David Brous is a senior sales, marketing, and operations executive whose career spans more than four decades of building businesses, revitalizing brands, developing products, expanding distribution, and creating sustainable revenue and profit growth. With extensive P&L ownership and cross-functional leadership experience, David has worked across manufacturing, consumer products, office and school supplies, writing instruments, gifts, accessories, hand tools, and B2B markets. His career reflects a consistent ability to connect strategic vision with practical execution, whether developing a new product, restructuring a sales organization, opening a distribution channel, managing a major customer relationship, or guiding an organization through a broader commercial transformation. David brings the principles, business acumen, and leadership experience gained from working within Fortune 500 environments to smaller organizations seeking to grow and strengthen their operations. He is particularly motivated by opportunities to apply the discipline, strategic thinking, and proven practices of large enterprises in ways that are practical and impactful for smaller firms.
David began his professional career with Stanley Tools, where he served in product and marketing management roles from 1978 to 1983. He subsequently joined Esselte Pendaflex Corporation as Group Product Manager before progressing into increasingly senior sales, marketing, product development, and general management positions. These formative experiences established a foundation in product strategy, commercialization, customer needs, competitive positioning, and market development that would remain central to his leadership approach throughout his career. David complemented his professional development with a BS in Marketing and an MBA in Marketing Management from the University of Hartford.
His progression into senior leadership accelerated through roles with Budd Leather Company and Centis, where he ultimately became Vice President of Marketing and New Product Development. At Centis, David operated in a general management capacity with P&L responsibility for a $120 million division encompassing more than 5,000 SKUs. He helped grow the business from $17 million to $120 million through new and repositioned products, acquisitions, innovative promotional programs, and expanded distribution. His responsibilities extended across sales, marketing, customer service, finance, global sourcing, information technology, and distribution, while frequent interaction with directors and key customers strengthened his experience communicating strategy and performance at senior levels.
David continued building his executive leadership credentials as Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Westport Corporation and later as Director of Sales & Marketing for Sheaffer Pen USA, a division of BIC USA. At Sheaffer, he held responsibility for sales and marketing management, new product launches, budgeting, forecasting, and P&L performance across distribution channels. Among his accomplishments, David helped generate more than a 10% increase in sales and 20% bottom-line profit growth through the introduction of 15 new products, new distribution channels, and expanded brand awareness. He also restructured a national direct and independent sales organization while helping broaden the brand’s presence with major retailers and specialty channels.
His entrepreneurial and start-up experience became particularly evident as General Manager of Zip Notes, LLC. Reporting to the inventor and CEO, David was charged with building and running the operation, including its infrastructure, tactical business plans, go-to-market strategy, key accounts, financial management, and sales organization. He assembled and led a cross-functional organization while managing a national indirect sales team of approximately 60 representatives. The role demonstrated David’s ability to move beyond functional leadership and build the commercial and operational foundations an emerging company requires to transform an idea into a scalable business.
Since 2009, David has played a significant leadership role within Victor Technology Brands and its affiliated businesses, progressing through Vice President of Sales and Vice President of Sales & Marketing positions before returning to the Vice President of Sales role in 2024. His responsibilities have included leading sales and marketing activities across mass, food, drug, variety, e-commerce, home center, and commercial accounts. His achievements include generating a 20% sales increase after restructuring and revitalizing the company’s national independent commercial sales force, managing more than 60 independent representatives, introducing sourced products for the educational marketplace, and opening more than 15 new accounts across multiple channels. His national account experience encompasses major organizations including Amazon, Walmart, Target, Walgreens, Kroger, Staples, Office Depot/OfficeMax, Sam’s Club, and other prominent retailers and distributors.
Throughout his career, David has developed a particularly broad understanding of how products move from concept to market and ultimately become sustainable commercial businesses. His expertise encompasses strategic planning, product development, sales management, business development, global sales and marketing, P&L management, operations, sourcing, distribution, licensing, negotiation, channel strategy, customer management, mergers and acquisitions integration, and revenue and profit improvement. He combines this strategic breadth with a hands-on commercial mentality. Rather than viewing leadership solely from the executive suite, David has consistently remained close to customers, sales organizations, products, channels, and the operational realities that determine whether a strategy ultimately succeeds.
David’s perspective is also distinctly international. His career has provided exposure to Europe and Asia as well as international sourcing, manufacturing relationships, distribution, and commercial development. At Zip Notes, for example, he negotiated international distribution agreements that extended sales and distribution into 25 countries. Across other leadership positions, he has coordinated with overseas sourcing offices and factories on pricing, factory audits, testing, purchasing, and related commercial considerations. This combination of domestic market leadership and international exposure enables him to consider growth through the interconnected lenses of customer demand, supply capabilities, product economics, distribution, and market opportunity.
Beyond his operating responsibilities, David has developed meaningful governance and industry experience. He previously served as an Advisory Board Member of the School & Office Products Network and has held board and executive board positions with the School, Home and Office Products Association, as well as board involvement with its Buyer to Seller trade show association. He has also contributed as a fundraising committee member for the Kids In Need Foundation. Throughout his executive career, presentations to directors, customers, sales organizations, and business stakeholders have been a recurring responsibility, and he has frequently spoken about products, business strategies, organizational performance, and commercial growth.
As David looks toward the next chapter of his career, board and advisory service represents a natural extension of the experience he has accumulated as an operator, strategist, commercial leader, and business builder. He is particularly interested in contributing to manufacturing organizations and is open to businesses across different sizes and stages of development. As he prepares to step back from his current full-time executive responsibilities, his objective is not to step away from business, but rather to remain actively involved by helping organizations better understand themselves, identify opportunities, strengthen their market positions, and build pathways toward sustainable growth.
At the center of David’s leadership philosophy is a belief in reinvention through innovation and lasting market penetration. His career demonstrates an ability to move comfortably between strategy and execution, combining the perspective of a senior executive with the commercial instincts of a business developer and the discipline of a P&L leader. Whether advising an established manufacturer, supporting a growing enterprise, helping commercialize a new product, coaching leadership, or contributing in the boardroom, David brings decades of lessons learned from building teams, serving customers, entering markets, navigating change, and turning strategic ideas into measurable business results. Away from business, he enjoys fishing, camping, and skiing, interests that complement a professional life defined by energy, persistence, and continued engagement.
