Daniel “Dan” Needham: Connecting People and Strategy to Build What’s Next

“Let’s Get Connected.”

Daniel “Dan” Needham is a seasoned executive leader whose career has been defined by strategic growth, operational excellence, financial discipline, and an enduring commitment to developing people. Following more than four decades of professional experience, including 26 years with Nucor Corporation, Dan brings the perspective of an executive who has led through changing markets, significant growth initiatives, operational challenges, and enterprise-wide transformation. His experience spans finance, operations, commercial strategy, manufacturing, energy, construction, and leadership development, giving him a multidimensional understanding of how successful organizations turn strategy into sustainable results.

Dan concluded his Nucor career as Executive Vice President of Commercial, where he helped lead enterprise commercial strategy for a steel and steel products manufacturer generating more than $35 billion in revenue. In this capacity, he worked across major markets including automotive, energy, and construction, identifying opportunities to expand market penetration, strengthen customer relationships, and create differentiated value. He also helped shape channel-to-market strategies across product groups and evaluated growth opportunities designed to increase enterprise value while supporting broader strategic objectives. As a corporate executive, Dan was closely involved with key customer relationships and brought an enterprise perspective to the intersection of commercial strategy, operations, sustainability, and long-term growth.

Before assuming his enterprise commercial responsibilities, Dan served as Executive Vice President of Nucor’s Bar Products Group. He provided leadership across 16 steel mills and more than 50 steel fabrication locations throughout the United States, helping align strategy, operational execution, market positioning, and organizational development across a complex business network. His responsibilities included advancing corporate growth strategies and participating as a member of the Corporate Executive Team. Dan also presented strategic growth proposals to Nucor’s Board of Directors, including a recommendation for a new greenfield steel mill in the mid-Atlantic region, and participated in Board meetings and quarterly earnings calls involving the Fortune 100 company’s strategic initiatives.

Dan’s progression to the executive level was built on years of hands-on operating leadership. From 2011 through 2021, he served as General Manager of steel divisions in Connecticut, Utah, and Indiana, where he developed and implemented strategic plans, led operational improvement initiatives, strengthened safety performance, and expanded market opportunities. At one division, his leadership helped move the organization from among the weakest safety performers in the enterprise to one of its strongest in less than three years. He also developed Nucor’s first regional strategy for its Western Region, bringing multiple divisions together around greater collaboration, shared priorities, and coordinated execution.

One of the defining themes of Dan’s career has been his ability to connect long-range strategy with practical execution. He helped lead the development of a strategic plan for Nucor’s sheet mill group that contributed to approval of a new greenfield mill and additional growth strategies aligned with market expansion and operational capabilities. Earlier in his career, as a Department Manager across Nucor operations in North Carolina, Alabama, Texas, and Utah, he led financial, commercial, and operational functions at three start-up divisions. His responsibilities included strategic planning, budgeting, cross-functional leadership, process improvement, and financial management, including leading a divisional finance function through the challenging economic environment of the 2008–2010 recession.

Although Dan has built an extensive record of commercial and operational accomplishments, he considers the development of people to be among the most meaningful measures of leadership. Throughout his career, he has coached emerging leaders, built collaborative teams, and created environments in which individuals are encouraged to take responsibility, grow their capabilities, and succeed together. His development efforts contributed to eight direct reports advancing to General Manager roles and ten supervisors progressing to Department Manager positions. This commitment reflects a leadership philosophy centered on connection: organizations become stronger when leaders understand their people, communicate purpose clearly, and create opportunities for others to succeed.

Dan also brings substantial experience communicating with audiences ranging from corporate boards and executive teams to customers, industry organizations, and public officials. He has spoken at numerous industry conferences, including steel-market engagements, and has provided testimony at a congressional hearing. His ability to translate complex commercial, operational, and strategic issues into clear messages has made communication an important dimension of his leadership. Today, he is further developing this passion through a public-speaking presentation centered on leadership connections and the role meaningful relationships play in building successful organizations.

His professional perspective has also been shaped by international exposure across Asia, Germany, and other parts of Europe, complementing decades of experience in American manufacturing and industrial markets. Dan’s expertise encompasses finance, operations, strategic planning, commercial strategy, execution, revenue growth, team building, process improvement, sustainability, customer engagement, and leadership development. His background allows him to approach organizational challenges from multiple viewpoints rather than through a single functional lens, considering financial performance alongside operational realities, market dynamics, human capital, and long-term strategic objectives.

Dan earned his Bachelor of Science in Commerce with a concentration in Accounting from the University of Virginia, where he was also involved in baseball. His continued executive development has included Harvard Executive Strategic Planning as well as training in the Covey 7 Habits, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and Total Quality Management. This combination of financial education, operational methodology, executive strategy, and decades of practical leadership experience has given him a disciplined yet adaptable approach to decision-making.

Following his retirement from Nucor in 2026, Dan became President of Willa Grace Enterprises, where he focuses on leadership training, connections, and coaching. The work represents a natural continuation of the aspect of his corporate career he found especially rewarding: helping people become more effective leaders and connecting individuals around shared objectives. He also serves as Co-Chair of the 2026 American Cancer Society Charlotte Taste of Hope, supporting one of Charlotte’s major fundraising initiatives for the organization. His board and committee experience further includes nonprofit service and prior involvement with an MSCI board committee.

Dan is now actively interested in expanding his contribution through board and advisory service. With the time and bandwidth to engage meaningfully, he is particularly interested in opportunities where his experience can help leadership teams sharpen strategy, strengthen execution, develop talent, and pursue responsible growth. Manufacturing and energy are natural areas of interest given his background, though he remains open to opportunities across industries where his perspective can create value. He is especially interested in bringing a collaborative rather than prescriptive approach to the boardroom—asking thoughtful questions, drawing upon decades of experience, and helping executives and fellow directors work toward long-term organizational objectives.

Away from his professional activities, Dan enjoys sports and reading history, interests that complement his curiosity about leadership, competition, decision-making, and the lessons that can be drawn from the past. His personal motto, “Let’s Get Connected,” captures more than a networking philosophy. It reflects his belief that meaningful relationships, open communication, teamwork, and shared purpose are fundamental to effective leadership. As Dan enters this next chapter, he brings the experience of a senior corporate executive together with the energy of a coach and mentor, seeking opportunities to give back and help organizations and their leaders build enduring success.
