Denise Neumaier is an accomplished audit executive whose career reflects more than three decades of leadership dedicated to strengthening governance, mitigating risk, and promoting integrity across some of the world’s most respected financial institutions. Recognized for her expertise in internal audit, enterprise risk management, regulatory compliance, financial crimes, and corporate governance, Denise has built a reputation as a trusted advisor to executive leadership teams, audit committees, and regulatory agencies. Throughout her career, she has consistently demonstrated the ability to transform complex regulatory challenges into opportunities for organizational improvement while fostering cultures rooted in accountability, transparency, and continuous learning.

As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS), Denise has developed an exceptional depth of knowledge in regulatory compliance, financial crimes prevention, fraud identification, operational risk, internal controls, and strategic audit planning. Her expertise spans banking, lending, insurance, enterprise risk management, and financial services, allowing her to provide comprehensive oversight across highly regulated organizations. She has become particularly well known for her leadership in Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Economic Sanctions, Anti-Bribery and Anti-Corruption (ABAC), and enterprise-wide compliance programs, combining technical precision with strategic vision to strengthen organizations from the inside out.

Currently serving as Regulatory Compliance, Anti-Money Laundering, and Enterprise Risk Management Audit Executive at USAA, Denise leads independent audit programs that evaluate the effectiveness of governance frameworks, compliance controls, and enterprise risk management practices. She successfully built and developed a specialized audit organization responsible for supporting the company’s regulatory remediation efforts under significant enforcement actions while ensuring sustainable, regulator-validated improvements. Her leadership extends beyond traditional auditing, incorporating data analytics and artificial intelligence into continuous auditing methodologies that improve efficiency, increase coverage, and strengthen organizational insight. She has also played a pivotal role in advancing agile, risk-based auditing practices aligned with COSO and Institute of Internal Auditors standards.

Before joining USAA, Denise served as Senior Vice President and Audit Director at U.S. Bank, where she directed comprehensive financial crimes and regulatory compliance audit programs across domestic and international operations. During her tenure, she developed and executed a sophisticated risk-based audit strategy encompassing AML, Bank Secrecy Act compliance, OFAC sanctions, consumer protection regulations, vendor risk management, legal compliance, model validation, regulatory reporting, and enterprise governance. She managed annual audit plans exceeding 60,000 audit hours while leading a high-performing team of 35 audit professionals and consultants whose productivity consistently ranked among the highest in the organization. Her ability to recruit, mentor, and inspire talented professionals became one of the defining characteristics of her leadership.

Denise’s extensive experience working alongside domestic and international regulatory agencies distinguishes her as one of the industry’s respected compliance leaders. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the Federal Reserve Board, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, FINRA, the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation, the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, and the Central Bank of Ireland. She has successfully led audit validation efforts supporting complex consent order remediation initiatives while serving as a trusted liaison between financial institutions and regulatory authorities. Her ability to communicate with regulators while maintaining independent audit integrity has consistently strengthened organizational credibility and governance.

A hallmark of Denise’s leadership is her ability to combine technical excellence with practical business judgment. She believes effective audit functions should serve not only as independent assurance providers but also as strategic partners that help organizations anticipate emerging risks before they become significant issues. By leveraging continuous monitoring, enterprise risk assessments, procedural design, and data-driven decision-making, she has consistently improved organizational resilience while enhancing executive confidence in governance processes. Her forward-thinking approach has helped organizations adapt to evolving regulatory expectations while maintaining operational effectiveness.

Earlier in her distinguished career, Denise built a strong foundation through progressively responsible roles with PricewaterhouseCoopers, Firstar Bank, Associated Bank, and Scribner Cohen & Company. These experiences provided broad exposure to financial reporting, accounting, operational auditing, treasury management, commercial banking, tax, consulting, and internal controls. The diversity of these early assignments equipped her with a comprehensive understanding of financial institutions from multiple operational perspectives, allowing her to evaluate risk holistically while balancing regulatory expectations with business objectives.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Denise is passionate about mentoring future leaders and giving back to her community. She has volunteered with organizations including the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, Feeding America, Girl Scouts, and local educational organizations where she served as Treasurer and Past President of a Parent Teacher Organization. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with family, traveling throughout Europe and beyond, and exploring the outdoors. These experiences reinforce the personal values that have guided her career—integrity, respect, lifelong learning, and service to others.

As Denise explores opportunities for corporate board service, she brings a rare combination of executive leadership, regulatory expertise, governance insight, and practical business experience. Having spent decades presenting directly to Boards of Directors and Audit Committees, she understands the strategic information directors require to fulfill their fiduciary responsibilities and oversee organizational success. She is motivated by the opportunity to give back to organizations by helping strengthen governance, enhance risk oversight, and support long-term growth through informed, independent leadership.
