Richard Hill: Building Financial Foundations That Power Sustainable Growth

Published on:

Richard Hill is a strategic finance executive, fractional CFO, and trusted business advisor with more than 15 years of experience helping organizations strengthen financial performance, improve operational visibility, and prepare for long-term growth. Throughout his career, Richard has developed a reputation for transforming finance from a traditional accounting function into a strategic business partner that enables smarter decision-making, stronger cash flow management, and sustainable enterprise value. His expertise spans financial planning and analysis, budgeting, mergers and acquisitions, financial diligence, operational finance, and business transformation, making him a valuable advisor to organizations navigating periods of growth, transition, or transaction.

Richard’s career has been built within highly specialized service organizations where operational precision and financial discipline are critical to success. His greatest depth of experience comes from the critical power, electrical contracting, and mission-critical services industries, where he spent the majority of his career building sophisticated financial infrastructures capable of supporting rapid expansion. He understands firsthand the financial complexities behind service contracts, field operations, technician utilization, project-based revenue, and equipment-intensive businesses. This practical operating experience allows him to provide financial leadership that is grounded not only in accounting principles but also in the realities of running service organizations.

A defining chapter of Richard’s career took place during his eight-year tenure with Quality Uptime Services, one of the nation’s leading providers of UPS and battery maintenance services for mission-critical facilities. Beginning as a Senior Accountant, he steadily advanced through positions of increasing responsibility before becoming Director of Financial Planning & Analysis. During this progression, he assumed ownership of virtually every financial function within the organization, including budgeting, forecasting, job costing, procurement, accounts payable, accounts receivable, board reporting, investor reporting, contract profitability analysis, and field operations performance measurement. His broad operational exposure gave him an uncommon understanding of how finance directly influences business execution.

While at Quality Uptime Services, Richard played a pivotal role in preparing the company for institutional growth and private equity ownership. He led the implementation of major enterprise systems, including NetSuite ERP and ADP Workforce Now, significantly modernizing the company’s financial infrastructure and reporting capabilities. He also managed buy-side financial diligence and post-acquisition integration activities for multiple acquisitions, helping the organization expand through strategic growth initiatives while maintaining strong financial governance. These accomplishments established the scalable financial framework that supported the company’s continued success.

Richard’s most notable professional achievement came when he led the sell-side financial process that culminated in Quality Uptime Services’ successful acquisition by ABM Industries. He directed the financial diligence process from preparation through closing, developed sophisticated financial models, strengthened internal controls, and produced the reporting infrastructure necessary to support institutional buyers. His ability to organize complex financial information into a clear investment narrative contributed significantly to a successful transaction. Following the acquisition, Richard remained with ABM Industries as Director of Financial Planning & Analysis, where he continued supporting the Mission Critical and Power divisions while helping integrate the acquired business into one of the nation’s largest publicly traded facility services organizations.

At ABM Industries, Richard expanded his strategic finance experience by operating within a Fortune 500 environment. Working alongside executive leadership, he supported budgeting, forecasting, enterprise reporting, and performance analysis across mission-critical operations serving data centers and other high-reliability facilities. His work helped provide the financial transparency required by both operators and investors in a capital-intensive industry where uptime, service quality, and operational efficiency are essential. This experience strengthened his ability to bridge entrepreneurial finance with the governance standards expected within large public companies.

Building upon these experiences, Richard launched his own advisory practice before co-founding Mission Critical Accounting & Advisory. As Co-Founder and Partner, he now provides fractional CFO services and strategic financial leadership to founder-led companies, growth-stage businesses, private equity-backed organizations, venture-backed companies, and specialty service providers. Together with his partner, Richard helps organizations navigate the critical moments where finance must evolve beyond bookkeeping into a strategic operating function. His clients rely on him to establish financial infrastructure, improve visibility into operational performance, develop forecasting processes, prepare for acquisitions or exits, and create systems that support scalable growth.

Richard approaches every client engagement with the perspective of someone who has personally experienced the challenges business owners face. Rather than serving as an outside consultant, he embeds himself within organizations to become an operational partner capable of solving practical financial challenges. His work focuses on improving contract profitability, forecasting cash flow, strengthening budgeting processes, optimizing reporting, enhancing internal controls, and creating financial systems that provide leadership teams with timely, actionable information. This hands-on approach has earned him the trust of entrepreneurs and executives seeking experienced financial leadership without the commitment of a full-time CFO.

Earlier in his career, Richard developed valuable financial expertise with Spectrum Enterprise, where he managed planning activities supporting more than $400 million in operating expenses across multiple business units. Prior to that, he held finance and accounting roles with PepsiCo and Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, building a strong foundation in corporate accounting, financial analysis, forecasting, and enterprise reporting. These experiences exposed him to world-class financial processes while broadening his understanding of diverse business models across consumer products, telecommunications, and luxury retail.

Richard complements his professional experience with a Master of Business Administration in Public Accounting and a Certificate in International Business from Iona University, along with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Western Connecticut State University. He continues investing in professional development through certifications in financial analysis, client advisory services, QuickBooks, fractional executive leadership, and emerging technologies including artificial intelligence. His commitment to continuous learning reflects his belief that exceptional financial leaders must evolve alongside the businesses and industries they serve.

Outside of his professional responsibilities, Richard enjoys golfing and values the discipline, patience, and strategic thinking the game requires. Those same qualities define his leadership style: thoughtful, analytical, collaborative, and focused on long-term outcomes rather than short-term results. Whether working with founders, executive teams, investors, or boards of directors, Richard believes that finance should empower organizations by creating clarity, reducing uncertainty, and enabling confident decision-making.

As he seeks opportunities to serve on corporate boards, Richard brings a unique combination of operational finance leadership, transaction experience, strategic planning expertise, and hands-on business building. Having successfully built finance organizations from the ground up, led complex M&A transactions, supported private equity ownership, operated within a Fortune 500 enterprise, and now advises growth-stage companies as a fractional CFO, he offers directors and executive teams a practical, value-oriented perspective. His ability to connect financial performance with operational execution positions him to help organizations strengthen governance, improve financial discipline, and create lasting enterprise value.
