His entrepreneurial interests extend beyond healthcare and academia. As Founder and CEO of AnchorPoint Holding Group, LLC, Dr. Smith has developed an additional perspective as an owner and residential real estate investor, with experience involving investment, development, and property management. Through long-term and short-term residential real estate, he has gained practical exposure to acquisition strategy, financing and refinancing, revenue analysis, capital allocation, asset improvement, operating performance, hospitality, and risk management. Before launching his current entrepreneurial ventures, Dr. Smith built an extensive executive career in higher education. As the fourth President of the University of Mobile, he was responsible for institutional leadership encompassing financial performance, academic programming, organizational effectiveness, campus development, community engagement, and long-term strategy. During his presidency, the university improved its federal Composite Score sufficiently to be removed from the Title IV watchlist, realigned its budget, completed a multimillion-dollar campus renovation, increased fundraising, strengthened community partnerships, expanded academic offerings, and established a College of Health Professions. His administration also developed the university’s first two doctoral programs and advanced numerous other institutional initiatives designed to strengthen enrollment, academics, infrastructure, and organizational sustainability.
Earlier, Dr. Smith served in senior leadership roles at Anderson University, including Provost and Vice President for Strategic Initiatives. As Provost, he led approximately 140 full-time faculty across eight schools and colleges while managing academic and library budgets, promoting operational efficiency, developing new healthcare graduate programs, examining program economics, and contributing to university-wide strategic planning. He helped introduce innovative enrollment and academic models, including a concierge-style enrollment approach that contributed to growth in adult and graduate enrollment. These experiences strengthened his ability to evaluate complex organizations, align resources with strategic priorities, challenge inefficient operating models, and translate institutional vision into measurable action.
A significant chapter of Dr. Smith’s career was also spent at Union University, where he served as Dean and Professor of Nursing and Executive Director of the Center for Excellence in Health Care Practice. Under his leadership, the School of Nursing grew into a substantial multi-campus operation encompassing approximately 55 faculty and staff, while enrollment increased 79 percent over nine years. He developed graduate and doctoral programs spanning nurse anesthesia, executive leadership, nurse practitioner education, and nursing education, while overseeing numerous successful accreditation processes. Throughout these roles, he demonstrated a recurring ability to identify opportunities for institutional growth, build the academic and operational infrastructure required to pursue them, and create programs capable of producing long-term value for students, universities, healthcare systems, and their communities.
Dr. Smith’s executive accomplishments are reinforced by more than three decades in nurse anesthesiology. He has served as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in multiple clinical settings while simultaneously building an extensive career in academic healthcare leadership. His earlier positions included leadership of nurse anesthesia programs at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, where he was involved in program creation, restructuring, clinical-site development, curriculum, accreditation, faculty leadership, and graduate education. Maintaining a connection to clinical practice has given him a valuable perspective on patient care, provider workforce needs, clinical operations, quality, risk, and the day-to-day realities that healthcare organizations must reconcile with larger strategic and financial objectives.
Education and lifelong intellectual development have remained central to Dr. Smith’s career. His academic preparation includes an ALM in Management from Harvard University Extension School, Harvard University’s Finance for Senior Executives program, a PhD in Leadership from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, a PhD with an emphasis in anesthesia from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, an MSN, and foundational nursing and nurse anesthesia education.
