Tim Backs: Turning Strategy Into Sustainable Growth and Lasting Value

Published on:

Tim Backs is a seasoned strategy, corporate development, and industrial business executive with approximately 30 years of professional experience spanning mergers and acquisitions, business leadership, strategic planning, pricing, integration, product development, and operational improvement. Throughout his career, he has worked at the intersection of strategy and execution, helping organizations identify opportunities, solve complex business challenges, strengthen competitive positions, and translate ambitious growth objectives into measurable results. His experience across automation, industrial products, materials, manufacturing, and related markets has given him a broad perspective on how companies create value through disciplined decision-making, innovation, and effective leadership.

Tim’s career has been distinguished by a progression from finance and transaction-oriented responsibilities into increasingly expansive strategic and executive leadership roles. Early in his career at Ernst & Young, he managed and performed audit engagements for public and private companies with revenues ranging from approximately $50 million to $500 million across manufacturing, retail, computer services, and venture capital. He also served as an interim controller for a high-profile client, contributing to a corporate reorganization and partial merger. This foundation strengthened his financial discipline, analytical capabilities, and understanding of the operational and financial factors that influence enterprise performance.

Tim subsequently spent 17 years with Emerson Automation Solutions, where his responsibilities evolved across acquisitions and divestitures, strategic planning, international management, general management, and business development. As Manager of Acquisitions and Divestitures, he performed or coordinated more than 25 financial due diligence reviews involving international acquisition and divestiture targets representing more than $1 billion in sales. His work also included closing balance sheet reviews and participation in significant final settlement negotiations, providing him with firsthand experience across the transaction lifecycle and establishing a foundation for the M&A leadership that would become a defining element of his career.

His responsibilities at Emerson broadened further when he became a Strategic Planner supporting executive leadership. In that capacity, Tim evaluated market characteristics and competitive landscapes for potential business platforms, with several opportunities ultimately presented to Emerson’s Office of the Chief Executive and Board of Directors. He conducted acquisition due diligence, analyzed global economic and sales trends, developed strategic communications, and supported initiatives focused on profitability, pricing, material inflation, product margins, and organizational structure. These assignments sharpened his ability to connect financial analysis and market intelligence with enterprise-level strategic decision-making.

Tim’s international leadership experience became particularly significant during his tenure as Managing Director of Emerson’s European Industrial Regulator business in Bologna, Italy. Responsible for an organization encompassing two factories and more than 20 sales offices, he led the business through a challenging economic environment while achieving record operating margins and executing a major restructuring. He repositioned the operation for subsequent record growth and profitability, developed a segmented European sales strategy, and introduced tools designed to improve commercial and operational effectiveness. His broader international exposure includes business experience across Europe, China, and Mexico, giving him a practical appreciation for the complexities of global markets, customers, cultures, and operating environments.

As Vice President of Emerson’s global LP Gas Equipment business, Tim further demonstrated his ability to lead through complexity. The business achieved record sales and profit despite significant disruptions, including the termination of its largest distributor and a major safety recall. He also worked with global sales teams to advance safety regulations in developing economies, contributing to regulatory adoption in India that helped drive a meaningful increase in global revenue. The experience reinforced a leadership philosophy centered on resilience, responsible decision-making, customer needs, and the ability to turn difficult circumstances into opportunities for stronger performance.

Tim later served as Vice President of Business Development and Acquisitions for Emerson Automation Solutions, where he led the development and pursuit of inorganic growth strategies for two multibillion-dollar business segments. During this period, he deployed approximately $1.3 billion of capital through four acquisitions and co-led the ideation and development of more than ten inorganic growth strategies for the broader Automation Solutions organization. His work required a combination of strategic foresight, transaction expertise, financial judgment, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to assess where acquisitions could create durable competitive advantage rather than growth for growth’s sake.

Building upon that experience, Tim joined Hyperion Materials & Technologies, a KKR industrial portfolio company, as Senior Director of Corporate Development. He led corporate development activities spanning strategy, acquisition funnel development, transaction execution, and integration. During his tenure, six acquisitions were completed, accounting for more than 20 percent of revenues and 35 percent of EBITDA while helping address capability gaps and reposition the company toward higher-growth and more profitable markets. His work demonstrated an ability not only to identify and execute transactions, but also to understand how portfolio choices, capabilities, market positioning, and integration collectively influence long-term enterprise value.

Tim continued this trajectory as Senior Vice President of Strategy & Corporate Development at Komar Industries, an ONCAP portfolio company. Leading strategy and corporate development, he oversaw acquisitions from funnel development through integration and completed eight acquisitions that represented more than 60 percent of revenue and 50 percent of EBITDA. These transactions helped address important capability gaps in core markets while expanding the organization into adjacent products and geographies. Beyond M&A, Tim helped build a strategic marketing function, advanced price realization initiatives, and contributed to the development of a product configurator within NetSuite, reflecting the breadth of his approach to value creation.

In parallel with his corporate leadership, Tim founded Backs M&A Advisory, LLC, leveraging more than two decades of strategy and transaction experience to advise clients on strategy development, target identification, acquisition funnel management, financial modeling, and transaction execution. His advisory experience complements his corporate background by allowing him to examine business challenges from both an executive operator’s and an advisor’s perspective. Across these roles, he has developed expertise in mergers and acquisitions, integration, pricing strategy, strategic planning, cross-functional leadership, business development, product management, sales management, process improvement, financial analysis, forecasting, competitive analysis, change management, and P&L leadership.

Tim’s academic foundation combines finance and economics with advanced business education. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Economics from Eastern Illinois University and later completed a master’s degree in Business at Washington University in St. Louis. The combination of financial training, strategic education, transaction experience, and hands-on operating leadership enables him to evaluate opportunities through multiple lenses—from financial performance and market attractiveness to organizational capability, operational feasibility, and long-term strategic fit.

As Tim looks toward board and advisory service, he is particularly interested in bringing his experience to small and mid-cap organizations where experienced, engaged leadership can have a meaningful impact on strategic direction and enterprise value. His interests include automation, oil and gas, material science, industrial materials, recycling, consulting, consumer packaged goods, and industrial goods. He is motivated by the opportunity to help leadership teams and stakeholders navigate complex problems, evaluate growth opportunities, strengthen strategic discipline, and expand their businesses. His career provides a particularly relevant perspective for companies considering acquisitions, integration initiatives, pricing improvements, portfolio decisions, international expansion, or broader transformations.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Tim values the discipline of continuous improvement and the satisfaction that comes from building something meaningful. His personal interests include running and woodworking—pursuits that, in different ways, reflect patience, persistence, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. Those same qualities are evident throughout a career built not around a single transaction or leadership assignment, but around a sustained ability to analyze challenges, bring people together, make informed decisions, and create lasting value. As he pursues board opportunities, Tim offers organizations the perspective of an executive who understands that successful strategy ultimately depends on disciplined execution, capable teams, sound judgment, and a willingness to address difficult questions.
