he continues to help organizations understand how to thrive in a world shaped by environmental challenges and geopolitical complexity. Ben also speaks French, English and Spanish Fluently and intermediate level Japanese.
