Dr. Cunningham’s passion for dentistry took root early, culminating in his acceptance into The Ohio State University College of Dentistry after his junior year. He completed his dental degree in 1974 and was immediately commissioned into the United States Air Force, where he undertook a rigorous general dentistry residency at MacDill Air Force Base. There, he received advanced training in anesthesia and sedation, with a strong emphasis on oral surgical procedures—training that would prove foundational to his patient-centered approach throughout his career.

Following his military service, Dr. Cunningham launched a private practice in Columbus, Ohio, while simultaneously joining the faculty of the OSU College of Dentistry. Over six years as a clinical instructor, he not only taught but continued to learn, immersing himself in a dynamic academic environment. In 1982, driven by a desire to deepen his clinical expertise, he began a residency in Prosthodontics at OSU, completing it in 1985. That same year, he contributed to pioneering research on MRI imaging of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), co-authoring three groundbreaking articles published in the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry in 1987 and presenting his findings at the International Association of Dental Research.

Throughout his clinical career, Dr. Cunningham has exemplified a rare blend of scientific rigor and artistic sensibility. He co-founded the Worthington Dental Group in 1991 alongside his late partner, Dr. Robert H. Tootle. Under their leadership, the practice evolved into a multidisciplinary center of excellence, serving thousands of patients with a philosophy rooted in innovation, quality, and compassionate care. Dr. Cunningham later became the sole CEO of the practice, further expanding its reach by establishing the Comprehensive Dental Implant Center—one of the region’s most advanced facilities for implantology.
