M. Barry Bausano is a distinguished financial-services executive, hedge fund leader, investor, and corporate director whose career spans more than four decades across global markets, asset management, institutional finance, risk management, and executive leadership. Currently serving as Chief Executive and Chief Investment Officer of Holyoke Street Capital, Barry brings an uncommon combination of investment judgment, operating expertise, governance experience, and strategic leadership developed across some of the most influential institutions in global finance. Throughout his career, Barry has worked at the intersection of markets, management, and risk, building a reputation for navigating complex financial environments while maintaining a clear focus on organizational discipline, long-term strategy, and responsible decision-making.
Barry began his career in fixed income trading at Kidder, Peabody & Co., where he developed a foundational understanding of U.S. Treasury securities, fixed income futures and options, money markets, corporate bonds, financing, and repo markets. Rising to Vice President of Fixed Income Trading, he gained firsthand experience in the mechanics of capital markets and the importance of disciplined risk-taking. That early immersion in trading established the analytical framework that would shape the next several decades of his career: understand the structure of the market, identify asymmetric opportunities, manage downside exposure, and make decisions with conviction when conditions demand it.
His career soon expanded into the world of global macro investing, where Barry took on increasingly significant responsibilities at Tiger Management, Steinhardt Partners, Moore Capital Management, and later Red Wolf Capital Management. At Tiger Management, he led the macro trading desk across interest rates, currencies, and derivatives and played a central role in the design, execution, and risk management of a substantial G-7 swap-options portfolio during the European Exchange Rate Mechanism crisis. At Steinhardt Partners, Barry managed global macro portfolios through periods of significant currency and emerging-market volatility, including the Mexican “Tequila Crisis.” He later joined Moore Capital Management as a portfolio manager and Director of Asian Markets, managing strategies involving Asian currencies, European rates, emerging markets, and derivatives through some of the most consequential macroeconomic dislocations of the era.
Barry’s entrepreneurial instincts developed alongside his investment career. He co-founded Argonaut Capital Management, helping launch a $400 million macro hedge fund and developing trading, risk oversight, personnel, and business infrastructure from the ground up. He later founded Red Wolf Capital Management, where he served as Chief Executive and Investment Officer and launched a fund to manage the Credit Suisse Macro Strategies Fund. These experiences gave Barry more than portfolio-management expertise; they required him to understand the complete architecture of an investment organization, from trading and risk to operations, governance, capital formation, infrastructure, and executive decision-making.
In 2002, Barry joined Deutsche Bank, beginning a 16-year tenure that would establish him as a leading authority on hedge funds, prime brokerage, global equities, and institutional client businesses. As Global Head of Hedge Funds, he was responsible for Deutsche Bank’s Global Markets hedge fund client franchise, coordinating relationship management, sales coverage, risk, legal matters, credit, infrastructure, and launch consulting across products and geographies. Under his leadership, hedge fund clients generated more than $3 billion in annual revenues and represented approximately 25% of client activity, reflecting both the scale of the franchise and Barry’s ability to integrate complex businesses around the needs of sophisticated institutional clients.
Barry’s responsibilities at Deutsche Bank continued to expand. As Global Co-Head of Markets Prime Finance, he oversaw a broad portfolio of businesses encompassing treasury and balance-sheet management, financial-resource management, portfolio-finance risk, synthetic equity trading, securities lending, equity prime brokerage, futures and options, OTC clearing, complex finance, capital introduction, and institutional sales. The organization generated approximately $1.7 billion in annual revenues, managed roughly $350 billion in gross financings, and included approximately 440 direct personnel. During this period, Deutsche Bank’s prime brokerage franchise received repeated industry recognition, including being ranked the number-one global prime broker by Global Custodian for seven consecutive years from 2008 through 2014.
Barry subsequently assumed responsibility for Global Markets Equities in the Americas, overseeing cash equities, derivatives, absolute-return strategies, and prime finance across a major regional platform. He ultimately became President and Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Bank Securities Inc., in addition to serving on its Board of Directors and chairing its Risk Committee. In that capacity, Barry shared responsibility for corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and executive oversight of a U.S. broker-dealer and Futures Commission Merchant with approximately 4,000 employees and a roughly $150 billion GAAP balance sheet. His responsibilities encompassed treasury, finance, legal, credit, operations, risk, and technology, giving him an unusually comprehensive understanding of how a major financial institution operates at the strategic, operational, governance, and regulatory levels.
