    Published on:

Merrick G. Andlinger brings more than four decades of leadership in investment management, corporate strategy, and board governance, with a record of disciplined execution across sectors including precision manufacturing, cybersecurity, environmental sustainability, and energy innovation. As President of Andlinger & Company, Inc., a private investment firm founded in 1976, he has led the business with a long-term perspective, prudent capital allocation, and hands-on operational focus, contributing to the sustained growth of portfolio companies in both the U.S. and Europe.

Educated at Princeton University (B.A., English and American Studies) and the Stanford Graduate School of Business (MBA), Merrick developed a balanced foundation in both critical thinking and business strategy. His early career in investment banking—culminating in a Managing Director role at Smith Barney and co-head of its Global Energy & Power Group—included work on significant transactions such as the IPO of Union Pacific Resources and the downstream consolidation of Shell and Texaco into Equilon and Motiva. He also advised governments and global institutions on energy policy and privatization, gaining early exposure to international business dynamics and complex regulatory environments.

Since assuming leadership of Andlinger & Company in 1999, Merrick has overseen more than 25 investments. The firm’s results—highlighted by a net MoIC of 3.7x and a total MoIC of 7.4x, including a singular 100x return—reflect a consistent emphasis on value creation through operational improvement and strategic insight. Merrick’s approach blends financial rigor with a focus on sustainable, long-term outcomes, making the firm a respected participant in the private equity space.

Merrick has also taken on leadership roles within portfolio companies. As President & CEO of Pure Energy Corporation, he advanced early-stage renewable fuels innovation, securing federal and private sector partnerships. Later, as Executive Chairman of AgCert International, he directed the firm’s international expansion and helped bring it to a public valuation of over £100 million on the London Stock Exchange. At Teawolf, he led a financial and operational turnaround, transforming a loss-making business into a profitable enterprise within three years.

His experience spans sectors where innovation, regulation, and operational complexity intersect. He has played key roles in businesses ranging from advanced materials (Steward Advanced Materials, Lapp Insulators) to cybersecurity (Darkcubed, Dellfer, Veracity Industrial Networks) to wellness brands (HempFusion, Runa). Across these ventures, he has consistently focused on disciplined strategy, team leadership, and measurable results.

Merrick’s governance experience includes service on more than 25 boards, often as Chairman, encompassing both private and public companies with revenues ranging from startup scale to over $200 million. His committee work—across Audit, Compensation, Governance, Strategic Planning, Sustainability, and DEI—demonstrates a practical understanding of boardroom dynamics and effective oversight. He currently serves on the boards of MetaBrand, a specialty beverage formulator and co-packer, and Steward Advanced Materials, where he has lead critical strategic expansions. His nonprofit service includes the boards of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (advisory), the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment at Princeton University, and Montclair Kimberley Academy.

As an adjunct professor at Drew University, Merrick created and taught a course with literature as the primary texts, that integrated environmental sustainability and business leadership, mentoring students interested in entrepreneurship and impact. He continues to advise organizations and individuals working at the intersection of innovation and responsibility.

Merrick’s work has taken him across North America, Europe, South America, and Asia, giving him valuable cross-cultural insight and adaptability. Whether advising policymakers or navigating a company turnaround, he applies a global perspective grounded in firsthand experience.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Merrick is a dedicated sailor, golfer, cyclist, skier, and visual artist. These pursuits reflect a well-rounded perspective that complements his leadership style—pragmatic, engaged, and attentive to both people and performance.

Today, Merrick G. Andlinger continues to serve on corporate and nonprofit boards where his strategic focus, investment expertise, and governance experience can support forward-looking organizations committed to innovation, sustainability, and thoughtful growth.
