Théa Watkins: Leading with Courage, Building Trust, and Transforming Organizations Through Inclusive Excellence

“Feel the fear and do it anyway.”

Théa Watkins is an accomplished financial services executive, board director, strategic advisor, consultant, educator, and executive coach whose career has been defined by the belief that strong organizations are built through sound governance, trusted relationships, inclusive leadership, and the courage to navigate change. With nearly three decades of international professional experience spanning the United Kingdom and United States, Théa brings a distinctive combination of commercial banking expertise, risk management, business transformation, organizational culture, employee engagement, and leadership development. Her career has placed her at the intersection of business performance and people leadership, giving her a broad perspective on how organizations can achieve sustainable results while creating environments in which individuals and teams are empowered to perform at their best.

Théa built the foundation of her executive career at Lloyds Banking Group, where she spent more than two decades working across financial services and banking. After moving from the United Kingdom to the United States in 2000, she established herself in the New York Branch as a Structured Finance Banker before progressing to Vice President and Senior Vice President roles. As a Senior Relationship Manager, she developed extensive expertise in commercial banking, institutional relationship management, credit, portfolio management, negotiation, and risk. She and her team ultimately built and managed relationships encompassing approximately 30 institutional clients and more than $20 billion in assets and facilities, helping develop what became the Branch’s highest revenue-generating business over a multi-year period. Her work required not only financial acumen but also the ability to create the policies, processes, controls, and stakeholder relationships necessary to support responsible and sustainable growth.

Her career subsequently expanded from revenue generation and client management into enterprise leadership, governance, transformation, and organizational effectiveness. As Head of Branch Management for Lloyds Banking Group’s New York operations, Théa served as a member of the North America Executive Committee and helped provide governance oversight across a business encompassing approximately 270 employees and more than $250 million in revenue. She led central support functions and the Branch Change and Business Transformation team while overseeing or influencing areas that included internal communications, employee engagement, learning and development, culture, crisis management, and strategic change. This breadth of responsibility strengthened her ability to view organizations holistically—connecting commercial objectives, operational realities, regulatory responsibilities, workforce considerations, and reputational risk.

One of Théa’s defining leadership strengths is her ability to help organizations and teams perform effectively through periods of uncertainty and change. As Co-Chair of the U.S. Crisis Committee and a member of a four-person Executive Crisis Response Team, she played a central leadership role during the global pandemic. Through rapid decision-making, stakeholder communication, risk assessment, and protocol development, she helped direct the safe transition of Branch employees to remote working while maintaining client service. Approximately 98 percent of employees transitioned safely to remote work without disruption to client service levels, while employee confidence and trust scores increased. The organization also achieved exceptionally strong employee sentiment around communication and safety, demonstrating Théa’s conviction that disciplined risk management and thoughtful people leadership can—and should—operate together.

Théa has also established a strong record in culture, employee engagement, talent development, and inclusive leadership. She helped transform Branch employee engagement scores from the low 50s into the high 70s by combining structured listening, data analysis, transparency, accountability, and strategic action planning. As a leader in diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging initiatives, she worked collaboratively with senior executives, HR leaders, employees, and other stakeholders to advance cultural change. Her philosophy extends beyond programs or policies: she describes the goal as creating “inclusive excellence,” an organizational environment in which diverse perspectives are valued, people know their voices matter, trust supports collaboration, and individuals are enabled to contribute their full potential.

Following her executive banking career, Théa brought this combination of commercial discipline and people-centered leadership into entrepreneurship. Through Théa Watkins Consulting, she works with corporations, financial institutions, educational organizations, nonprofits, executives, and teams to cultivate lasting cultural and organizational change. Her engagements encompass executive and group coaching, leadership development, facilitation, culture and DEIAB work, team effectiveness, organizational assessment, and strategic consulting. Her assignments have included work with prominent organizations such as HSBC Bank and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, demonstrating the transferability of her leadership approach across sectors. Whether working with an executive, facilitating a team, or advising an organization, Théa emphasizes trust, respect, curiosity, accountability, and measurable improvement.

