“Don’t Fence Me In.”
Patrick Davis is an accomplished public affairs executive, strategic communications professional, business owner, political consultant, and nonprofit board leader whose career spans more than 38 years and 19 election cycles. From the White House and federal government to national organizations, entrepreneurial leadership, and nonprofit governance, Patrick has built his career around navigating complex environments where communication, relationships, sound judgment, and decisive leadership matter. His professional experience encompasses public affairs, strategic communications, public relations, government relations, organizational management, media strategy, coalition building, fundraising, and executive-level advisory work. His personal motto, “Don’t Fence Me In,” reflects a career characterized by intellectual curiosity, adaptability, independence, and a willingness to embrace difficult challenges.
Patrick began developing his communications and public-service foundation at Minnesota State University Moorhead, where he studied mass communications and public relations along with political science. Shortly after college, he entered the national arena as Assistant to the Deputy Director of Political Affairs at the White House. In that capacity, he supported the coordination of presidential participation in issue briefings and events while contributing to the preparation, editing, and distribution of domestic and foreign policy issue reports. The experience placed Patrick at the intersection of communications, policy, stakeholder engagement, and executive operations early in his career and helped establish the instincts for messaging and relationship management that would remain central to his professional life.
His responsibilities continued to expand as he moved through positions requiring increasingly sophisticated organizational and leadership capabilities. Following his White House experience, Patrick served as Political Field Desk Coordinator for the 1992 Bush-Quayle presidential campaign, coordinating communications and administrative activities with multiple state field operations while supervising staff and monitoring a significant operating budget. He subsequently entered the tourism and economic-development environment as a Visitor and Events Representative with the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau, where his work included tourism promotion, community events, direct sales, trade-show representation, and coordination with public and private stakeholders. This period broadened his experience beyond political organizations and reinforced his ability to communicate an organization’s value to varied audiences.
Patrick later served as Executive Director of the South Dakota Republican Party, assuming responsibility for the organization’s day-to-day operations. His duties encompassed personnel management, financial oversight, fundraising, media communications, public speaking, conventions, organizational development, stakeholder relations, and management of substantial voter programs. He then advanced to the National Republican Senatorial Committee, first working as a Regional Political Director and subsequently as Political Director. His responsibilities included candidate recruitment, campaign planning, national field operations, research, donor relations, media planning, and advising campaigns operating in numerous states. These positions required Patrick to synthesize large amounts of information, coordinate diverse stakeholders, allocate resources, and communicate effectively in environments where decisions frequently had to be made under significant time pressure.
In 2005, Patrick translated this accumulated experience into entrepreneurship by founding Patrick Davis Consulting, LLC in Colorado Springs. For more than two decades, he has led the firm while advising clients in public affairs, political consulting, strategic communications, public relations, fundraising, message development, crisis and rapid-response communications, grassroots coalition building, speechwriting, and media relations. The transition from senior organizational leadership to business ownership added another dimension to his executive experience: responsibility not simply for strategy, but also for running and sustaining an enterprise. As a longtime small-business owner, Patrick understands client relationships, financial accountability, reputation management, business development, personnel considerations, and the discipline required to convert strategy into measurable execution.
Patrick’s career also brought him back into federal service through senior roles at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. His work included responsibilities as a presidential appointee, Deputy Assistant Administrator, and senior advisor, giving him direct exposure to the intersection of government, regulation, public engagement, communications, and organizational leadership. Working within a major federal agency added regulatory and institutional perspective to a career already grounded in private consulting, associations, campaigns, and communications. That breadth allows Patrick to understand how organizations are affected by public policy and stakeholder expectations while recognizing the importance of communicating effectively across constituencies with different priorities.
Board governance has become an increasingly significant component of Patrick’s leadership journey. He has served with The Resource Exchange in Colorado Springs and today serves as Chair of its Board of Directors. His involvement has included navigating organizational growth and regulatory uncertainty, contributing to development and executive matters, and participating in the responsibilities associated with organizational leadership and governance. He has also described taking responsibility in the CEO succession planning process, an experience that deepened his appreciation for one of a board’s most consequential responsibilities: helping ensure that an organization has capable executive leadership. His board experience has given him a new arena in which to apply decades of strategic judgment while reinforcing his desire to contribute to additional organizations facing meaningful challenges.
Patrick’s professional capabilities extend well beyond any single sector. His experience encompasses political consulting, public affairs, strategic communications, public relations, media relations, crisis communications, government relations, message development, fundraising, policy analysis, coalition building, community outreach, public speaking, organizational leadership, and business management. His professional profile further reflects substantial recognition for skills in political consulting, public relations, strategic communications, public affairs, leadership, and related disciplines. He is particularly interested in opportunities involving consumer and voter communication technology, public relations, brand marketing, digital advertising, public affairs, environmental regulatory compliance and adjacent industries, and he remains open to organizations at different stages and sizes.
Communication has been one of the most consistent threads throughout Patrick’s career. Whether preparing policy materials, engaging with journalists, speaking publicly, advising organizational leaders, developing messages, managing communications programs, or working with fellow board members, he has spent decades translating complex issues into understandable and actionable information. His experience encompasses both written and verbal communications as well as the strategic judgment required to understand audiences, anticipate reactions, and determine how and when a message should be delivered. He remains comfortable with public speaking and sees communication not simply as a promotional function, but as an essential leadership responsibility.
Patrick’s approach to leadership is equally informed by his experience managing people, budgets, organizations, clients, campaigns, and volunteer stakeholders. He has worked in environments ranging from small entrepreneurial organizations to national institutions and the federal government, giving him exposure to very different operating structures and leadership demands. Across those settings, recurring themes have included accountability, preparation, relationship building, adaptability, and an ability to remain focused on objectives amid changing circumstances. His current interest in additional board and advisory service reflects a desire to apply those lessons where experienced outside perspective can contribute to governance, organizational development, communications, and strategic decision-making.
Beyond his professional life, Patrick maintains interests that reflect both curiosity and an appreciation for experiences away from the demands of executive work. Gardening, cooking, golf, photography, stained glass creation, reading history & biographies, traveling, fly fishing, and camping are among the activities he enjoys. These interests complement a professional personality that has consistently valued exploration and new challenges. He is open to quarterly travel in connection with board responsibilities and brings to future opportunities the perspective of someone who has spent nearly four decades working across organizations, industries, communities, and leadership environments.
At this stage of his career, Patrick views board service as a meaningful extension of the work he has spent decades doing. His experience on a nonprofit board, including leadership responsibilities and involvement in executive succession matters, has shown him how experienced directors can contribute when an organization faces growth, transition, regulatory complexity, or other strategic challenges. Rather than seeking board service simply as another credential, Patrick is drawn to the opportunity to engage with substantive problems, ask informed questions, support executive leadership, and help organizations navigate change. His career has repeatedly placed him in situations where communications, people, resources, and strategy must come together, and board service provides another avenue through which that experience can be applied.
