Today, Jon spends most of his time serving as the Executive Vice President of the Board of The Volgenau Foundation (https://volgenaufoundation.org), and serves as the delegated executive chairman of the board. He is actively involved in the day-to-day executive-level work of the foundation. In this role, he guides one of the country’s noted family philanthropies as it advances critically important initiatives supporting land conservation, climate change solutions, education, and classical music. An example of Jon’s ability to conceptualize and grow a company was his work as one of the two initial Co-Secretariats of the Alliance for Water Stewardship (https://www.a4ws.org) from 2007 through 2010. In that capacity, Jon directed and built the international network responsible for designing and developing the world’s first global water certification program. This groundbreaking initiative established internationally recognized standards for responsible water management and remains a benchmark for companies, municipalities, and organizations committed to sustainable resource practices. In the private sector, he has also served as General Counsel for Natural Systems Utilities; in the public sector as General Counsel for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs and as the U.S. representative of the Stockholm International Water Institute. These diverse experiences allow him to guide companies and organizations through complex strategic, operational, finance, and governance challenges. Jon also has a strong international perspective, shaped through extensive international business travel and professional engagement across virtually every continent. Board service has been a constant throughout Jon’s career. He has served on corporate and nonprofit boards for decades, and across investment management, environmental conservation, philanthropy, education, and arts & culture. His board service has included companies and organizations such as Ridgewood Capital, New World Capital, Ausable Press, the U.S. Water Alliance, Princeton Symphony Orchestra, and others. Today, he serves on the boards of The Volgenau Foundation and the IUCN-US Fund, where he contributes his extensive experience to fiduciary oversight, executive leadership, governance, strategic planning, organizational growth, and mission-driven decision making.
An accomplished author, his published work includes articles in USA Today, The Boston Globe, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The American Prospect, Albany Times-Union, and other nationally-recognized publications. He also co-edited/co-authored the textbook Water and Latin American Cities: Challenges for Sustainable Development (2015), and in 2022 published his debut novel, Dissonance. Outside of his professional responsibilities, Jon enjoys classical music (B.A. magna cum laude in music from Harvard), cycling, pickleball, hiking, reading, and meaningful conversation. These interests reflect his belief that leadership is enriched by intellectual curiosity, lifelong learning, physical well-being, and cultural appreciation.
