Derreck Travers: Connecting Supply Chain Strategy to Margin, Growth, and Customer Experience

Published on:

“Turn logistics from a line item into a growth lever.”

Derreck Travers is a supply chain and logistics executive, transformation leader, and advisor whose career has been built around a deceptively simple question: what is the supply chain actually costing the business, and what would become possible if leaders could see that cost clearly? Across more than three decades, Derreck has built, scaled, and rebuilt the networks that move finished goods through e-commerce, luxury retail, distribution, manufacturing, and global transportation environments. His approach combines rigorous cost modeling, carrier competition, operational discipline, and customer experience with a leadership philosophy grounded in candor, evidence over opinion, and respect for the people closest to the work.

Derreck’s perspective was shaped long before he reached the executive suite. Raised in British Columbia in a farming and trades family, he began his career close to the physical realities of commerce, first working as a customs broker and later moving into transportation management in the steel industry. There, logistics was tangible: rebar and merchant bar products had to move reliably by rail, flatbed truck, and barge. Those early experiences established a practical operating foundation that has remained central to his leadership style. Derreck learned to view transportation not as an abstract corporate function, but as an interconnected system in which cost, capacity, service, inventory, technology, and human judgment all have consequences.

His career reached a defining stage at Amazon, where he spent more than 14 years taking on increasingly complex operational, product, and global expansion responsibilities. Early in his Amazon tenure, he optimized a full-truckload line-haul network across 12 fulfillment centers, reducing per-unit transportation costs from $0.36 to $0.10 while significantly improving trailer utilization. He subsequently developed an alternative regional small-parcel carrier network and air-freight strategy across North America, generating substantial annual savings while reducing dependence on traditional integrated carriers and strengthening Amazon’s negotiating position. These assignments established a pattern that would define his career: challenge assumptions embedded in established networks, create competition, build better operating mechanisms, and translate logistics improvements into measurable financial results.

Derreck later expanded his scope into global reverse logistics, customer experience, product quality, and international network deployment. As Senior Product Manager for Worldwide Returns Operations, he directed a reverse-logistics network spanning 33 return centers in 13 countries, generating more than $160 million in savings while reducing refund times from 12 days to less than one day. He subsequently led product-quality operations from Beijing, where his organization dramatically reduced quality defects and compressed investigation cycle times. In another leadership assignment, he managed teams across seven countries supporting technical self-service content and training for thousands of customer service associates. These roles broadened his expertise beyond transportation and reinforced his understanding that supply chain performance and customer experience are inseparable.

In the later years of his Amazon career, Derreck helped take the company’s logistics capabilities across borders at significant scale. Leading global expansion and carrier management, he managed deployment of Amazon’s last-mile small-parcel delivery network and associated logistics infrastructure across Australia, Brazil, Egypt, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates. His organization launched fulfillment centers, delivery stations, and supporting sort and engineering projects while operating against a multibillion-dollar budget. The work included expanding Amazon Logistics into major Australian and Brazilian markets and integrating the network in the Middle East and North Africa, where transportation costs declined while delivery capacity increased. His leadership credentials at Amazon also extended into talent: he served as an Amazon Bar Raiser, participating in the company’s internal process for maintaining a consistently high hiring standard.

After Amazon, Derreck brought that combination of scale, analytical rigor, and operating discipline to Saks Global as Vice President of Transportation and Logistics. Leading a 15-person team and transportation operations supported by a budget exceeding $300 million, he redesigned carrier strategy across small parcel, LTL, vendor inbound, inventory transfers, and customer returns serving both e-commerce and brick-and-mortar channels. His organization delivered approximately $120 million in annual cost reductions, improved cycle times, implemented a multi-carrier strategy, strengthened truckload utilization, deployed a Transportation Management System integrated with six internal systems, and unlocked more than $10 million in working capital through carrier-payment negotiations. At the same time, customer satisfaction improved and support contacts fell substantially, demonstrating his conviction that cost reduction and customer experience do not have to be competing objectives.

Derreck subsequently served as SVP of eCommerce & Business Development at SmartKargo, adding commercial growth, strategic partnerships, and business development to an already extensive operational toolkit. His work also placed him at the intersection of traditional logistics infrastructure and emerging delivery models. In 2026, he spoke at the American Supply Chain Summit about alternative delivery networks and their implications for the way modern supply chains are built and scaled. That same year, he appeared on Let’s Talk Supply Chain to discuss the use of passenger-airline networks in small-parcel e-commerce delivery and the opportunities for greater speed, reliability, visibility, and network flexibility.

