Etienne Nel is an internationally recognized capital markets executive, exchange founder, blockchain innovator, and wealth management leader whose career has been defined by one consistent mission: expanding access to financial markets through innovation, sound governance, and modern infrastructure. For more than three decades, he has operated at the intersection of traditional finance and emerging technology, building the systems that allow capital to flow more efficiently while creating opportunities for investors, institutions, and businesses alike. His work reflects a rare ability to combine strategic vision with practical execution, transforming complex financial concepts into regulated, commercially viable solutions that serve both institutions and individual investors.
Guided by the vision of creating “a world where every person, regardless of geography, wealth, or circumstance has access to the financial tools and services that were once reserved for the privileged few,” Etienne has devoted his professional life to modernizing financial markets. Rather than simply participating in the evolution of financial services, he has consistently been among those shaping its future. Throughout his career, he has focused on solving some of the industry’s most complex challenges, including improving liquidity for traditionally illiquid assets, designing efficient market infrastructure, modernizing settlement systems, and introducing blockchain technology into regulated financial environments.
Etienne’s professional journey began in South Africa’s banking industry, where he developed a strong understanding of treasury operations, foreign exchange, settlement, and liquidity management while working at FirstRand Bank. This early experience provided him with an appreciation for the operational foundations that support global financial markets. His responsibilities in balancing foreign exchange books, processing international SWIFT payments, and improving treasury reporting established a disciplined approach to financial operations that would remain a defining characteristic throughout his career.
Building on this operational foundation, Etienne transitioned into capital markets through HSBC before joining Investec Securities, where he quickly established himself as a respected investment professional. As Head of the Pretoria office, he successfully grew assets under management from approximately R300 million to more than R3 billion over a six-year period. Leading teams responsible for portfolio management, private client advisory, and investment strategy, he demonstrated that sustainable growth is built upon trust, disciplined investment processes, and long-term client relationships. These formative leadership experiences strengthened both his commercial acumen and his appreciation for the importance of governance within financial institutions.
Etienne continued expanding his leadership responsibilities at FNB Securities South Africa, where he served as Regional Head for Gauteng. During his tenure, he oversaw more than R11 billion in client assets across thousands of investors while managing multidisciplinary teams spanning wealth management, securities dealing, portfolio management, administration, and over the counter private market trading. As a member of the executive committee, as well as the investment, risk, and technology committees, he contributed to strategic decision making at one of South Africa’s leading financial institutions.
During this period, he recognized an opportunity to fundamentally improve access to private market liquidity and founded the over the counter (OTC) trading platform at Singular Systems, where he served as Managing Director. Under his leadership, the platform facilitated transactions exceeding R25 billion while serving more than 530,000 shareholders. He introduced the concept of controlled liquidity, enabling companies to provide structured shareholder exit opportunities without compromising long-term enterprise value. Long before private markets became a global investment trend, Etienne was designing governance frameworks and secondary trading mechanisms that balanced investor access with corporate stability.
This experience established him as one of the region’s foremost experts in private market infrastructure and liquidity design. His work reflected an increasingly clear focus on creating liquidity solutions for assets that traditionally lacked efficient secondary markets.
Etienne’s entrepreneurial vision reached its fullest expression through the founding of ZAR X, South Africa’s first new licensed stock exchange in more than one hundred years. As Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, he led the organization from concept through regulatory approval to full commercial operation, navigating a rigorous licensing process while assembling executive leadership, developing technology platforms, establishing governance frameworks, and engaging continuously with regulators. Under his leadership, ZAR X introduced a world first for a regulated stock exchange, real-time T+0 settlement, demonstrating that highly efficient capital market infrastructure could coexist within a fully regulated framework. The exchange also expanded access to investment opportunities for more than 12,000 investors while facilitating transactions exceeding R19 billion, representing a significant contribution to the modernization of South Africa’s financial markets.
One of Etienne’s most significant accomplishments has been his pioneering work in blockchain-enabled financial infrastructure. Rather than approaching blockchain as a speculative technology, he recognized its practical application in improving efficiency, transparency, and accessibility within regulated financial markets. His leadership contributed to the development of what is widely recognized as one of the world’s first tokenized mutual fund platforms operating on ERC20 blockchain infrastructure. This achievement demonstrated that tokenization could successfully bridge traditional finance and digital assets while maintaining robust governance, investor protection, and regulatory compliance. His work positioned him among an exclusive group of executives globally who have successfully translated blockchain innovation into regulated financial products serving institutional and private investors. While serving as Chief Executive Officer of ZAR X, a licensed financial market infrastructure, Etienne represented the organization on the South African Reserve Bank’s Intergovernmental Fintech Working Group (IFWG), which promotes responsible fintech innovation, oversees the Regulatory Sandbox, and fosters collaboration among the South African Reserve Bank, National Treasury, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority, and other key regulatory bodies.
As CTO of Capital Engine, a fintech private markets platform, Etienne operates at the forefront of financial innovation. He leads the company’s technology strategy, driving initiatives that enhance operational excellence and platform scalability, including the development of proprietary CRM capabilities and the advancement of tokenized investment infrastructure for private markets. He is responsible for ensuring that all technology platforms and processes are designed in compliance with applicable regulatory frameworks, while meeting the highest standards of security, governance, and operational resilience. His ability to integrate emerging technologies into regulated financial environments reflects his belief that innovation succeeds when it strengthens governance, improves client experience, and delivers sustainable commercial advantage.
Etienne’s expertise extends beyond financial markets into broader organizational leadership. Throughout his career he has built executive teams, secured regulatory approvals, raised capital, guided corporate strategy, developed technology platforms, and cultivated productive relationships with regulators, institutional investors, boards, and clients. His leadership style reflects a balance of strategic thinking and disciplined execution, grounded in integrity, transparency, and a deep respect for fiduciary responsibility. He is equally comfortable discussing market structure with regulators, advising high-net-worth investors, collaborating with software developers, or presenting strategic initiatives to boards of directors.
Academically, Etienne holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Investment Management from the University of Johannesburg, and he earned the prestigious Certified Stockbroker designation, CSb(SA), a postgraduate qualification awarded through the University of the Witwatersrand. He has further strengthened his professional credentials through securities trading qualifications, financial advisory certifications, and leadership within South Africa’s financial services industry. His lifelong commitment to learning has enabled him to remain at the forefront of an industry experiencing unprecedented technological transformation.
Outside of his executive responsibilities, Etienne enjoys photography, bird watching, and farming—interests that reflect patience, observation, and an appreciation for long-term stewardship. These personal pursuits mirror many of the qualities that have defined his professional career: thoughtful decision-making, attention to detail, and a belief that sustainable success is achieved through careful cultivation rather than short-term gains. His vision for financial markets extends beyond technology itself; it is rooted in creating systems that empower individuals, strengthen economies, and broaden access to opportunity.
Looking ahead, Etienne remains committed to helping financial institutions navigate the transition from traditional finance to digitally enabled capital markets. Whether advising boards, leading strategic transformation, or developing innovative market infrastructure, he continues to focus on building practical solutions that improve liquidity, expand market participation, and enhance investor confidence. His unique combination of capital markets expertise, exchange leadership, blockchain innovation, wealth management experience, and regulatory insight positions him as one of the most accomplished financial infrastructure executives of his generation. His legacy is not simply measured by the organizations he has led, but by the lasting impact of the systems he has helped build—systems designed to make finance more efficient, more transparent, and more accessible for generations to come.
