Michael Huddleston is a strategic operator, business optimization executive, and people-centered leader with more than 20 years of professional experience spanning field operations, corporate strategy, innovation, financial analysis, continuous improvement, and organizational leadership. Throughout his career, he has developed a reputation for understanding complex systems, identifying the leverage points that can meaningfully improve them, and building the teams and operating disciplines necessary to translate ideas into measurable results. His leadership approach combines analytical rigor with a deep commitment to people, reflecting his belief that sustainable organizational performance is created when clear strategy, capable leaders, and disciplined execution work together.
Michael has spent more than 17 years with WM, progressing through a series of increasingly responsible leadership positions that have given him an unusually broad perspective on how large, operationally complex organizations function. His career with the company began close to frontline operations, where he gained firsthand knowledge of the decisions, systems, processes, and relationships required to serve customers efficiently while managing cost, safety, productivity, and service expectations. Over time, his responsibilities expanded from operational execution into performance improvement, analytics, strategic planning, innovation, and enterprise-level business optimization. That progression has enabled him to understand both the realities faced by people executing strategy in the field and the priorities of senior leaders responsible for setting organizational direction.
Early in his WM career, Michael served as an Operations Manager Trainee, focusing on operating and revenue efficiencies, route optimization, service improvement, data integrity, system deployment, and training. He subsequently became Area Dispatch Manager, where he was responsible for overseeing and improving a dispatch organization of 32 dispatchers supporting three lines of business, 15 operating sites, and approximately 970 drivers. The role required Michael to work across organizational boundaries and develop productive relationships with operations, sales, route management, and other functional leaders. It also reinforced a principle that has remained central to his leadership philosophy: operational performance is rarely the product of a single department or initiative; it emerges from systems, people, information, and priorities working effectively together.
Michael’s ability to analyze those interconnected systems led to his nine-year tenure as Area Operations Improvement Manager. In that capacity, he managed and coordinated initiatives involving productivity and profitability analysis, labor management, standard operating processes, best practices, routing, mapping, and continuous improvement. He collaborated with leaders across functions and lines of business to evaluate performance and turn improvement opportunities into executable objectives. The experience strengthened his expertise in connecting operational decisions to financial outcomes while demonstrating the importance of metrics, accountability, and disciplined follow-through. It also allowed him to develop the ability to move comfortably between detailed operational analysis and broader strategic questions—a capability that continues to define his executive perspective.
In 2021, Michael advanced to Director of Innovation & Business Optimization, taking responsibility for the strategic direction and oversight of teams focused on improving organizational performance through innovation and execution. He partnered with area leaders across multiple disciplines to advance operational strategy while collaborating with corporate leadership on important initiatives. His responsibilities included direct leadership of the Area Dispatch Center, WM Way Team, Operations Improvement Managers, Routing Analysts, and Operations Analysts. In 2023, Michael continued his progression by becoming Senior Director of Innovation & Business Optimization, reflecting a career that has evolved from executing within operating systems to helping shape the strategies, capabilities, and improvement mechanisms behind them.
Before joining WM, Michael served as Operations Manager for Pack Pools, Inc., where his responsibilities extended across nearly every dimension of the business. He oversaw operations, sales, accounting, payroll, construction, and service while supervising department managers and employees. He prepared financial reporting for the company president, forecasted cash requirements, developed performance metrics and operating dashboards, designed incentive programs, built purchasing and inventory control systems, and cultivated relationships with builders, service providers, and customers. That experience provided Michael with an entrepreneurial operating perspective and an appreciation for how closely financial management, customer relationships, people leadership, and operational execution are connected.
Today, Michael’s expertise encompasses strategic planning, operations management, financial and cost analysis, innovation, business optimization, continuous improvement, forecasting, performance management, project and product management, business development, data analysis, change management, and team development. His professional skills also demonstrate significant depth in areas such as profit-and-loss management, process improvement, cost reduction, budgeting, business analysis, strategic planning, project management, and operations management. His background enables him to examine an organization from multiple perspectives—understanding not only what should change, but how the change will affect people, processes, economics, customers, and execution.
That combination of field experience and corporate leadership shapes the perspective Michael brings to board and advisory opportunities. He is particularly interested in logistics and operationally complex organizations where strategic priorities must ultimately be converted into real-world performance. Rather than approaching strategy as an abstract exercise, Michael focuses on creating the organizational clarity, operating systems, performance measures, and leadership alignment necessary to make strategy executable. He is especially interested in opportunities where he can help organizations improve performance, develop leaders, navigate complexity, evaluate opportunities, and establish the discipline required to sustain results over time.
At the center of Michael’s leadership philosophy is a strong commitment to developing people. He believes leaders should challenge individuals to achieve beyond what they currently believe possible while providing the guidance, feedback, and support necessary for them to grow. His values emphasize assuming the best intentions in others, addressing issues directly rather than around people, protecting relationships, remaining curious, learning from both knowledge and failure, and continually raising personal and organizational standards. He believes attitude and effort remain within an individual’s control and that strong leaders should model both. His approach to leadership is also grounded in authenticity: he believes people are more willing to follow a leader who is genuine than one who simply attempts to appear consistently right.
Michael also maintains a strong bias toward action. His philosophy is to focus first on doing the right things rather than becoming consumed with doing everything perfectly, recognizing that progress frequently requires action, learning, adjustment, and continued improvement. He encourages teams to deliver earlier and better than promised, remain curious enough to learn from anyone, and avoid allowing perfection to become an obstacle to meaningful progress. At the same time, his action-oriented mindset is balanced by an appreciation for relationships and service. Michael believes relationships are fundamental to accomplishing meaningful work and that leaders have an obligation to improve the lives and capabilities of the people they influence.
Michael earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from Texas State University, where he also participated in Students in Free Enterprise and its presentation team. His communication experience extends beyond traditional corporate settings and includes company-based public speaking as well as preaching, experiences that have helped him develop the ability to communicate ideas to different audiences with conviction and clarity. Outside of his professional responsibilities, fitness is an important personal interest and reflects the discipline, consistency, and commitment to continuous improvement that characterize his broader approach to life and leadership.
Michael’s personal mission captures the common thread running throughout his career: “My mission is to serve people and organizations by bringing clarity to complexity, developing people to achieve beyond their perceived limits, and building the strategic focus and systems that turn vision into sustainable performance.” It is a mission reflected in his progression from frontline operations to senior corporate leadership and in his desire to contribute that experience at the board and advisory level. Whether examining operational performance, developing leaders, evaluating strategy, or helping an organization navigate change, Michael brings a practical understanding that lasting results require more than a strong vision—they require people, systems, accountability, and execution working together.
