“Begin With an End in Mind.”
For over four decades, Marty Mercer has built a distinguished career at the intersection of finance, law, and technology, helping business owners increase the value of their companies and achieve their long-term goals. As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Attorney, and Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Marty’s career has been guided by a singular philosophy—“Begin with an end in mind.” More than a motto, this principle represents his lifelong commitment to helping organizations operate more efficiently, strategically, and profitably while keeping sight of the ultimate vision for growth and sustainability.
From the very start of his professional journey, Marty demonstrated a rare ability to integrate complex financial and legal expertise with technological innovation. After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Accounting from UCLA, he completed his Juris Doctorate at the University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law in 1981. These dual qualifications launched a multifaceted career that would see him bridging the gap between traditional financial management and the rapidly evolving world of business technology.
Marty’s early career began within the ranks of Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers), one of the “Big Four” accounting firms, where he quickly rose to the role of Manager of Microcomputer Advisory Services. During this time, he spearheaded the development of technology-driven accounting systems and custom software solutions that transformed the way financial data was processed and analyzed. His innovative work earned him national recognition within the firm, including an award for developing proprietary software that dramatically improved efficiency across more than 90 Coopers & Lybrand tax offices nationwide. His capacity to merge financial acumen with software innovation set the tone for a career defined by vision and execution.
Building upon this success, Marty transitioned to BDO Seidman, another top-tier accounting firm, where he served as Director of Management Information Services. There, he expanded his influence in the management consulting space, advising clients on strategic business planning, litigation support, and information systems. His expertise in integrating emerging computer technologies with traditional business models positioned him as a trusted advisor to both executives and legal teams navigating the increasingly complex intersection of finance, data, and compliance.
In 1989, Marty took on the role of Director of Client Services at Financial Decision Systems, Inc., where he oversaw client engagement for a company that developed corporate tax software for Fortune 500 firms. His leadership in client support, education, and product improvement enhanced nationwide adoption of corporate tax automation tools, improving efficiency for some of the nation’s largest corporations. His commitment to client success reflected a core belief that technology, when properly harnessed, could elevate both the accuracy and strategic impact of financial decision-making.
Marty’s next major career milestone came in the early 1990s as Vice President of Financial Fraud Investigations at Paul Chamberlain International, a firm specializing in white-collar crime and financial institution investigations. Working alongside former FBI agents, Marty directed complex financial and computer fraud investigations, uncovering hidden assets and coordinating with law enforcement on high-profile cases. His forensic accounting expertise and meticulous attention to detail made him an invaluable resource in prosecuting financial crimes during the turbulent period following the Savings & Loan crisis. This chapter of his career solidified his reputation as a principled and exacting professional dedicated to ethical standards and financial integrity.
In 2005, Marty joined B2B CFO®, the nation’s largest firm dedicated to providing outsourced CFO services to privately held companies. As a Partner, he has spent the past two decades advising business owners on strategies to increase company value, improve financial systems, and prepare for exit events. Serving as both a strategic partner and trusted confidant, he has guided organizations through transitions, mergers, acquisitions, and growth phases. Marty’s approach emphasizes not only maximizing profitability but also aligning financial strategy with the personal and professional goals of business owners. His clients, typically generating between $5 million and $75 million in annual sales, rely on his experience to drive lasting results.
Beyond his client work, Marty has been deeply involved in teaching and mentorship, having spent more than 24 years educating college students and CPA candidates in accounting theory, auditing, business law, and computer science. His role as an educator reflects his dedication to shaping the next generation of financial professionals, fostering both technical proficiency and ethical judgment. His dual background as an attorney and CPA gives his teaching a rare depth, illuminating how business success depends on a balance between precision, integrity, and innovation.
Marty’s professional achievements are matched by a life rich in personal pursuits and family devotion. He is an avid skier, swimmer, and handball player and proudly serves with the National Ski Patrol alongside his three grown children, Sarah, Christopher, and Stephen. Together, they embody the teamwork and perseverance that define his approach to both business and life. His family-centered values and collaborative spirit are evident in every aspect of his work, from leading complex financial operations to mentoring entrepreneurs navigating the challenges of growth and transition.
Throughout his career, Marty has demonstrated a rare ability to synthesize financial analysis, legal strategy, and technological implementation into actionable solutions that create real value. His legacy is one of integrity, innovation, and impact—qualities that have defined his work as a leader, educator, and advisor.
