OVERVIEW
Stephen Vann is an entrepreneur, investor, executive, and advisor whose career spans technology, finance, real estate, artificial intelligence, sustainability, and the performing arts.
Over more than two decades, he has served as a founder, CEO, executive director, board member, investor, and advisor, working with organizations ranging from early-stage ventures to established companies and nonprofit institutions in the United States and Europe. His career has followed an unconventional path, combining entrepreneurial ventures, institutional leadership, international investing, and a lifelong involvement in music and the arts.
Today, he focuses primarily on board and advisory roles, helping founders, CEOs, and management teams navigate growth, fundraising, governance, strategic partnerships, and organizational change. He brings the perspective of someone who has built companies, managed complex organizations, raised capital, served investors, and sat on both sides of the boardroom table.
Board and Advisory Experience
Stephen is “industry agnostic” and has worked across sectors including artificial intelligence, fintech, real estate, consumer products, sustainability, and business services. He has served organizations ranging from small private companies to institutions with more than sixty board members, and his experience spans both for-profit and nonprofit environments.
He works closely with founders and leadership teams on capital formation, go-to-market strategy, governance, business development, organizational structure, and long-range planning. His approach is practical and collaborative, combining strategic thinking with an appreciation for the realities of execution.
Career Highlights
Throughout his career, Stephen has repeatedly found himself at points where organizations were growing, evolving, or facing significant change. As a founder, CEO, executive director, investor, and advisor, he has participated in fundraising efforts, business launches, operational turnarounds, strategic partnerships, and organizational development initiatives across multiple industries.
He enjoys working directly with founders and management teams and believes that experience, judgment, relationships, and clear thinking often matter more than theory.
International Experience
International business has been a central theme throughout Stephen’s career. As Chief Executive Officer of SVB International Inc., he has spent more than twenty years advising and investing in businesses across multiple markets, with particularly deep roots in Switzerland and France.
He has operated businesses in Geneva, Switzerland for more than two decades and has worked extensively with founders, investors, family offices, financial institutions, and multinational corporations. He brings significant experience in cross-border negotiations, international partnerships, capital raising, and board-level decision making.
He serves as a member of the Forum 500, an international think tank and business advisory network of 500 members in 20 countries worldwide.
His ability to move comfortably between cultures, industries, and stakeholder groups has made him a valued resource for organizations operating in international environments.
Investor and Technology
Stephen has long been drawn to emerging technologies and businesses that have the potential to reshape industries. He was an early pre-market investor in Meta, Block and Wealthfront, and has remained active in identifying and supporting innovative companies.
His more recent investments have focused heavily on artificial intelligence, including pre-IPO positions in frontier AI companies OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Groq, Etched, and other emerging technology companies. Active participation in these markets gives him current insight into technology trends, capital markets, innovation cycles, and the opportunities and challenges facing growing companies.
Real Estate
Alongside his work in technology and finance, Stephen has built and managed an international real estate portfolio. Since 2003, he has participated in the development, acquisition, financing, management and sale of nearly $200 million in residential and commercial real estate projects in Switzerland and the United States.
His experience includes financial structuring, acquisitions, tax planning, operations, estate planning strategies, and complex cross-border commercial negotiations.
Current projects include the development and management of a portfolio of historic 1890’s Renaissance Revival brownstones on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, the area where Stephen lives and works.
Music CEO and Non-Profit Leadership
Before shifting his primary focus toward investing, entrepreneurship, and advisory work, Stephen spent two decades in senior leadership positions managing classical Symphony Orchestras.
He served as General Manager of the New York Philharmonic and held chief executive positions with several major American orchestras. In those roles, he oversaw operating budgets exceeding $50 million and was responsible for fundraising, labor negotiations, marketing, strategic planning, corporate partnerships, and organizational management.
He also produced recordings, broadcasts, tours, and special projects, including a Grammy-nominated recording and a PBS television special. The experience continues to influence how he approaches leadership, collaboration, communication, and complex organizational culture.
Stephen remains active in the arts as a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences annual Grammy Awards, as a member of Interlochen’s Heritage Society, and as Treasurer of the 112 year old Musicians Foundation in New York.
Speaking and Community Involvement
Stephen has been an invited speaker at institutions and forums including Harvard University, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Manhattan School of Music, the League of American Orchestras, and Crain’s Arts and Business Forum, among others.
He believes that change and progress come from true engagement at every level, and currently serves as President of his local community Block Association, where he is active in a variety of civic, cultural, and philanthropic organizations.
Personal Interests
Outside of business, Stephen maintains a deep interest in music, travel, food, wine, and the outdoors. He participates in several international food and wine organizations and continues to perform as a tenor with New York choral organizations, including annual appearances at Carnegie Hall.
These interests have reinforced many of the values that shape his professional life: curiosity, discipline, preparation, collaboration, and a genuine enjoyment of bringing people together.
