Dr. Derrick E. Felton is a distinguished leader, educator, and advocate with over two decades of experience in social work, mental health counseling, and organizational leadership. As a U.S. Army Disabled Veteran, Dr. Felton combines his military discipline and extensive expertise in psychology and social work to create impactful solutions that promote holistic wellness, equity, and empowerment. His career spans diverse industries, including education, healthcare, and nonprofit organizations, making him a multifaceted professional dedicated to driving meaningful change.
Currently, Dr. Felton serves as an Adjunct Faculty member at California State University – East Bay, where he contributes to the Master of Social Work program, preparing culturally responsive social workers to address the needs of children, families, and mental health communities. At De Anza College, he balances dual roles as a Mental Health and Wellness Counselor and Adjunct Professor, providing mental health support to students while teaching psychology with a focus on the interplay of thought, behavior, and social dynamics.
Dr. Felton’s commitment to veterans is evident through his extensive work with organizations such as Vitas Healthcare, where he served as a Veteran Liaison Social Worker, providing psychosocial assessments and counseling for veteran patients and families. His work not only offered critical support but also bridged gaps between hospice services and external healthcare providers, ensuring seamless care for veterans and their families. He continues this mission as the Veteran Social Worker with Alameda Care Hospice.
As a NorCal President of the Society for Social Work Leadership in Health Care (SSWLHC), Dr. Felton leads initiatives that enhance the coordination and effectiveness of healthcare systems addressing psychosocial components of health and illness. His role amplifies his dedication to transforming healthcare landscapes and advocating for systemic improvements that prioritize mental health and equity.
Dr. Felton’s educational background includes a Doctorate of Social Work from the University of Southern California, where he was inducted into the Phi Alpha Honor Society for his academic excellence and commitment to social work leadership. He holds a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master’s degrees in Business Administration and Public Administration from the Keller Graduate School of Management, further enhancing his strategic and organizational capabilities.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Felton is a servant community leader. As Board President of Allen Temple Health and Social Services Ministries, he spearheads programs that support economically disadvantaged families through education, spiritual guidance, and innovative approaches to community stability. Additionally, as a Co-Chair for the University of Pennsylvania Alumni Interview Program, Dr. Felton serves as an ambassador, connecting with prospective students and fostering a supportive network for future generations.
Dr. Felton’s dedication to mentoring and advocacy extends to his role in the Fathers’ UpLift US Therapist Recruitment Fellowship, where he was named Fellow of the Year for 2023-2024. This prestigious program aims to increase the representation of Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC ) therapists in the mental health and addiction fields, aligning with Dr. Felton’s lifelong mission to create inclusive and supportive professional spaces.
