Jonathan Brielle: Honoring What Came Before, Imagining What Comes Next

Published on:

“The Best Idea Wins.”

Jonathan Brielle is a creative executive, entrepreneur, composer, producer, and nonprofit leader whose career spans more than four decades at the intersection of entertainment, technology, intellectual property, and organizational innovation. He has built businesses, developed original entertainment properties, created opportunities for emerging talent, and helped established institutions embrace new ways of thinking and working.

From Broadway and Las Vegas to international entertainment productions, corporate ventures, and AI-assisted filmmaking, Jonathan has built a career around one defining principle: preserving the essential value of established traditions while creating opportunities for future generations.

His leadership brings together entrepreneurial vision, emotional intelligence, and practical business judgment, informed by firsthand experience navigating technological disruption, evolving audiences, and changing industry dynamics.

Jonathan’s professional journey began with a commitment to music, storytelling, and the development of creative communities. He studied music, theater, business, and law at New York University through its innovative University Without Walls program, pursuing an interdisciplinary education that would inform his career as both an artist and entrepreneur.

His early experience at Eventide, working with emerging audio technology and recording facilities, sparked a lifelong interest in combining artistic expression with technological innovation. In the late 1970s, Jonathan created, hosted, and produced New York’s first Songwriters Room at Uncle Lulu’s, bringing emerging artists together with established industry professionals.

The series attracted celebrated songwriters and performers, including Doc Pomus, Sammy Cahn, Shawn Colvin, and Patti Scialfa. It also established a model of mentorship and collaboration that would become a defining feature of Jonathan’s later work developing new artists and original entertainment.

Building on his early work in artist development, Jonathan became National Projects Director of the Songwriters Guild of America, where he created educational programs, industry panels, and professional development opportunities for songwriters. Working within an organization rooted in America’s Tin Pan Alley tradition, he helped connect its established legacy with a new generation of artists navigating a changing music industry.

His responsibilities also included songwriter advocacy and intellectual property protection. Testifying before the Copyright Royalty Tribunal, he challenged record industry arguments for maintaining a two-cent ceiling on mechanical royalties, advocating for songwriters whose livelihoods depended on their compositions rather than their own recordings. This experience deepened his understanding of creator economics, institutional stewardship, and the importance of protecting intellectual property while embracing technological and commercial change.

The experience reinforced a principle that would guide much of his subsequent work: helping established organizations evolve without losing the values that made them important in the first place.

Jonathan subsequently expanded his career into professional theater as a composer, lyricist, playwright, and producer. For Broadway’s Foxfire, starring Jessica Tandy, Hume Cronyn, and Keith Carradine, he composed the music and co-wrote lyrics with Hume Cronyn and Susan Cooper. He later served as Composer in Residence at Circle Repertory Company, collaborating with leading playwrights, directors, and performers.

His original musical Himself & Nora, for which he wrote the book, music, and lyrics, received an Outer Critics Circle nomination for Best Musical. Nightmare Alley, his musical adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham’s novel, was developed and presented at the Geffen Playhouse. These projects demonstrate his ability to develop original intellectual property, lead creative collaborations, and bring complex stories to the professional stage.

These productions required leadership across creative, technical, and business disciplines, coordinating large teams and delivering complex entertainment experiences in demanding commercial environments.

Jonathan’s executive production experience spans Broadway, national and international touring, branded entertainment, and major Las Vegas productions. As a producer for the Feld Organization, he helped bring Goosebumps Live to audiences in the United States and United Kingdom. He also served as Executive Music Supervisor for Rugrats Live! for Pace Entertainment and Nickelodeon, adapting established entertainment properties for live audiences.

In Las Vegas, Jonathan created MadHattan and wrote the book, music, and lyrics for Enter the Night, the production show that succeeded the legendary Lido de Paris at the Stardust Hotel. He served as music producer and musical director for both productions, each featuring a cast of approximately 45 performers. Running from 1991 to 1999, Enter the Night demonstrated his ability to honor an established entertainment tradition while introducing contemporary creative concepts to a changing audience.

His work across these productions required sophisticated coordination among performers, producers, technical teams, business partners, and creative stakeholders, reinforcing his capacity to execute ambitious projects in high-pressure commercial environments.

As an entrepreneur, Jonathan founded Brielle Studios, building a New York-based creative production company specializing in original music, corporate entertainment, product launches, and large-scale live events. Through the company and his broader production work, he developed projects for internationally recognized brands, including McDonald’s, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Budweiser, Gillette, and New York Life.

His productions ranged from executive presentations to major events at Madison Square Garden and international launches involving orchestras, performers, and multidisciplinary production teams. Jonathan maintained a core staff of writers, engineers, and producers, assembling additional creative and technical teams according to each project’s requirements. Managing these engagements demanded financial discipline, strategic planning, client relationship management, technological adaptability, and the ability to deliver consistently against immovable deadlines.

Jonathan distinguished himself by identifying the fundamental message behind each organization’s brand and translating it into emotionally engaging experiences that connected business objectives with audience expectations.

A defining dimension of Jonathan’s leadership has been his sustained commitment to nonprofit service, education, and the advancement of emerging creative talent. Since 2010, he has served as Executive Vice President of the Johnny Mercer Foundation, helping guide educational and creative initiatives that preserve the legacy of celebrated songwriter Johnny Mercer while supporting future generations of writers.

