Known for his deep operational expertise, strategic vision, and ability to scale complex businesses, John has built a career around delivering high-impact results across sectors including heavy civil construction, natural gas, water and sewer systems, landfills, recycling, and manufacturing.

John currently serves as president of United Infrastructure Group (UIG), a premier design-build construction firm operating throughout the Southeast. Under his leadership, UIG has grown to $450 million in annual revenue, secured a project backlog exceeding $750 million, and expanded its workforce to over 900 employees. The company’s portfolio includes major infrastructure projects such as the demolition of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, the I-26 Irmo Widening Project in South Carolina, and multi-million-dollar highway improvements in North Carolina and Georgia. John also leads the strategic oversight of UIG’s affiliated companies, including United Demolition, Kinetic Demolition & Engineering, United Engineering, and Mountain Creek Contractors.

Previously, John was president and CEO of MCI Group, Inc., a diversified holding company comprising six vertically integrated infrastructure and energy-service businesses. MCI was recognized as a top vendor in the landfill and coal-services sectors nationwide.

In addition to his executive responsibilities, John has served on numerous corporate and nonprofit boards. He currently sits on the board of United Infrastructure Group and the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), where he previously held the role of president of the Contractors Division. Through ARTBA, he has advised national and state transportation leaders, presented at the White House and EPA Headquarters, and contributed to major regulatory policy discussions. His nonprofit experience includes board roles with Mon General Hospital Foundation, The Kiski School, and West Virginians for Better Transportation, where he successfully helped lead a $3 billion highway funding initiative in West Virginia.

John’s passion for leadership extends into mentorship and culture-building. At UIG, he developed and teaches a leadership development program that fosters a “leader-leader” culture of distributed decision-making and empowerment. He also implemented a company-wide budgeting system, strategic planning processes, and departmental accountability models.

John is also a published author. His memoir, “Appalachian Kid: How Hope Changed Everything”, became an Amazon best-seller and has been the subject of more than 30 podcast and media appearances. His second book, “Be Afraid of the Dark: Navigating the Pitfalls of Generational Family Businesses”, is scheduled for release by Forbes Books in 2027.

He holds a degree in civil and environmental engineering from West Virginia University and completed the Owners and Presidents Management Program at Harvard Business School. He is also a respected public speaker, having addressed trade associations, state agencies, and industry conferences on topics ranging from infrastructure policy and workforce development to mental health and leadership in construction.
