Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Thomas M. Stigers is a globally respected manufacturing and operations executive whose career reflects more than four decades of transformational leadership, operational excellence, and strategic business execution. Recognized for his ability to navigate complex business environments and lead organizations through periods of significant change, Tom has established himself as a forward-thinking executive with a rare blend of business acumen, operational discipline, and people-centered leadership. Throughout his career, he has consistently demonstrated the ability to improve financial performance, strengthen organizational culture, and build high-performing teams capable of executing large-scale operational transformations in highly competitive industries.
Tom’s professional journey began with a strong technical foundation rooted in engineering and manufacturing operations. Armed with dual technical degrees in Chemical Engineering and Pulp and Paper Science and Engineering, he entered the industrial sector with a deep understanding of manufacturing systems and process optimization. Early roles with organizations such as Grumman Aerospace, Champion International, and Simpson Paper Company provided him with critical exposure to engineering leadership, plant operations, and production management. These formative experiences laid the groundwork for a career defined by operational rigor, strategic problem-solving, and a relentless focus on continuous improvement.
As Tom advanced into leadership roles with Abitibi Consolidated, Donohue Industries, and Champion International, he quickly distinguished himself as an executive capable of leading under pressure and driving measurable operational results. During his tenure as General Manager and senior production leader in both the United States and the United Kingdom, he led complex manufacturing environments through major restructurings and capital transformation initiatives. One of his earliest large-scale achievements involved overseeing a $150 million capital transformation project that dramatically improved cost structure efficiency while repositioning the organization for long-term competitiveness. His ability to manage both operational complexity and workforce transformation became a defining hallmark of his leadership style.
Tom’s most significant executive accomplishments came during his long and impactful tenure with Southern Container Corporation, RockTenn, WestRock, and ultimately Smurfit Westrock. Over a career spanning more than two decades within the organization, he ascended through increasingly senior leadership positions while helping shape one of the largest global packaging and manufacturing enterprises in the world. His progression from mill leadership into enterprise-level executive responsibility reflects not only his technical expertise but also his capacity to lead large organizations with strategic clarity and operational excellence.
As Executive Vice President of Paper Solutions, Tom was tasked with one of the company’s most difficult assignments: integrating and transforming the underperforming Smurfit Stone Container Corporation mill assets following acquisition. Initial integration efforts had failed to produce the expected operational improvements, prompting senior leadership to handpick Tom to lead the turnaround effort. Through organizational redesign, disciplined operating strategies, leadership restructuring, and cultural transformation, he successfully revitalized the business unit and delivered substantial operational and financial improvements. His work not only stabilized the assets but also restored confidence across the organization and established a sustainable framework for future growth.
Tom later assumed full P&L responsibility for WestRock’s $7 billion Corrugated Mill Division, overseeing 17 mills and approximately 7,500 employees across domestic and international operations. In this role, he directed manufacturing, global sales, quality systems, capital engineering, field technical services, and supply chain coordination. His leadership extended well beyond operational management, encompassing strategic planning, commercial execution, pricing discipline, and enterprise-wide performance initiatives. Under his guidance, the organization strengthened operational reliability, improved profitability, and enhanced its ability to compete within an increasingly globalized and evolving marketplace.
In his role as President of Mill Operations, Tom led one of the largest and most complex manufacturing systems in the packaging industry. He was responsible for overseeing operations, manufacturing services, and capital engineering across 31 mills operating in five countries with more than 11,500 employees and annual production exceeding 14 million tons. Managing an operating cost structure exceeding $10 billion annually required exceptional financial oversight, strategic alignment, and operational coordination. Tom’s leadership during this period demonstrated his extraordinary ability to align people, systems, and capital investments toward common business objectives while maintaining operational discipline across geographically dispersed operations.
Beyond operational leadership, Tom played a critical role in corporate governance and enterprise strategy as a Section 16 Officer and one of only eleven executives serving on WestRock’s CEO Leadership Steering Team. From 2013 through 2024, he participated in quarterly Board of Directors meetings and contributed directly to corporate strategy development, acquisition integration, risk oversight, and long-term operational planning. This exposure provided him with a sophisticated understanding of board governance, executive accountability, and strategic decision-making at the Fortune 200 level. His executive perspective combines operational depth with enterprise-level strategic insight, making him exceptionally well suited for board leadership and advisory responsibilities.
Tom’s international leadership experience further distinguishes him as a globally minded executive capable of navigating diverse operational, regulatory, and cultural environments. Throughout his career, he has led operations and business initiatives across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, India, and the United Kingdom. His ability to manage large-scale global manufacturing systems while balancing local market dynamics and enterprise priorities reflects a leadership approach grounded in adaptability, collaboration, and strategic vision. He understands how global organizations operate and how leadership alignment drives performance across borders and cultures.
Equally important to Tom’s professional success is his reputation as a people-focused leader who believes organizational transformation begins with culture and talent development. Colleagues and peers consistently recognize him for his calm leadership style, operational credibility, and ability to unite teams around shared objectives. Whether leading union or non-union environments, Tom has demonstrated the ability to foster accountability, build trust, and mentor future leaders. His passion for leadership development and organizational improvement has remained constant throughout his career and continues to shape his approach to advisory and board service opportunities today.
Tom’s contributions extend well beyond corporate leadership into industry advocacy, governance, and community involvement. He has served on multiple industry and nonprofit boards, including FM Global’s Atlanta/Dallas Advisory Board, the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI), the NCASI Foundation, the World Containerboard Organization, and the International Corrugated Case Association. He also served as President of the Recycled Paperboard Technical Association. Through these roles, Tom has contributed to industry advancement, environmental stewardship initiatives, operational best practices, and strategic collaboration across the manufacturing and packaging sectors.
Now retired from full-time executive leadership following the merger that formed Smurfit Westrock, Tom remains energized by the opportunity to contribute his experience and insight to organizations seeking strong governance, operational expertise, and strategic leadership. He is especially interested in serving organizations whose missions align with helping others, improving communities, and creating sustainable long-term value. His desire to continue making meaningful contributions reflects a lifelong commitment to leadership, mentorship, and service.
Outside of the boardroom and manufacturing environment, Tom embraces challenges that mirror the discipline and perseverance that defined his professional career. An avid participant in Ironman 70.3 triathlons and a passionate poker player, he values preparation, resilience, and strategic thinking in every aspect of life. These personal pursuits reinforce the same principles that have shaped his leadership journey: discipline, endurance, adaptability, and calculated decision-making.