His responsibilities include helping oversee nationwide songwriting and lyric-writing education programs, building relationships with schools and arts organizations, and supporting initiatives that make creative learning more accessible. Jonathan views education not simply as the transmission of technical skills but as a means of fostering confidence, collaboration, and individual expression.

His work reflects an enduring commitment to ensuring that institutional legacies remain active sources of inspiration and opportunity rather than static achievements of the past.

Extending this mission, Jonathan founded and continues to lead the Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Grove at Goodspeed Musicals, an annual residency and creative incubator dedicated to developing original musical theater and supporting composers, lyricists, and playwrights. For more than fifteen years, the Grove has provided artists with professional mentorship, collaborative resources, and an environment in which promising ideas can evolve into fully realized theatrical works. Approximately 40 percent of projects developed through the initiative have subsequently advanced into production, demonstrating the effectiveness of its development model.

Jonathan also co-founded The Development Wing with Tony Award-winning writer and composer Rupert Holmes, serving as Artistic Director and supporting the creation of new musical theater works. Together, these initiatives demonstrate his ability to establish sustainable creative ecosystems, develop strategic partnerships, and translate organizational missions into measurable artistic outcomes.

Recognizing the transformative potential of artificial intelligence, Jonathan has increasingly focused his entrepreneurial energy on redefining how original entertainment intellectual property is created, produced, and brought to market. As Founder and Artistic Director of VALA®, established in 2019, he leads a creative enterprise developing new entertainment business models that combine professional artistry with emerging digital technologies.

Through VALA®, Jonathan created Muzi™, a new short-form musical film format that brings together original stories and music written by professional artists, performances by real actors and singers, and AI-assisted filmmaking. Muzi is designed to create and distribute original musical entertainment at a fraction of traditional production costs, opening new opportunities for audience engagement, revenue generation, and intellectual property development. Successful properties may also expand into theater, film, licensing, and other entertainment markets.

Rather than viewing artificial intelligence as a replacement for human creativity, Jonathan advocates using technology to expand artistic possibilities while protecting authorship, ownership, and the economic participation of creators.

This entrepreneurial approach positions Jonathan at the intersection of entertainment, emerging technology, intellectual property monetization, and new business model development. His experience gives him a practical understanding of how disruptive technologies influence creative workflows, talent development, production economics, and competitive positioning.

Having personally navigated successive technological transitions throughout his career, he recognizes that innovation requires more than adopting new tools; it demands thoughtful consideration of organizational culture, commercial feasibility, stakeholder trust, and long-term value creation.

His current work demonstrates how established industries can embrace emerging capabilities without abandoning the human expertise and institutional knowledge upon which their success depends.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jonathan is distinguished by a leadership philosophy rooted in collaboration, empathy, intellectual curiosity, and respect for diverse perspectives. He believes effective leadership begins with listening carefully, understanding the motivations and concerns of others, and creating an environment in which people from different backgrounds and disciplines can work toward shared objectives.

His guiding principle, “The Best Idea Wins,” reflects his conviction that successful organizations benefit from open dialogue, constructive disagreement, and a willingness to pursue the strongest solution regardless of its source.

Whether collaborating with celebrated performers, emerging artists, corporate executives, investors, or nonprofit stakeholders, Jonathan approaches complex challenges with emotional intelligence and an ability to reconcile competing priorities without losing sight of the larger mission.

Jonathan’s professional influence extends beyond the organizations he has founded and led. Through decades of songwriter advocacy, artistic mentorship, educational programming, and creative entrepreneurship, he has helped strengthen the infrastructure supporting original artistic work and the individuals who produce it.

His experience spans intellectual property stewardship, strategic partnerships, brand storytelling, audience development, organizational transformation, creative production, and emerging technology. International work in the United Kingdom and other European markets has broadened his understanding of diverse audiences and collaborative environments.

His ongoing engagement with artificial intelligence, creator ownership, and the evolving economics of entertainment reflects a commitment to continuous learning and meaningful participation in the industries he helps shape.

As a prospective board member and strategic advisor, Jonathan brings a distinctive combination of executive judgment, entrepreneurial experience, nonprofit leadership, and firsthand knowledge of technological and generational disruption.

He is particularly interested in contributing to organizations operating within entertainment, media, technology, artificial intelligence, education, intellectual property, and creative industries, while remaining open to opportunities across other sectors.

His experience is especially relevant to companies seeking to strengthen innovation strategies, develop talent, preserve institutional value, engage changing audiences, or evaluate emerging business models. Comfortable working with organizations of varying sizes and stages of development, Jonathan brings the perspective of an executive who understands both the opportunities and operational realities associated with growth, transformation, and long-term sustainability.

At the heart of Jonathan’s professional journey is a personal mission to honor what came before while imagining what comes next. He believes successful transformation does not require abandoning an organization’s identity, but rather understanding its foundational strengths and finding new ways to express them in a changing world.

His career illustrates this philosophy through his stewardship of songwriting traditions, development of emerging theatrical talent, reinvention of established entertainment formats, and exploration of AI-assisted creative production.

With more than four decades of experience, Jonathan continues to build, mentor, innovate, and collaborate, bringing historical perspective and forward-looking ambition to every endeavor. His enduring objective is to help organizations and individuals recognize their potential, navigate change with confidence, and create meaningful opportunities for generations to come.
