For more than four decades, Mark Thomas, CLU, ChFC has built a distinguished career at the intersection of insurance, financial services, strategic leadership, operational excellence, and relationship management. His professional journey has been defined by an ability to see the larger business picture while understanding how individual functions must work together to achieve meaningful results. From developing innovative insurance solutions and leading complex client relationships to advancing digital transformation and guiding multidisciplinary teams, Mark has consistently focused on converting vision into execution. His leadership philosophy is grounded in trust, collaboration, accountability, and a belief that sustainable growth comes from aligning talented people around a clearly articulated purpose.
Mark most recently concluded a nearly 20-year tenure with Aon Affinity, part of Aon plc, where he served as Senior Vice President and became a trusted leader within the firm’s association, consumer, and group program business. A central component of his responsibilities was providing strategic and operational leadership for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ Insurance Trust and AICPA Member Insurance Programs. In this capacity, Mark worked across operations, marketing, technology, finance, compliance, underwriting, and executive leadership to ensure that sophisticated insurance programs continued to meet the evolving needs of the CPA profession. Rather than approaching leadership through the lens of a single functional specialty, he developed an integrated perspective that enabled him to connect these disciplines, establish priorities, motivate teams, and move complex initiatives from strategy to implementation.
The scale and responsibility of Mark’s AICPA work were substantial. He oversaw a portfolio encompassing eight insurance products, more than 250,000 policies, and over $500 million in premium contributions. He also managed critical relationships among AICPA representatives, the Insurance Trust’s Executive Committee, and underwriting, compliance, and marketing partners. Operating within this multifaceted environment required more than technical insurance knowledge; it demanded sound judgment, diplomacy, financial awareness, disciplined execution, and the ability to balance the expectations of numerous stakeholders. Mark became particularly effective at creating alignment among people with different functional responsibilities while keeping their collective attention centered on serving members and advancing the long-term objectives of the business.
Innovation has been another defining theme throughout Mark’s career. Recognizing how technology could improve both the customer experience and organizational efficiency, he directed the development of a self-service online portal and online enrollment capabilities for AICPA members. The platform enabled policyholders to manage coverage, apply for insurance, obtain approvals, make payments, and access interactive tools, calculators, and educational resources through a more convenient digital experience. Mark also contributed to the design, development, and implementation of a Salesforce-based customer relationship management platform. By integrating information from multiple systems, the initiative gave risk advisors a more comprehensive, 360-degree view of individual, association, and group clients and demonstrated Mark’s ability to champion technology as an enabler of stronger service and smarter business decisions.
Mark’s record of product development further reflects his understanding of how strategy must ultimately translate into relevant solutions for customers. Among his accomplishments was introducing a level-premium term life insurance product designed to address 10- and 20-year protection needs. He also helped develop Group Life and Long-Term Disability plans for CPA firm employees, emphasizing competitive net cost structures and features specifically designed for professionals within the accounting community. His involvement extended to operational policies and procedures governing the administration of complex insurance programs, including the Group Variable Universal Life Plan. These experiences strengthened his ability to evaluate markets, understand customer needs, coordinate specialized teams, and guide products and programs through the operational realities required for successful execution.
Mark’s leadership responsibilities expanded further when he was appointed President of Aon Affinity Life & Health, a role he held concurrently with his Senior Vice President responsibilities for nearly four years. As President, he provided operational and strategic direction for the expansion of the Life & Health division while continuing his leadership responsibilities associated with the AICPA Insurance Trust. Managing both positions simultaneously demonstrated his capacity to operate across multiple levels of an organization, from establishing strategy and growth priorities to guiding functional leaders responsible for implementation. His approach has consistently centered on providing people with direction and purpose, creating productive environments, and empowering subject matter experts to contribute their best thinking toward a shared objective.
Before joining Aon Affinity, Mark developed a broad perspective through leadership, entrepreneurial, advisory, sales, and financial services roles. As Director of Financial Services with USI Affinity, he managed sales and marketing activities for life, disability, and long-term care products serving physicians, attorneys, educators, business owners, and other professional markets. He later pursued several entrepreneurial ventures within insurance and financial planning, working directly with individuals and business owners on retirement planning, wealth accumulation, income strategies, and insurance protection. He also managed a multiline insurance agency serving individuals, families, and businesses. Those experiences gave Mark an appreciation for both sides of enterprise leadership: the structure and resources of major organizations and the adaptability, customer focus, and accountability demanded of entrepreneurs.
Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Mark has established himself as an industry voice through writing, public speaking, professional education, and association involvement. His articles have addressed subjects ranging from life insurance and personal liability protection to financial transitions, retirement considerations, newlywed finances, and financial conversations for younger professionals. His work has appeared through outlets and organizations serving the accounting profession, including CPA Practice Advisor and CPA societies. He has also participated as a speaker at industry events, including the AICPA ENGAGE Conference, where he addressed Long-Term Care Insurance. His ability to communicate complex financial and insurance concepts in practical terms has complemented his executive leadership and allowed him to contribute to the broader professional dialogue surrounding financial preparedness and risk management.
Mark’s professional foundation includes a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Gettysburg College, with a minor in Classics, as well as the respected Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) designations. His career has encompassed life, accident and health, property and casualty, disability, long-term care, employee benefits, risk management, financial planning, strategic planning, business development, account management, and specialty insurance programs. He has also maintained a decades-long relationship with the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors and has served the Montgomery County Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors in leadership capacities, including as a former president. These professional connections reflect a longstanding commitment to the insurance and financial services community and to continued engagement with colleagues across the profession.
Service and social responsibility are equally important components of Mark’s outlook. His community involvement has included fundraising and participation supporting the Philadelphia Eagles Autism Foundation and Philadelphia Phillies ALS-related events. These activities reflect a personal conviction that leadership should extend beyond organizational performance and encompass a willingness to contribute time, experience, and energy to causes that benefit others. Throughout his career, trust and service have remained particularly meaningful principles for Mark—values that align naturally with an insurance profession built around keeping promises and supporting people through moments of uncertainty and need.
Now retired from his full-time executive career, Mark is focused on applying his experience where it can create meaningful value for organizations as a board member, advisor, or consultant, particularly within insurance and financial services. He brings the perspective of an executive who has managed major accounts and portfolios, shaped strategy and vision, led functional leaders, introduced new products, championed digital transformation, and navigated complex stakeholder environments. He does not define his value by claiming to be the deepest technical expert in every discipline. Instead, his strength lies in understanding how operations, marketing, finance, technology, customer experience, product development, and leadership intersect—and in bringing the right people together to turn strategic priorities into measurable outcomes.
At this stage of his career, Mark is particularly motivated by the opportunity to help leadership teams evaluate challenges, identify opportunities, sharpen strategy, and execute with discipline. His four decades of experience have taught him that organizations rarely succeed through strategy alone; success requires alignment, communication, talented people, thoughtful decisions, and sustained execution. Whether contributing from the boardroom, advising an executive team, or mentoring emerging leaders, Mark offers a combination of institutional perspective and practical business experience. His objective is straightforward: help organizations build on their strengths, navigate change intelligently, grow revenue responsibly, and create enduring value for customers, employees, stakeholders, and the communities they serve.