Education and mentorship are equally important dimensions of Théa’s professional contribution. As an Adjunct Professor at LIM College in New York, she teaches Leadership and Inclusive Leadership, bringing decades of practical executive experience into the classroom. She also supports the development and advancement of women through coaching and professional networks, including her involvement with the Financial Women’s Association, where she has served on its Leadership Council and as Co-Chair of the Member2Member Mentoring Program and Pacesetters Program. Her commitment to developing others is grounded in experience: throughout her career, she has coached individuals, developed talent, led teams, influenced senior stakeholders, and helped people navigate challenging professional environments with greater confidence and effectiveness.

Board service provides another important expression of Théa’s leadership. She currently serves on the Board of Arts for Learning Connecticut, contributing strategic guidance, governance oversight, risk awareness, and organizational support to a nonprofit dedicated to expanding young people’s learning through the arts. Previously, she served for six years as a Board Trustee of Alex, The Leukodystrophy Charity in the United Kingdom, including a period as Interim Chair. In that role, she helped guide the organization through issues involving pandemic-era crisis management, business-model adaptation, communications, governance, risk, and people management. These experiences complement her executive committee background and give her practical insight into the responsibilities of directors as stewards of organizational purpose, reputation, risk, strategy, and stakeholder interests.

Théa’s board value proposition is particularly compelling because it bridges commercial expertise and organizational culture. She understands financial services from the perspectives of revenue generation, client relationships, credit, portfolio management, operational risk, governance, and transformation, while also bringing substantial experience in employee engagement, talent, leadership, and culture. She is therefore able to examine strategic questions through multiple lenses: whether an organization has the financial and operational discipline to execute its plans, whether its leadership and culture support those plans, how effectively risks are understood and governed, and whether stakeholders have sufficient trust in the institution. Her experience across the U.K. and U.S. further enables her to contribute an international perspective to organizations operating across markets, cultures, and stakeholder environments.

Her professional credentials reinforce this multidisciplinary approach. Théa earned a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Business Studies from the University of the West of England and has continued to invest in her development throughout her career. She holds an Advanced Certificate in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion from Cornell University’s ILR School as well as coaching certification focused on Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, Justice and Belonging. These qualifications complement rather than define her expertise: her perspective on leadership has been developed through decades of responsibility for businesses, clients, employees, executive decisions, crises, organizational transformations, and board-level challenges.

At the center of Théa’s leadership philosophy is a deeply held belief that people are an organization’s greatest asset and that trust is essential to sustainable performance. She seeks to create environments in which people feel respected, heard, challenged, and empowered to contribute, while maintaining the accountability and strategic discipline required to achieve meaningful results. She brings authenticity and integrity to her relationships and is particularly effective at creating connection where teams or stakeholders may begin from different perspectives. Her personal motto, “Feel the fear and do it anyway,” captures the courage and pragmatism with which she approaches leadership: uncertainty does not eliminate the responsibility to act, and meaningful progress frequently requires leaders to move forward thoughtfully despite discomfort.

Beyond her professional commitments, Théa maintains interests in gardening, the outdoors, travel, and the arts—interests that reflect her curiosity and appreciation for growth, creativity, and different perspectives. Her commitment to community is also visible through her nonprofit board service, mentorship, and volunteer involvement with organizations supporting education and economic opportunity. Across banking, consulting, academia, nonprofit governance, and professional development, the common thread in her career is an ability to connect people, strategy, and execution in ways that strengthen both organizational performance and human potential.

Today, Théa offers boards and leadership teams the perspective of an executive who has generated revenue, managed significant institutional relationships, navigated complex risks, led transformation, shaped culture, developed talent, advised senior stakeholders, and governed mission-driven organizations. She combines the financial and strategic judgment of a seasoned banking executive with the empathy and curiosity of a coach, the communication capabilities of an educator and speaker, and the oversight mindset of an experienced board director. For organizations seeking leaders who can ask thoughtful questions, understand complex stakeholder dynamics, strengthen governance, and help translate strategic ambition into sustainable performance, Théa brings a highly relevant combination of experience, perspective, and purpose.