Today, Derreck is the founder of Dromond Advisory, a fractional supply chain and logistics advisory practice serving founder-led and private-equity-backed businesses. His work focuses on organizations large enough for logistics inefficiency to materially affect margins but not always large enough to justify another full-time senior executive. Engagements span cost-to-serve modeling, multimodal carrier strategy and rebids, network design, third-party logistics performance, technology, leadership, and the operating cadence required to sustain improvements. His expertise encompasses transportation and logistics management, operational excellence, P&L optimization, reverse logistics, network design, carrier strategy and negotiation, 3PL management, TMS and WMS implementation, S&OP, forecasting, warehouse and fulfillment operations, customer experience, and cross-functional leadership.

Across his career, Derreck has managed billions of dollars in cumulative operating budgets and led teams across countries, cultures, disciplines, and time zones. Yet his leadership philosophy is not built around scale for its own sake. He is a builder of systems and people who believes durable performance comes from giving teams clear facts, meaningful accountability, and mechanisms they can actually operate. His record of developing talent reflects the same philosophy: leadership means creating an environment in which capable people can take on greater responsibility, make better decisions, and ultimately operate successfully without depending on the executive who built the system.

Derreck has also developed an increasingly visible voice within the broader supply chain community. His commentary and public appearances explore transportation economics, regional and alternative carrier models, automation, customer experience, and operating discipline. His perspective on changes reshaping transportation was published by Logistics & Transportation Review, where he addressed developments including shipment visibility, regional carrier competition, changing labor dynamics, and the need to design logistics networks for resilience as well as scale. He has also spoken publicly about continuous learning—a principle reflected in his longstanding habit of deliberately revisiting leadership concepts rather than assuming that experience eliminates the need to remain a student.

Beyond his operating and advisory work, Derreck serves as a Senior Advisor to Gonzaga University’s Customer Experience Leadership with AI certificate program and continues to contribute to industry conversations through speaking, podcasts, writing, and The Collective on Supply Chain Now. His interests outside work include economics and history as well as paddleboarding, pickleball, and golf. Based in Seattle and spending significant time in Central Idaho, he brings to his professional life the perspective of someone whose career has crossed warehouse floors, transportation networks, executive offices, international markets, and board-level conversations.

At this stage of his career, Derreck’s interest in board and advisory service is a natural extension of the work he has spent decades doing. He brings an operator’s understanding of what happens after a strategy leaves the boardroom: how assumptions translate into contracts, networks, systems, service levels, working capital, customer experiences, and frontline behaviors. For companies that manufacture, distribute, fulfill, or ship physical products, his perspective connects supply chain decisions directly to margin, resilience, customer loyalty, and growth. His objective is not simply to tell leadership teams how logistics should work, but to help them understand what their operations are actually telling them and build the mechanisms required to act on that evidence.

Character:
Derreck leads with candor, accountability, curiosity, and respect for the people closest to the work, believing that sustainable improvement begins with an accurate understanding of operational reality. His career reflects a commitment to developing people alongside systems, treating leadership not simply as delivering results but as building teams capable of sustaining those results.

Knowledge:
He brings more than three decades of experience across transportation, supply chain, e-commerce, distribution, reverse logistics, customer experience, network design, carrier management, technology implementation, and international operations. His experience ranges from the physical fundamentals of rail, truck, barge, and warehouse operations to multibillion-dollar global networks, sophisticated cost-to-serve models, and emerging delivery technologies.

Strategic:
Derreck connects operational decisions to enterprise economics, viewing logistics as a potential source of margin improvement, working-capital efficiency, customer differentiation, and scalable growth rather than simply an expense to control. He combines financial analysis with practical execution, translating strategy into carrier structures, operating cadences, technology, performance mechanisms, and accountable teams.

Communication:
Communicates complex supply chain challenges through evidence, operating realities, and business outcomes, allowing executives and frontline operators to engage around a common set of facts. His work as an industry speaker, podcast guest, writer, advisor, and cross-functional executive demonstrates an ability to translate technical logistics issues into clear conversations about cost, service, risk, customers, and growth.
