Published on:

Micki Schaefer is a distinguished healthcare executive whose career has been built on a steadfast commitment to improving patient care, strengthening healthcare organizations, and developing high-performing teams that consistently exceed expectations. With more than 30 years of progressive leadership experience across acute care, post-acute care, hospice, palliative care, residential services, home health, value-based care, and healthcare operations, she has become recognized as an innovative leader capable of navigating complex healthcare environments while delivering measurable operational, financial, and clinical results. Her leadership philosophy is grounded in collaboration, accountability, and the belief that compassionate care and exceptional business performance are not mutually exclusive—they are inseparable.

Currently serving as Vice President of Operations for Beacon Specialized Living, Micki provides executive oversight for more than 65 residential group homes throughout Minnesota, serving individuals with developmental disabilities, behavioral health needs, and other specialized care requirements. She leads a management team overseeing more than 550 employees while directing operational strategy, financial performance, staffing initiatives, regulatory compliance, quality improvement, and organizational development. Through the implementation of Lean methodologies and performance improvement initiatives, she has strengthened operational consistency, enhanced compliance, and cultivated an organizational culture focused on accountability, continuous improvement, and exceptional service.

Prior to joining Beacon Specialized Living, Micki served as Director of Operations for CareCentrix’s Serious Illness Care at Home program, where she managed complex payer and provider relationships within a value-based healthcare model. Her leadership focused on reducing unnecessary hospitalizations through proactive care management while strengthening provider partnerships and optimizing reimbursement strategies. By implementing Lean principles to improve enrollment, renegotiating provider contracts, and developing strategic service delivery models, she exceeded enrollment goals and helped the organization surpass its fiscal budget by eighteen percent. Her ability to align operational execution with financial stewardship made her an invaluable leader during a period of organizational growth.

Micki previously held senior executive leadership positions with AccentCare Fairview Hospice and HealthEast Health System, where she directed large-scale hospice and palliative care operations serving hundreds of patients and managing budgets exceeding $50 million. She successfully led multiple regional branches, oversaw more than 250 clinicians, strengthened physician engagement, negotiated major vendor and payer contracts, and developed innovative partnerships that increased referrals and improved patient access to hospice services. During this time, she collaborated closely with health system executives and physicians to develop initiatives that reduced inpatient mortality while improving end-of-life care across the continuum.

Throughout her career, Micki has consistently demonstrated an exceptional ability to lead transformational change. She has successfully directed two mergers and acquisitions, integrated multiple healthcare organizations without compromising patient care, implemented electronic health record transitions, opened four outpatient palliative care clinics, secured more than $1.3 million in grant funding, and guided organizations through regulatory improvements and operational restructuring. Her Lean and Kaizen expertise has enabled organizations to improve efficiency, strengthen financial performance, and create sustainable systems that continue delivering value long after implementation. Her nationally recognized Lean work earned her the opportunity to present at a national leadership conference, reinforcing her reputation as both an operational innovator and thought leader.

Earlier in her career, Micki established a strong foundation in healthcare administration through progressive leadership roles in care management, business development, utilization management, admissions, marketing, and hospital operations. As Manager of Care Management, she led system-wide initiatives that dramatically reduced hospital length of stay while improving reimbursement processes and payer collaboration. As Director of Business Development and later Administrative Director, she expanded strategic partnerships, negotiated managed care contracts with leading insurers, developed referral growth strategies, and built collaborative relationships with physicians, executives, and healthcare organizations throughout Minnesota. These experiences provided her with a comprehensive understanding of healthcare delivery from both clinical and operational perspectives.

Micki’s educational accomplishments reflect her lifelong commitment to leadership and service. She earned her Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire before completing a Master’s Degree in Human Service Management and Social Work at the University of Minnesota, where she graduated with a perfect academic record. As a Licensed Graduate Social Worker and Lean-certified executive, she combines clinical expertise with executive business acumen, allowing her to bridge patient-centered care with strategic organizational leadership. Her ability to communicate effectively with physicians, clinicians, executives, board members, government agencies, and community stakeholders has earned her widespread respect throughout the healthcare industry.

Beyond her executive responsibilities, Micki remains deeply committed to advancing healthcare leadership and giving back to her profession. She has served on multiple advisory boards during her career, including the Honoring Choices Advisory Board, and previously chaired an Ethics Committee. She is also an accomplished keynote speaker, having presented at a leadership conference where she shared best practices in Lean process improvement and organizational transformation. Outside of work, she enjoys cooking, gardening, maintaining an active lifestyle through fitness, traveling, and spending time with her family—interests that reflect the balance, resilience, and compassion she brings to every aspect of her leadership.

Today, Micki is actively pursuing corporate board service because she believes organizations achieve greater success when diverse experiences, thoughtful governance, and collaborative leadership come together around a shared mission. She is passionate about contributing her extensive healthcare operations expertise, strategic planning experience, physician engagement knowledge, reimbursement insight, and transformational leadership skills to organizations seeking sustainable growth and meaningful impact. Her ability to guide organizations through complexity while maintaining a people-first approach makes her an exceptional candidate for advisory and corporate board leadership.
