“Your procrastination is not my fire drill—great leadership is built on preparation, accountability, and financial discipline.”
Crystal Ferns, CCIFP, is a seasoned finance executive, business partner, and construction industry leader whose career spans three decades of financial management, operational leadership, and strategic business growth. Throughout her career, she has developed a reputation for bringing structure to complexity, strengthening financial operations, and helping organizations navigate growth with confidence. With deep expertise in construction finance, real estate development, affordable housing, and risk management, Crystal has consistently served as a trusted advisor to executive leadership teams, helping organizations make informed decisions that balance financial performance with long-term strategic objectives. Her combination of technical financial expertise and operational business acumen makes her an exceptional executive and a highly qualified candidate for corporate board service.
Currently serving as Vice President of Finance and Partner at Paragon Construction Company, Crystal plays an integral role in shaping both the financial direction and overall business strategy of the organization. Since co-founding the company in 2020, she has been responsible for overseeing financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, internal controls, and organizational financial planning. Her leadership extends beyond traditional accounting functions, positioning finance and risk as a strategic driver of growth, profitability, and operational excellence. As a partner, she understands firsthand the responsibilities of ownership, balancing financial stewardship with long-term organizational sustainability.
Before joining Paragon Construction Company, Crystal spent more than five years with Katerra Affordable Housing, formerly United Renovations Specialty Group, where she steadily advanced from Senior Accountant to Director of Finance and Accounting. During this period, she led the financial operations supporting affordable housing renovation and construction projects across multiple markets. Her responsibilities included developing financial processes, improving reporting systems, managing accounting operations, and ensuring financial compliance within highly regulated construction environments. Working in affordable housing also provided Crystal with valuable insight into mission-driven development, government funding structures, and the financial complexities associated with housing initiatives that positively impact communities.
Crystal’s understanding of the real estate development lifecycle was further strengthened during her time as Development Coordinator for The Wolff Company, where she supported multifamily development projects from planning through execution. This experience expanded her perspective beyond accounting by exposing her to development strategy, project coordination, entitlement processes, budgeting, scheduling, and collaboration with architects, contractors, investors, and municipal stakeholders. The role gave her a comprehensive understanding of how financial decisions influence every stage of the development process, allowing her to become an even more effective financial leader within construction and real estate organizations.
Earlier in her career, Crystal spent more than seven years as a Project Accountant with Trillium Residential, specializing in construction and property management accounting. During this time, she developed the strong technical foundation that continues to support her executive leadership today. She managed project accounting, cost reporting, contract administration, reconciliations, budgeting, accounts payable and receivable, and financial reporting across multiple residential construction projects. Her experience working directly with project managers and operational teams allowed her to understand the financial realities of field operations, creating a collaborative leadership style that bridges accounting with project execution.
Crystal’s professional foundation also includes experience with Haydon Building Corporation, where she served as Accounts Payable Coordinator and Contract Administrator, as well as Liberty Tax Service, where she gained valuable exposure to tax preparation and financial compliance. These early roles strengthened her understanding of accounting fundamentals while reinforcing the importance of accuracy, organization, and process discipline. Over the years, each position has contributed to her comprehensive understanding of financial operations across multiple stages of business growth—from startup environments to mature organizations.
Academically, Crystal earned her Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Western Governors University and further distinguished herself by earning the Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional (CCIFP) designation, one of the construction industry’s most respected financial credentials. She has also completed CompTIA Project+ certification, reflecting her appreciation for disciplined project execution and operational efficiency. As an active member of the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA), Crystal remains engaged with industry best practices and continuously expands her knowledge of construction finance, regulatory changes, and emerging financial trends.
Crystal’s leadership philosophy is grounded in accountability, preparation, and disciplined execution. Her personal motto, “Your procrastination is not my fire drill,” reflects her commitment to proactive planning, responsible decision-making, and creating systems that minimize unnecessary risk. Colleagues value her direct communication style, steady leadership under pressure, and ability to establish financial processes that support organizational success. She believes that the strongest organizations are built through transparency, disciplined governance, and financial integrity, and she consistently models those values throughout her leadership approach.
As a prospective board member, Crystal offers organizations a unique combination of financial oversight, operational experience, risk management and strategic business insight. Her expertise spans construction finance, startup growth, insurance, risk management, financial controls, budgeting, forecasting, property management, affordable housing, and executive leadership. She would bring exceptional value to Audit, Finance, Risk, Governance, Strategic Planning, and Investment Committees, particularly for organizations operating within construction, manufacturing, real estate development, housing, infrastructure, and privately held companies. Having served both as a senior executive and business partner, Crystal understands the balance between protecting stakeholder interests while enabling sustainable growth, making her a highly effective advisor for organizations seeking experienced financial leadership at the board level.
