Robert Cera is an accomplished banking executive, board director, and C-suite advisor whose career spans more than four decades across commercial banking, financial services, executive leadership, lending, governance, and mergers and acquisitions. Over 42 years, he has helped guide financial institutions through expansion, economic disruption, regulatory complexity, ownership transitions, mergers, and periods of significant organizational change. His career reflects a consistent ability to balance growth with sound risk management while building organizations capable of delivering sustainable performance over the long term.
Today, Robert serves as Executive Consultant with RJC Phoenix 1, LLC, where he advises executive management teams and boards of directors on strategy, governance, operating performance, risk, and organizational effectiveness. Drawing from decades in senior operating roles, he brings a practical perspective to the boardroom, helping leadership teams develop strategic roadmaps that are ambitious yet executable. His experience developing and executing merger and acquisition strategies also enables him to advise organizations facing consolidation, succession, ownership changes, and other transformational moments.
Prior to launching his consulting practice, Robert spent nearly nine years with Greenwoods Financial Group and Greenwoods State Bank, where he served as Vice Chairman, President, Co-CEO, and a member of the Board of Directors. During his tenure, the institution grew from approximately $177 million in assets to $730 million, marking a period of substantial development and value creation. Robert helped guide strategic and operational initiatives, strengthen executive and board effectiveness, and ultimately support the bank through its successful sale to a California-based investor in 2025.
Robert’s career has repeatedly placed him at the center of high-stakes transactions and institutional transitions. In 2016, he became Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Nicolet National Bank during the merger integration of Baylake Bank into Nicolet. His leadership during this critical period helped maintain organizational continuity, protect client relationships, and provide stability as two established banking organizations came together.
That role followed nearly a decade as Chief Executive Officer and President of Baylake Bank, a publicly traded Wisconsin community bank with approximately $1.2 billion in assets. Robert led all facets of executive management, including strategic planning, financial performance, lending, credit quality, regulatory compliance, and organizational leadership. His tenure included steering the institution through the extraordinary pressures of the 2008–2010 financial crisis and then positioning it for recovery and renewed growth. He ultimately negotiated and executed Baylake Bank’s merger with Nicolet National Bank in 2016, demonstrating the ability to evaluate strategic alternatives while balancing the interests of shareholders, customers, employees, regulators, and communities.
Earlier in his career, Robert served as President of State Financial Bank, a publicly traded Wisconsin community bank with approximately $1.5 billion in assets. He led the institution’s executive management while driving commercial and retail loan and deposit growth and maintaining a disciplined approach to financial performance, credit quality, and regulatory compliance. Robert also played a central role in negotiating and executing State Financial Bank’s sale to Associated Bank in 2005 and subsequently served as Regional President of Associated Bank’s Chicago Group during the post-merger transition.
Robert’s influence in the financial services industry has extended well beyond the organizations he directly led. He served as Chairman of the Wisconsin Bankers Association following six years of board and committee involvement, representing the interests of Wisconsin financial institutions before state and national policymakers. During his tenure, he advocated for regulatory reform, workforce development, and community banking priorities while successfully helping lead the negotiation and merger of Wisconsin’s two primary banking trade groups, creating a stronger and more efficient industry organization.
Throughout his career, Robert has also been a frequent spokesperson for the banking industry, giving him extensive experience communicating complex financial, regulatory, and strategic issues to professional audiences, legislators, stakeholders, and industry peers. His ability to translate technical matters into clear, actionable insight has been a defining strength throughout his executive and board service. He understands that effective leadership depends not only on making good decisions, but also on building alignment around those decisions.
Robert’s expertise encompasses commercial lending, small business lending, consumer lending, credit administration, financial analysis, treasury and cash management, portfolio management, strategic planning, regulatory compliance, stakeholder relations, mergers and acquisitions, and executive team development. His boardroom perspective is especially valuable because he has spent decades both serving as a director and working directly with boards as a chief executive. He understands the important distinction between governance and management while appreciating the operational realities executives face when carrying out board-level strategy.
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Robert built his career on a strong financial and analytical foundation. While his professional experience has been concentrated in banking and financial services, the leadership principles he brings to a boardroom—capital discipline, risk awareness, strategic clarity, governance, accountability, and organizational stewardship—are highly transferable. He is particularly interested in opportunities across finance and fintech, especially with organizations of 500 employees or fewer where his experience can have a direct and meaningful impact.
Having recently transitioned from full-time operating leadership, Robert is now intentionally dedicating more of his time to board and advisory service. He brings the benefit of lessons learned through economic cycles, financial crises, acquisitions, mergers, regulatory environments, ownership changes, executive transitions, and periods of rapid growth. His depth of boardroom experience allows him to contribute constructively from the outset, asking the right questions, identifying risk and opportunity, and supporting management without losing sight of a director’s fiduciary responsibilities.
At this stage of his career, Robert offers organizations something particularly valuable: seasoned judgment grounded in decades of firsthand experience. He understands how capital, credit, liquidity, risk, people, and strategy intersect, and he has repeatedly led institutions through moments when those factors had to be balanced carefully. For boards seeking a director who combines financial acumen with operational insight, governance experience, and a long history of trusted leadership, Robert brings a perspective shaped by both achievement and experience.
