Ben Golub is a four time successful CEO and entrepreneur, as well as a seasoned technology executive, board advisor, investor, and company builder whose career spans more than 35 years across enterprise software, cloud infrastructure, open source, SaaS, venture backed startups, and mission driven organizations. Known for helping companies move from early potential to meaningful scale, Ben has repeatedly stepped into complex environments where technology, market timing, organizational leadership, and strategic execution must come together. His career reflects a rare combination of operating depth and entrepreneurial instinct, shaped by experience as a CEO, business leader, advisor, investor, and board member. He has led multiple organizations to successful exits and unicorn valuations.
Ben’s professional journey began as a product manager and business development professional at Avid Technology, where he gained early exposure to the dynamics of growing innovative technology businesses. He later joined VeriSign, spending seven years in increasingly senior leadership roles, including leading multiple divisions as Senior Vice President and General Manager, with responsibility for Payments, Web Security, and Managed Security Services. He later served as Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President of Marketing and Government Affairs. These experiences broadened his command of enterprise technology, product positioning, market development, partnerships, government affairs, analytics, sales, and strategic planning while preparing him for the chief executive roles that would define the next phase of his career.
For the past 20 years, Ben has served as CEO of four early stage startups, leading three to successful exits and one to a multibillion dollar valuation. As President and CEO of Plaxo, Ben helped lead the company through a significant period of growth and strategic development before its acquisition by Comcast. Following the transaction, he remained with the organization as President of the Plaxo division within Comcast Interactive Media. This transition gave Ben valuable firsthand experience on both sides of the M&A process: building a company attractive to a strategic buyer and then helping guide the business within a much larger corporate environment. That perspective has become an important part of the insight he brings to founders, executives, investors, and boards.
Ben later served as President and CEO of Gluster, an open source, scale out storage company offering a software based alternative to traditional networked storage. Under his leadership, Gluster experienced rapid revenue growth, significant product evolution, organizational expansion, and the establishment of important channel relationships. Ben ultimately led the company through its successful sale to Red Hat, where Gluster technology became foundational to Red Hat’s growing storage business, yielding 20 times returns for most investors. The experience further demonstrated his ability to identify market opportunities, build organizational momentum, strengthen go to market execution, and position emerging technology companies for strategic outcomes.
Perhaps one of the most visible chapters of Ben’s career came when he joined Docker in 2013, prior to the release of version 0.1 of the company’s software. As CEO, he helped lead Docker from its earliest stage into one of the most influential companies in modern software infrastructure. During his tenure, Docker became synonymous with containerization, generated billions of downloads, reached a global developer community exceeding 100 million, achieved a valuation of more than $1 billion, and established relationships with hundreds of major enterprise customers. The company’s rise illustrates Ben’s capacity to help transform breakthrough technology into a category defining platform with global relevance. Docker is currently valued at more than $3 billion, is highly profitable, and generates close to $300 million in annual recurring revenue.
In 2018, Ben became Executive Chairman and CEO of Storj, continuing his focus on disruptive infrastructure technologies. Storj set out to redefine cloud storage through a decentralized model designed to improve economics, sustainability, security, durability, and performance. Ben led the company for more than six years as CEO before transitioning to Executive Chair, helping advance a model that utilized underused global computing resources as an alternative to conventional centralized cloud infrastructure. His tenure reinforced his reputation as an executive comfortable operating at the intersection of innovation, infrastructure, sustainability, emerging business models, and large scale technology adoption. Ben also helped secure and manage the successful sale of the company in December 2025.
Today, Ben remains deeply engaged with the technology and investment communities. He serves as a Venture Advisor to Mayfield Fund and has advised companies including MinIO, Streamlio, Chyme (CHYM), and Quilt Data. In 2026, he also joined the boards of advisors of three artificial intelligence companies: Applied General Intelligence, SecureG, and SolidCore.ai. Across these roles, Ben brings experience in enterprise software, cloud computing, product management, B2B infrastructure, go to market strategy, business development, strategic partnerships, venture capital, SaaS, M&A, entrepreneurship, and scaling organizations from early stage concepts into durable businesses. His perspective is particularly valuable because it comes not only from advising executives but also from personally confronting the challenges of capital allocation, hiring, positioning, organizational design, product market fit, market creation, and growth.
Ben’s influence extends beyond operating companies. He has written and contributed to numerous articles and has addressed audiences at major conferences, including events with more than 10,000 attendees. His ability to communicate complex ideas clearly has helped him engage developers, entrepreneurs, investors, executives, enterprise customers, and broader industry audiences. His international exposure, including experience connected to Uzbekistan, complements an academic background with a strong global and public policy orientation.
Ben earned a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy from Princeton University before completing both an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Master of Public Administration focused on International Development from Harvard Kennedy School. This multidisciplinary education has contributed to a leadership perspective that extends beyond technology alone. He understands how markets, public institutions, economic development, business strategy, social impact, and technological innovation interact, giving him an unusually broad lens through which to evaluate companies and opportunities.
Service has also remained an important part of Ben’s professional life. He has long supported nonprofit organizations focused on children and young people, including serving as an advisor and board member with Bay Area Friendship Circle, Partners for Youth with Disabilities, TechnoServe, and the Oshman Family JCC. Combined with his experience on nonprofit boards, these commitments demonstrate that his interest in governance extends beyond commercial outcomes. He understands that boards must balance mission, accountability, leadership support, stakeholder interests, and long term sustainability.
Now semi retired from full time operating leadership, Ben is intentionally seeking opportunities to remain active, intellectually engaged, and useful to organizations navigating growth and transformation. Lifelong learning is central to his outlook, and board service gives him an opportunity to continue learning while contributing decades of hard earned operating experience. Having sat on both sides of the table, as the CEO responsible for building companies and as an advisor or board member supporting those responsible for execution, he understands both the pressure leaders face and the value that thoughtful governance can provide.
Ben is particularly well positioned to advise companies that are building something ambitious from very little. He knows what it means to establish a category, recruit teams before certainty exists, refine products while markets evolve, earn enterprise credibility, develop partnerships, scale operations, navigate acquisitions, and create momentum around emerging technologies. He is open to working with both small and large organizations and remains particularly drawn to technology, B2B infrastructure, and businesses where innovation and scale are central to the strategy.
Outside the boardroom, Ben brings the same appetite for challenge and endurance to his personal pursuits. As a triathlete who also enjoys backpacking and hiking, he gravitates toward activities that demand preparation, resilience, perspective, and sustained effort. Those qualities mirror the way he has approached his professional life: ambitious goals are rarely achieved through a single breakthrough, but rather through discipline, adaptability, learning, and the willingness to keep moving forward.