The breadth of Barry’s leadership has also placed him in direct dialogue with many of the world’s most important financial and governmental institutions. Throughout his career, he has liaised with, presented to, and testified before organizations including the Federal Reserve, U.S. Treasury, Securities and Exchange Commission, FINRA, Commodity Futures Trading Commission, International Monetary Fund, and the United States Senate. These engagements reflect Barry’s ability to translate highly technical financial-market issues into clear strategic and policy-oriented perspectives, as well as the level of responsibility he has carried on matters involving market structure, institutional risk, regulation, and the hedge fund industry.
Following his tenure at Deutsche Bank, Barry continued applying his investment and operating expertise through macro discretionary trading, hedge fund consulting, and advisory work. From 2021 to 2023, he served as a Principal and Chief Operating Officer of Taconic Capital Advisors, a $7 billion investment firm focused on credit, event-driven, and real-estate strategies. Barry was responsible for the firm’s non-investment functions, including finance, operations, technology, legal, administration, marketing, and investor relations. He chaired the Management Committee and Business Infrastructure Group and served on committees addressing portfolio risk, valuations, counterparties, cybersecurity, ESG, and DEI, while also managing episodic tail-risk hedging programs involving equities, foreign exchange, and interest rates.
Today, through Holyoke Street Capital, Barry continues to combine investment management with hedge fund consulting and strategic advisory work. His expertise spans hedge fund management, asset management, derivatives, executive management, portfolio construction, risk management, business strategy, strategic planning, financial-resource management, and organizational leadership. Barry’s value to boards and executive teams lies not simply in his command of finance, but in his ability to connect capital markets with governance, operations, regulatory considerations, organizational design, and enterprise risk. Having served as a trader, portfolio manager, founder, chief investment officer, chief operating officer, chief executive, corporate director, and committee chair, he evaluates business challenges from multiple perspectives rather than through a single functional lens.
Barry has also made significant contributions to the broader financial-services profession. He served on the Boards of Directors of both the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association and the Managed Funds Association and is a Life Member of the Council on Foreign Relations as well as a member of the Economic Club of New York. Barry was selected as a David Rockefeller Fellow through the Partnership for New York City, was named among HFM’s “50 Most Influential People in Hedge Funds,” and was inducted into Global Custodian’s Industry Legend Hall of Fame. His thought leadership includes contributing a chapter to Global Macro: Theory and Practice, and his market perspectives have appeared across leading financial media, including CNBC and Bloomberg television as well as the Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News, Reuters, and Dow Jones Newswires.
Barry’s academic background further reflects the combination of analytical rigor, leadership, and competitive drive that has characterized his professional life. He earned his A.B. in Economics from Harvard College and later completed executive education at the Harvard Kennedy School in Investment Decisions and Behavioral Finance. As a collegiate athlete, Barry was a two-time captain of Harvard’s varsity wrestling team, earned multiple All-East and All-Ivy honors, competed in the 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials in freestyle wrestling, and was an alternate for the United States Junior World Wrestling Team. The discipline, preparation, resilience, and accountability demanded by elite athletics have remained consistent themes throughout his approach to markets, business, and leadership.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Barry has remained actively engaged in civic, educational, community, and governance organizations. His service has included leadership roles with the Harvard College Fund and the Owl Club Graduate Board, membership on the President’s Council of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, service as Rear Commodore and a member of the Board of Governors of the Devon Yacht Club, and prior advisory involvement with Outward Bound USA. Barry has also contributed to his community through youth soccer coaching and Boy Scouts leadership. An avid sailor and golfer, he values competition, teamwork, preparation, personal responsibility, and the opportunity to continue learning through challenging environments.
At this stage of his career, Barry is particularly interested in board and advisory opportunities that are intellectually engaging and allow him to contribute actively to meaningful business challenges. He brings the perspective of someone who has taken risk, managed risk, built businesses, led major institutional platforms, advised sophisticated investors, operated within highly regulated environments, and guided organizations through complex market conditions. His experience across nearly every dimension of institutional finance enables him to challenge assumptions constructively, assess opportunities through both strategic and risk-oriented lenses, and help leadership teams make decisions that support durable growth. For organizations seeking a director or advisor who combines financial sophistication with hands-on management experience and global perspective, Barry offers a depth of judgment developed through decades of consequential decision-making.
