Coby began his career in 1979 as a welder, working on projects throughout the southern and western United States. These early years were formative, providing him with a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, safety, field operations, and the realities of frontline work. He rose steadily through the craft ranks, earning roles as Pipe Fitter, Combination Welder, Rig Welder, and later as Foreman, General Foreman, and Superintendent. This hands-on foundation would ultimately shape his leadership style, grounding his decision-making in practical experience and respect for the people who execute the work.
His technical talent and leadership potential quickly attracted opportunities for advancement. In 1990, after already serving in senior field supervisory roles, Coby entered Chicago Bridge & Iron’s prestigious Weld Engineer training program. Balancing a demanding workload with a steadfast desire to grow academically, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Management through night and weekend coursework while maintaining a travel schedule that took him across domestic and international sites. This period marked the beginning of a pivotal transformation in his career as he transitioned from field operations into technical engineering, quality assurance, business development, and executive leadership.
At CB&I, Coby held numerous positions of increasing responsibility, including Welding Engineer, QA Manager, Mechanical Superintendent, Project Manager, Product Line Manager, Strategic Account Manager, and ultimately Senior Business Development Manager. His influence extended across contract negotiations, customer relationship management, proposal development, technical leadership, and field execution. Notably, he became a patent holder for the company’s Vertical Plate Coke Drum Technology, a landmark innovation demonstrating his ability to blend practical field knowledge with engineering ingenuity and strategic vision.
Coby later took on senior leadership roles at Fluor, Frontier El Dorado Refinery, and Monroe Energy—where his responsibilities expanded across maintenance, engineering, reliability, small and large capital construction, inspections, and turnaround management. His leadership at Monroe Energy was particularly impactful, overseeing more than 125 employees and up to 2,000 contractors while maintaining a disciplined focus on safety, operational performance, and organizational effectiveness. His ability to communicate clearly, make data-driven decisions, and align diverse teams around shared objectives became hallmarks of his executive style.
One of Coby’s most impressive career achievements was leading the turnaround and startup of a 205,000-barrel-per-day idled refinery. Under his direction, the facility returned to safe, reliable, on-spec operation within 90 days—a massive undertaking involving 1.2 million work hours and extensive coordination across technical disciplines. This milestone showcased the operational discipline, strategic foresight, and team-oriented leadership that have defined his legacy in the industry.
In 2018, Coby became Chief Operating Officer of PK Companies, where he served as both a board member and senior executive responsible for guiding four separate businesses under a unified leadership model. His direct P&L oversight of PK Technologies and his leadership of enterprise-wide sales efforts demonstrate his ability to bridge technical depth with business acumen. His influence helped position the organization for sustainable growth through innovation in digital inspection, data integrity, and service integration across the energy sector.
Beyond his executive accomplishments, Coby has been a prolific contributor to industry knowledge through technical publications, conference presentations, and standards discussions with organizations such as ASME, AIChE, API, and AWS. His international work in Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia, Dubai, Australia, and the Caribbean further broadened his global perspective, enhancing his ability to lead multicultural teams and navigate complex project environments.
Despite an extensive list of achievements, Coby remains grounded in his values. He is an advocate for mentorship, workforce development, and leadership coaching, believing strongly in preparing the next generation to lead with integrity.
