Dr. Diana L. Greene: Building Brighter Futures; One Student, One Teacher, One Community at a Time

“Always leave things better than you found them.”

Dr. Diana L. Greene is an accomplished education executive, visionary strategist, and advocate for equitable access to learning whose career spans more than three and a half decades. A nationally recognized superintendent and now Chief Executive Officer of the Children’s Literacy Initiative, Dr. Greene has dedicated her professional life to transforming organizations, empowering leaders, and creating systems where both people and performance thrive.

Her career reflects the qualities sought in modern board leadership: governance expertise, fiscal acumen, enterprise-scale management, and an unwavering commitment to equity and excellence. She brings to every role a blend of strategic foresight, operational discipline, and human-centered leadership—skills that translate seamlessly to corporate, philanthropic, and public-sector boards.

From her earliest days as a classroom teacher in Florida, Dr. Greene demonstrated a rare ability to inspire both students and colleagues. Her transition from teacher to administrator was driven not by ambition alone, but by a deep conviction that she could affect greater change through leadership. As she advanced through the ranks of Marion County Public Schools—first as Curriculum Coordinator, then Assistant Principal, Principal, and eventually Director of Staff Development—she became known as a leader who could see both the individual child and the systemic challenge. Her ability to build high-performing teams and elevate struggling schools became a hallmark of her leadership philosophy.

Over a decade as Deputy Superintendent in Marion and Manatee counties, Dr. Greene oversaw expansive educational systems encompassing thousands of employees and tens of thousands of students. In these roles, she co-managed multimillion-dollar budgets, implemented innovative staffing models, and designed districtwide frameworks that increased accountability, efficiency, and student outcomes. Her work in Manatee County was especially transformative: she reduced the number of low-performing schools, restored the district’s financial stability, and reestablished community trust through transparency and communication. Under her stewardship, the district achieved significant gains in graduation rates and fiscal health, demonstrating her ability to blend academic vision with strategic governance and financial stewardship.

In 2015, Dr. Greene was appointed Superintendent of the School District of Manatee County, where her leadership elevated the district to new levels of excellence. She championed teacher compensation reform, spearheaded successful funding referendums, and implemented comprehensive support systems that eliminated all failing schools in the district. Her reputation as a strategic communicator earned her recognition as Florida’s Outstanding Superintendent Communicator in 2017, a testament to her belief that reform succeeds only when stakeholders understand and support the mission.

Her success in Manatee County led to her appointment as Superintendent of Duval County Public Schools, the twenty-second largest district in the nation. Over the course of five years, she led with vision and courage, overseeing a $2.6 billion budget and more than 13,000 employees across 160 schools. Under her leadership, the district reached historic graduation rates and moved within a single percentage point of an “A” rating from the state of Florida. She navigated one of the most complex crises in modern education—the COVID-19 pandemic—by transitioning over 120,000 students to remote learning within one week, ensuring continuity of education and safety for families. Her ability to unite a diverse community around shared goals led to the passage of landmark funding measures that modernized infrastructure, raised teacher pay, and strengthened academic programs.

Dr. Greene’s leadership has always been underscored by her commitment to equity, innovation, and sustainable change. Her tenure in Duval County reflected a deep understanding of how systemic inequities shape outcomes, and her policies sought to dismantle those barriers through data-informed decision-making and culturally responsive instruction. For her outstanding leadership, she was named Florida Superintendent of the Year in 2021 and Florida Star Superintendent of the Year in 2022, among numerous other accolades.

In 2023, Dr. Greene brought her expertise and passion to the national stage as CEO of the Children’s Literacy Initiative (CLI). At CLI, she leads a $13 million national nonprofit committed to advancing early literacy through high-quality instruction, educator development, and family engagement. Under her direction, CLI has expanded its national footprint, diversified funding streams, and integrated technology and AI-based literacy innovations. Her tenure has strengthened the organization’s operational sustainability and positioned it as a national thought leader in education equity and innovation.
