Ron Weszely: Creating Safer Operations Through Practical Leadership, Innovation, and Unwavering Integrity

Published on:

Ron Weszely is a highly accomplished operations, environmental, and safety executive whose career spans more than four decades of leadership across manufacturing, heavy industry, engineering, construction, environmental consulting, marine operations, and applied research. Recognized for his ability to transform complex operational environments into high-performing, safety-driven organizations, Ron has built a reputation as a trusted advisor who combines technical expertise with practical business leadership. Throughout his career, he has consistently demonstrated that operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and organizational culture are not competing priorities, but complementary drivers of long-term business success. His ability to bridge executive strategy with field-level execution has made him an invaluable leader to organizations operating in some of the world’s most demanding industrial environments.

Ron currently serves as Corporate Safety Officer for Applied Research Associates (ARA), where he oversees enterprise-wide safety and environmental initiatives supporting more than 2,200 employees across over twenty facilities throughout the United States. In this role, he leads the development and implementation of corporate safety management systems while also serving as Principal Technology Director and Senior Safety Manager at the internationally recognized Ohmsett National Oil Spill Response Research Facility. His responsibilities extend far beyond regulatory oversight, encompassing organizational culture transformation, continuous improvement initiatives, process innovation, and operational excellence. Through his leadership, Ron is helping build a company-wide culture where safety becomes a strategic advantage rather than simply a compliance requirement.

Before joining ARA, Ron spent more than thirty years building and leading Valparaiso Safety & Environmental Consultants, Inc., the consulting firm he founded to provide customized environmental, operational, and safety solutions to industrial clients throughout North America. Over the course of three decades, he advised organizations across steel manufacturing, nuclear-related industries, aerospace, defense contracting, chemical manufacturing, commuter rail, machine shops, concrete production, metal fabrication, wood processing, funeral manufacturing, and numerous additional industrial sectors. His firm’s practical, hands-on consulting approach earned the trust of clients in twenty-one states and three Canadian provinces while helping multiple organizations achieve OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star status and maintain exemplary regulatory compliance.

Ron’s consulting career established him as one of the industry’s most versatile safety and operational experts. His expertise encompasses OSHA compliance, EPA regulations, environmental permitting, Process Safety Management (PSM), Risk Management Planning (RMP), hazardous waste management, industrial hygiene, employee exposure monitoring, environmental remediation, thermal imaging analysis, confined space operations, emergency preparedness, active shooter preparedness, heavy equipment operations, and customized workforce training. Rather than offering standardized solutions, Ron built his reputation by designing programs that addressed each organization’s unique operational challenges while improving productivity, reducing risk, lowering insurance costs, and strengthening workplace culture.

In addition to his consulting accomplishments, Ron is an accomplished entrepreneur and inventor. As Founder and President of All-American Concrete Corporation, he developed innovative specialty concrete technologies, engineered volumetric mixing equipment, and managed complex infrastructure projects throughout North America. His engineering expertise contributed to major runway rehabilitation projects at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Midway Airport, Blue Grass Airport, and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel renovation beneath the Detroit River. His groundbreaking work in hazardous waste stabilization led to three United States patents that continue to demonstrate his ability to solve highly technical engineering challenges through creative, commercially viable innovation.

Earlier in his career, Ron successfully founded and operated additional businesses that expanded his practical understanding of business leadership and operational management. As President of International Marine Survey & Salvage, Inc., he directed complex marine construction, underwater salvage, vessel reconstruction, and diving operations while managing projects involving tugboats, workboats, barges, and commercial marine equipment. Simultaneously, through Wesco Home Improvements Corporation, he managed heavy construction projects involving concrete, excavation, electrical systems, carpentry, and heavy equipment operations. These entrepreneurial ventures provided Ron with firsthand experience leading organizations from the ground up while developing a comprehensive understanding of project execution, financial management, customer service, and operational efficiency.

Ron’s professional experience extends beyond private industry into public service and technical leadership. Early in his career, he worked as a Systems Programmer for the Chicago Police Department, overseeing computer system installations throughout the department, while also serving as a Community Service Deputy with the Cook County Sheriff’s Department. His credentials include a Department of Defense Secret Clearance and a Department of the Interior Public Trust Clearance, reflecting the confidence placed in his professionalism and integrity. He has also served his communities as a volunteer firefighter, Board President of the Lake Eliza Volunteer Fire Department, Commodore of the LaPorte Yacht Club, and in numerous civic leadership roles, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to service and responsible leadership.

Education has provided the scientific and technical foundation for Ron’s extraordinary career. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree, cum laude, in Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics from Loyola University Chicago before pursuing graduate coursework in Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Public Administration at the Illinois Institute of Technology. His professional qualifications include a U.S. Coast Guard 100-Ton Master License, Commercial Driver’s License, TWIC Card, Illinois Explosives License, HAZWOPER 40-Hour Trainer certification, multiple professional diving certifications, and extensive expertise in OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and numerous state environmental regulations. This multidisciplinary background allows him to evaluate complex operational issues from scientific, engineering, environmental, and executive perspectives simultaneously.

Beyond executive leadership, Ron has made meaningful contributions to both scientific research and industrial innovation. His published research in the Transactions of the American Fisheries Society and the Journal of Freshwater Ecology explored radio telemetry and habitat utilization in freshwater ecosystems, reflecting his early scientific interests and analytical mindset. His three U.S. patents involving hazardous waste stabilization and advanced mixing technologies further highlight his innovative thinking and engineering capabilities. Throughout his career, Ron has consistently demonstrated that innovation is most valuable when it creates practical solutions that improve safety, operational performance, and environmental stewardship.

As Ron looks toward corporate board service, he brings a rare combination of executive leadership, entrepreneurial success, operational expertise, technical innovation, regulatory knowledge, and governance experience. Having served on several boards throughout his career, he understands the importance of strategic oversight, risk management, fiduciary responsibility, and executive accountability. He is particularly interested in supporting organizations within steel manufacturing, nuclear energy, advanced manufacturing, machine shops, and sophisticated industrial operations, while remaining open to organizations across diverse industries. Motivated by a desire to remain active while expanding his professional horizons, Ron seeks opportunities where his decades of experience can help companies strengthen governance, improve operational performance, mitigate enterprise risk, and create lasting organizational value.
