“Bridging Insight and Impact in the Complex World of Corporate Finance”

John J. Hwang is an experienced finance executive with over two decades of leadership experience in investment banking, corporate finance functions in Treasury and FP&A for a private equity-backed company, leveraged finance, , and corporate restructuring. With a powerful blend of institutional knowledge and hands-on investment expertise, he has played pivotal roles in shaping investment fund strategies and advising companies through some of their most critical inflection points during his tenure in investment management in credit fund platforms. His career spans a spectrum of industries including power & utilities, leisure, entertainment, hospitality, food & beverage, consumer, retail, airlines, environmental services, aerospace & defense, and media—sectors where strategic financial insight can be the difference between stagnation and transformation.

Raised with an unrelenting work ethic and deep cultural roots, John launched his professional journey after earning his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Boston College. His academic training laid a firm foundation for a career that would soon be marked by thoughtful analysis, operational pragmatism, and a strong command of market dynamics. Early on at GenTek Inc., which is a manufacturing conglomerate that was owned by a private equity firm, he navigated the intricacies of financial restructuring during a Chapter 11 process—a formative experience that seeded his lifelong expertise in distressed asset management and corporate turnarounds.

John’s transition into the world of high finance came through his role in investment banking at Credit Suisse in their Corporate and Investment Banking Division. As an Associate in Leveraged Finance Origination, he was responsible for developing detailed financial models, conducting and leading due diligences processes, analyzing scenario analyses which reflect the potential impact to the companies’ financial position under various economic cycles, and preparing credit memoranda that informed strategic lending and investment decisions for the investment bank. His tenure at the firm marked the beginning of a career-long commitment to rigorous credit evaluation and the art of capital structuring.

In 2008, John joined the Bank Loan Group at Trust Company of the West (TCW), where he took on greater responsibility as a Vice President and Credit Research Analyst. At TCW, he evaluated and managed investments in both primary and secondary leveraged loan markets, specifically for Collateralized Loan Obligation (CLO) and total return strategies. He developed and maintained financial models under various stress scenarios, focusing on liquidity, asset coverage, and relative value—skills that have since become core to his analytical toolkit.

Soon after the leveraged finance fund arm at TCW spun out as Crescent Capital in 2011, his promotion to Senior Vice President cemented his value to the research team and further elevated his leadership profile. John was instrumental in overseeing diversified investment strategies, including leveraged loans, high-yield bonds and structured credit, across sectors as varied as power & utilities, aerospace & defense, and environmental services. His sectoral breadth, coupled with a consistent ability to forecast market trends, reinforced his standing as a trusted voice within investment committees and among institutional partners.

After nearly a decade with Crescent Capital, John brought his talents to Vibrant Capital (formerly DFG Investment Advisers) as Director and Senior Credit Research Analyst. When unforeseen circumstances saw the sudden departure of key portfolio managers, John swiftly assumed day-to-day operational control over the CLO strategy in addition to participating with existing and potential investors—demonstrating calm, competence, and a commanding grasp of investor expectations. His adaptability and decision-making under pressure were a testament to both his technical acumen and his leadership maturity.

John most recently served at Canaras Capital, where he worked side-by-side with co-portfolio managers and served as part of the investment committees to manage funds focused on CLO and total return loan strategies. He maintained coverage over critical sectors such as leisure, entertainment, hospitality, food & beverage, and media, and his daily contributions shaped fund direction, investor engagement, and risk management. Through consistent modeling, stress testing, and forward-looking projections, John ensured the funds maintained resilience in a rapidly shifting economic landscape.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, John’s career reflects a personal ethos rooted in service and long-term value creation. While he has never actively pursued the public spotlight through speaking engagements, he is often sought after for his wisdom and judgment by peers and investment colleagues alike. A native Korean speaker with experience in both domestic and international investing, John brings a global perspective to every boardroom he enters.

Today, John seeks to leverage his multifaceted experience by serving on corporate boards where his blend of strategic thinking, operational understanding, and investment rigor can generate meaningful impact. Whether advising on complex balance sheet issues, steering through restructuring processes, or enhancing stakeholder value through disciplined governance, John remains deeply committed to the companies and people he serves. His personal mission is to act not just as a financial steward but as a collaborative partner dedicated to sustainable business growth.
