Sandra “Sandy” Deer is a respected and visionary leader in human resources, renowned for her strategic foresight, operational agility, and deep-rooted passion for building thriving workplace cultures. With over four decades of experience across diverse industries—from manufacturing to international lumber operations—Sandy has cultivated a legacy of transformation, innovation, and mentorship in the HR domain.
Currently serving as Founder and Principal at Deer Insights LLC, Sandy offers high-level advisory and consulting services across the full spectrum of human resources functions. Her work is focused on equipping organizations to grow sustainably by integrating workforce strategy, leadership development, talent acquisition, and organizational design with business objectives. As a certified SHRM-SCP and John Maxwell Certified Speaker, Trainer, and Coach, she brings strategic, technical and inspirational expertise to the companies she supports.
Prior to launching Deer Insights, Sandy held a pivotal decade-long role as Director of Human Resources for Southern Operations at Interfor, one of the world’s largest lumber producers. There, she was a core member of the senior operations leadership team, leading HR strategy for a workforce of 2,400 employees across the southern United States. She steered transformative initiatives in culture, acquisition integration, total rewards, leadership development, workforce planning and skilled trades development. Her leadership was instrumental during the company’s growth via seven acquisitions, where she successfully harmonized operations across 13 manufacturing facilities. Notably, Sandy led the rapid staffing and restart of a previously shuttered sawmill and navigated complex union negotiations—including a decertification campaign with the United Steel Workers—positioning Interfor for accelerated productivity and alignment.
A creative problem-solver and results-driven change agent, Sandy also introduced groundbreaking programs at Interfor, including a Department of Labor-certified apprenticeship program, innovative skill-based compensation systems, and a revamped benefits strategy that achieved multi-year cost savings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she managed the company’s health protocols and regulatory compliance while ensuring workforce continuity and morale.
Sandy’s foundational years were spent at Norbord, where over a 26-year tenure she rose to HR Manager for U.S. Operations, directing HR strategy across eight U.S. locations with over 1,100 employees. She was instrumental in greenfield start-ups, acquisitions, and major compensation and benefits overhauls. She also played a global leadership role in Norbord’s safety culture transformation and drove major HR systems integrations that unified disparate payroll and labor systems.
Earlier in her career at CMI (Cast Metal Industries), Sandy gained formative experience across both union and non-union settings, including employee relations, safety and health programs, and HR leadership for complex, multi-site operations. Her early work laid the foundation for her principal based, practical, people-first approach to leadership.
Sandy earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Michigan, with a special emphasis on industrial psychology—a discipline that continues to shape her strategic insights. Her career has consistently centered on fostering environments where individuals are empowered to grow, contribute meaningfully, and operate in alignment with organizational values.
Throughout her journey, Sandy has not only held senior leadership roles but has also been a vital strategic partner and trusted adviser to executive teams and boards. Her expertise in labor relations, compliance, and risk management has also been invaluable during periods of significant organizational change.
Sandra Deer is more than an HR executive—she is a builder of cultures, a steward of talent, and a catalyst for organizational excellence.
