Tom Case: Aligning Purpose, People, and Performance for Lasting Impact

Published on:

Tom Case is a distinguished construction and development executive whose four-decade career reflects a rare combination of operational mastery, strategic foresight, and steadfast commitment to organizational excellence. Raised in a family of industry innovators, Tom was immersed early in the world of deep foundation drilling, gaining an appreciation for the discipline, integrity, and craftsmanship that define the construction profession. That foundation shaped not only his technical career but also his leadership philosophy: that successful organizations grow from clear purpose, aligned values, and the development of people capable of carrying a legacy forward.

After graduating from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in Construction Management, Tom launched his career at Granite Construction, where he spent twenty-seven formative years progressing from estimator to senior corporate officer. His early work in the field and on project teams gave him an intimate understanding of the realities faced by crews, managers, and clients—insight that later informed his leadership of large regional operations. As he advanced, Tom became known for his ability to integrate strategy with boots-on-the-ground execution, a capability that earned him increasing responsibility across multiple regional markets.

As a Vice President and Operating Group Manager, Tom oversaw major business units spanning Southern California, Arizona, Utah, Alaska, Washington, Nevada, and additional Intermountain and Pacific Northwest regions. These were dynamic years marked by alternative delivery innovation, infrastructure expansion, and the integration of several new acquisitions into the broader corporate framework. Tom guided these complex transitions not only through operational rigor but also through relationship-building, demonstrating the belief that organizations thrive when leaders cultivate trust, clarity, and accountability.

His success ultimately led to his appointment as Senior Vice President of Operations Services at Granite’s corporate headquarters. In this role, Tom led strategic planning, continuous improvement, M&A integration, materials management, fleet oversight, quality control, engineering services, and the advancement of information technologies across the enterprise. He became a respected architect of organizational alignment, sought after for his ability to simplify complex systems and create structures that reinforced sustainable performance. His leadership was instrumental in Granite’s evolution into a more cohesive and strategically unified organization.

Tom’s transition to Sundt Construction marked a new chapter where he embraced the unique cultural dynamics of an employee-owned ESOP company. As Chief Operating Officer and a member of the Board of Directors, he brought consistency and modernization to a diverse set of business units, introducing enterprise-wide training, project controls, and risk management practices that strengthened the organization for future growth. He also played a vital role in fostering stronger accountability and operational discipline without compromising the company’s long-standing values or entrepreneurial spirit. This period showcased Tom’s gift for honoring tradition while championing progress.

In 2018, Tom accepted the position of Executive Vice President at Replay Destinations, stepping into the owner/developer side of the industry. There he oversaw construction and design operations across a portfolio of complex resort developments in the U.S., North America, the Caribbean, and the Bahamas. The role broadened his perspective on planning, procurement, and contract stewardship from the owner’s vantage point, enriching his understanding of how collaboration among designers, contractors, and stakeholders can elevate outcomes. Tom often reflects that this shift in vantage point deepened his appreciation for diverse perspectives and reinforced the value of thoughtful governance in large-scale development projects.

In 2020, Tom founded TCM Services, LLC—a culmination of decades spent leading high-performing teams and guiding organizations through transformative growth. As Managing Principal, he advises contractors, owners, and design partners on strategic planning, organizational development, continuous improvement, and leadership succession. Over time, succession planning has become one of his most important areas of focus, a natural evolution from his strategic planning work. Tom recognized that many companies falter not from lack of opportunity but from a lack of prepared leaders ready to carry forward the mission. His advisory work reflects his belief that the most meaningful legacy any executive can leave is a team equipped to thrive long after the leader has moved on.

Tom’s impact extends well beyond corporate roles. He has served on national, state, and community boards including the Associated General Contractors of America, the Utah AGC Board, and multiple nonprofit organizations. His contributions to industry development include committee work for major national awards programs, participation in leadership councils, and consistent mentorship of emerging professionals. Whether in a boardroom, a jobsite meeting, or a community setting, Tom exemplifies service-driven leadership grounded in humility and purpose.

Throughout his career, Tom has remained committed to lifelong learning and personal growth. His international exposure, volunteer work, and engagement with educational institutions reflect an enduring belief in the power of collaboration and shared vision. He approaches every challenge with a balance of strategic clarity and emotional intelligence, ensuring that decisions support both organizational goals and the well-being of the people responsible for achieving them.

Today, Tom continues to invest his time and expertise in organizations seeking alignment, stronger leadership frameworks, operational excellence, and improved culture. He is selective but intentional about board service, motivated not by career necessity but by the opportunity to use his experience to help companies realize their ambitions. His guiding mission—to ensure that his work aligns with purpose both personally and professionally—remains central to every role he undertakes.
