“Strive to be the best version of yourself while helping others become the best version of themselves.”
Greg Butterfield has spent four decades building companies, taking them public, and leading them through acquisitions and periods of significant change. His background spans enterprise software, cybersecurity, renewable energy, banking, and artificial intelligence, built on a consistent approach: operational discipline paired with a focus on helping people and organizations reach their potential.
As Founder and Managing Partner of SageCreek Partners, Greg built an investment platform for early and growth-stage technology companies, one designed around what the firm calls Mentor Capital: pairing capital with the hands-on involvement of executives who have actually built and run companies before. SageCreek’s team works directly with founders on the real challenges of growing a business, from raising capital and building out technology to sharpening go-to-market strategy and preparing for an exit. SageCreek has invested in more than thirty technology companies, and under Greg’s leadership the firm has helped lead nine of those companies to valuations exceeding $1 billion. That track record is why founders come to SageCreek for guidance that goes beyond a check, it comes from people who have been through the startup-to-IPO path themselves and know where the hard parts actually are.
Greg’s own executive record reflects that experience directly. He led Altiris as Chairman, President, and CEO through its IPO on NASDAQ and its subsequent acquisition by Symantec, where he stayed on as Group President overseeing a Server and Storage Business Unit representing roughly $4 billion in operations. As President and CEO of Vivint Solar, he led the company through its 2014 IPO on the New York Stock Exchange, growing it into the second-largest residential solar installer in the country before its acquisition by Sunrun for approximately $3.2 billion.
Greg has brought that same operating and governance experience to a number of boards, including Venafi (cybersecurity), Omniture (web analytics, later acquired by Adobe), Move Networks (video streaming), Needle (customer engagement), ContentWatch (content security), and RES Software (workspace management).
He has also remained active in Utah’s technology and education community, chairing the Board of Trustees at Utah Valley University and the Utah Information Technology Association. His recognitions include an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award, designation as a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer, induction into the Utah Technology Hall of Fame, and BYU’s Distinguished Alumni Award.
Greg speaks regularly at banking conferences, executive leadership summits, and university programs on entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence, and business strategy.
Outside of his professional work, Greg enjoys mountain biking, surfing, and golfing. He and his wife, Shelly, support a number of charitable organizations. He is guided by a personal commitment to being a good husband, father, and friend, and to helping others reach their own potential.
