“Work hard, be fair, don’t cheat our clients, don’t cheat our co-workers. Enjoy life.”
James W. Lakin is a seasoned executive and dynamic entrepreneur whose decades-spanning career blends entrepreneurial grit, operational excellence, and a lifelong commitment to leadership and service. With more than 30 years of executive experience, James is known for his hands-on business acumen, energetic spirit, and unwavering integrity. His career trajectory—from working Kansas farms and gas stations to founding, growing, and successfully exiting multiple businesses—exemplifies the American spirit of hard work, ingenuity, and resilience.
James’ early experiences laid the foundation for a lifelong passion for business and people. As a young man, he worked in agricultural and service industries, gaining an appreciation for honest labor and customer relationships. His first real entrepreneurial breakthrough came with the purchase of a single donut shop, which he expanded into four successful locations in just five years. While attending college, he simultaneously immersed himself in the retail side of the music industry, gaining valuable business insight that would propel him into a robust executive career.
His formal professional journey began at McGrew Color Graphics, where he quickly rose through the ranks from Credit Manager to President. Under his leadership, McGrew reached unprecedented financial milestones, including securing the company’s first $7 million sale with Fleer Corporation. His impact was so significant that the company was ultimately acquired by General Mills—a testament to the value James created during his tenure. Following a short-lived retirement, he founded U.S. Travel Guide, a nationwide advertising and publishing enterprise built from the ground up. Under his stewardship, the business grew to encompass 31 states and a 24-person team, before being sold to Trader Publishing Company.
Not one to rest long, James next ventured into real estate, founding Lamplighter Realty and serving the greater Kansas City metro area with distinction. As a licensed broker, he operated with a commitment to ethical practices and client success. When his wife’s health began to decline, James made the heartfelt decision to sell the company and devote himself to caregiving—a reflection of his deeply rooted values and personal integrity.
James has been equally committed to community and faith-based leadership, holding board and executive roles with diverse organizations. These include serving as President and Secretary/Treasurer for McGrew Color Graphics, Co-Chairman of Missouri Central Credit Union, and board positions at the Printing Industries Association of Kansas City, Midwest Baptist Theological Seminary, and various Nazarene churches in Missouri, Arizona, and Texas. His leadership has been a cornerstone in both professional and faith communities across multiple states.
Academically, James earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Business Management, and Marketing from Liberty University, completing much of his coursework remotely while working full time. His ability to balance professional responsibilities with academic achievement reflects a disciplined, goal-oriented mindset.
James’ mission today is to empower organizations and mentor rising leaders by leveraging the lessons and insights gained through decades of executive success. Whether guiding boards, building startups, or nurturing future talent, James brings a rare combination of practical experience, financial savvy, and servant leadership to every endeavor he touches.
