John Guttormson is an accomplished governance and business leader with approximately four decades of professional experience spanning financial services, wealth management, investment products, product development, strategic planning, business development, pension oversight, education, and nonprofit leadership. Throughout his career, John has built a reputation for representing stakeholder interests while maintaining a disciplined focus on management performance, operational oversight, risk management, and long-term organizational health. He approaches leadership with the belief that effective governance is more than a system of controls—it is a means of improving performance, strengthening communication, encouraging accountability, and creating alignment between boards, executives, employees, clients, and the communities organizations ultimately serve.
John’s career has been particularly distinguished within the financial services and investment industries, where he has held progressively senior leadership positions and helped organizations develop, manage, distribute, and oversee sophisticated investment products and platforms. His professional journey includes leadership roles with IG Wealth Management, Richardson Partners Financial, Richardson International Limited, the University of Winnipeg, and his own firm, 50North Consulting. As Senior Vice President, Product at IG Wealth Management, and previously Vice President, Product Development and Director of Product Management, John developed deep experience at the intersection of strategy, product design, distribution, investment management, marketing, and executive decision-making. Earlier, as a founding partner and Vice President of Product at Richardson Partners Financial, he helped build capabilities within an emerging independent wealth management organization.
The scale and complexity of John’s responsibilities have given him a valuable perspective on both enterprise leadership and disciplined execution. He led an investment product team encompassing five distinct business units and held overall responsibility for a product shelf representing approximately $85 billion in assets. He also co-chaired an inter-company initiative that enabled the first international institutional distribution of retail investment mandates and researched, developed, and presented a business plan for consolidating multiple public pension plan assets based on the cost effectiveness of scale. His experience has required him to move comfortably between high-level strategic questions and the practical realities of implementation, regulation, distribution, risk, product performance, and stakeholder expectations.
Innovation has been another consistent theme throughout John’s career. At a start-up independent wealth management firm, he led the development, launch, management, and support of brokerage products for what became the fastest-growing Separately Managed Account program in Canada, growing from inception to approximately $1 billion in assets in four and a half years. He led the “Every Advisor, every branch, every quarter” wholesaling initiative and has extensive experience working directly with distribution teams to translate product strategy into market adoption. His accomplishments also include launching an Offering Memorandum risk-parity pool for accredited investors, helping introduce a Canadian-first U.S.-dollar-denominated money market fund with chequing services through a U.S. bank, and leading a team that created an innovative platform allowing investment advisors to incorporate investments into a unified client statement for discretionary portfolio management.
John’s expertise extends beyond product development into investment manager selection, due diligence, policy, oversight, and strategic relationship management. He has worked with more than 50 investment managers across traditional and alternative asset classes in both retail and institutional environments, addressing performance analysis, investment policy, contractual arrangements, oversight, relationship management, brand diversification, and marketing. His business-development capabilities have produced equally tangible outcomes, including raising approximately $300 million for an investment manager seeking broader distribution. He also led the redesign of a private pension plan, encompassing investment management and policy, portfolio construction, agreements, and plan governance, further demonstrating his ability to integrate financial expertise with fiduciary responsibility.
Board and trustee service has become an equally important dimension of John’s leadership. He currently serves as Board Chair of Agora Wealth Corp., an investment dealer serving independent investment advisors with approximately $3 billion in client assets under administration. He has also served the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre in multiple leadership capacities, including Board Chair, Co-Chair, Past Co-Chair, Foundation Board member, and Chair of its Advisory Council. In addition, John has spent approximately two decades as a trustee associated with the James Richardson & Sons Limited pension, providing oversight for a pension fund of approximately $500 million. These roles have given him extensive firsthand experience navigating the distinctive relationship among directors, board chairs, senior management, stakeholders, and organizational leadership.
His governance perspective has also been shaped by substantial nonprofit and community service. John’s past roles include President and Chair of Jazz Winnipeg Inc., Vice Chair of Youville Clinic, President of an international FileNet users group, Foundation Board Executive and Investment Committee Chair for St. Mary’s Academy, and board service with Plug In ICA and Hospice and Palliative Care Manitoba. He has additionally served on the Forks North Portage Investment Committee. Through these experiences, John has seen governance from the perspectives of commercial enterprises, investment organizations, cultural institutions, healthcare and community organizations, enabling him to appreciate that strong governance principles can travel effectively across industries while still respecting the distinct mission, stakeholders, and operating realities of each organization.
Communication is a central element of John’s leadership style. Over the course of his career, he has delivered numerous public and corporate presentations, led strategic-planning discussions, supported product launches, traveled to offices to educate and engage teams around new products, and chaired annual general meetings involving stakeholders and shareholders. His experience communicating sophisticated financial and strategic subjects has taught him the importance of making complexity understandable without diminishing its significance. That communication background extends into media as well: John has written for publications including the Winnipeg Free Press, has been quoted or referenced in numerous articles, and hosts the weekly “Bang + Whisper” radio program on UMFM 101.5 FM.
John has also brought his professional experience into the classroom. As an instructor with RRC Polytech’s International Business faculty, he taught subject matter including international political economy, economics, and entrepreneurship. His academic foundation includes studies in economics at the University of Manitoba and Marketing Management at York University’s Schulich School of Business, together with industry education through the Canadian Securities Institute and the Partners, Directors, and Officers course. His continuing education reflects a defining quality in his professional outlook: John considers himself a lifelong learner and actively seeks opportunities to broaden his perspective, understand emerging issues, and contribute what he has learned to new organizations and leadership teams.
Today, as Principal of 50North Consulting, John works with the investment industry and its clients with a focus on maximizing investment performance. His advisory work builds upon decades spent understanding how investment products are conceived, governed, positioned, distributed, monitored, and improved. That breadth enables him to bring a multidimensional perspective to the boardroom. He understands financial performance and investment strategy, but he also understands product, customers, distribution, organizational design, governance, marketing, risk, communication, and the human dynamics that ultimately determine whether a strategy succeeds.
John’s interest in additional board service is rooted in both curiosity and contribution. A lifelong learner, he continues to seek experiences that expose him to new organizations, industries, leadership challenges, and perspectives. At the same time, his extensive nonprofit service has reinforced his belief in giving back. He sees effective governance as a practical organizational advantage—one that can improve performance, sharpen decision-making, strengthen communication, clarify accountability, and help management teams and directors work toward common objectives. Although financial services represents a natural area of alignment, John views his governance experience as portable across sectors and is comfortable contributing to organizations of varying sizes and stages.
What John ultimately brings to a board is the perspective of someone who has spent decades making consequential decisions while remaining attentive to the people affected by them. He has led large product portfolios, helped build new financial-services capabilities, worked with investment managers and advisors, overseen pension assets, participated in complex governance environments, supported nonprofit missions, taught future business professionals, and communicated with audiences ranging from executives and directors to shareholders, employees, students, and the public. His approach is grounded in thoughtful questioning, preparation, inclusiveness, accountability, and an appreciation for the unique partnership between a board and its management team. For organizations seeking a director capable of combining financial acumen and strategic judgment with governance experience, communication skills, and a genuine desire to contribute, John offers a seasoned and highly adaptable perspective.
