Brian Hanlen stands as a pillar of innovation and resilience in the architecture and construction industries. With over 38 years of experience, he has forged a career rooted in strategic thinking, high-level craftsmanship, and an unyielding dedication to aesthetic and structural integrity. His journey is defined by a deep understanding of design, a hands-on approach to building, and a visionary’s eye for opportunity and transformation. As Owner and President of Brooks Design / Build, Inc., Brian has transformed hundreds of spaces, lives, and communities, offering more than just structures—he delivers stories in stone, steel, and glass.

Brian’s career began in the mid-1980s, laying literal foundations in carpentry with Brooks Construction. His early experience framed his commitment to detail, quality, and the tactile satisfaction of bringing ideas to life with his own hands. From multi-piece crown moldings to complex custom staircases, Brian mastered the art of construction at the granular level. These formative years instilled a precision and pride in execution that would follow him throughout his ascent in the industry.

The 1990s saw Brian’s progression into project and construction management roles, notably with Daniel Olson Construction. Here, he began to flex his skills in land planning, proforma development, contract negotiation, and risk mitigation. He became adept at bridging the gap between visionary design and grounded execution. At a time when many professionals chose specialization, Brian chose integration—embedding himself in every stage of development, from site grading and formwork to subdivision guidelines and public presentations.

In 1996, Brian founded Brooks Design / Build, Inc., a firm that became an extension of his personal philosophy: a holistic approach to architecture and construction that prioritized synergy between structure, budget, and beauty. His leadership at Brooks has spanned three decades and covered everything from residential and commercial design to expert witness work in construction litigation. Brian’s influence is seen not only in the buildings he creates but in the smooth, collaborative processes he champions. Clients know him not just as a builder, but as a trusted advisor who merges creativity with cost control and function with form.

Brian’s tenure as Senior Project Manager with Structural Associates (2013–2021) and later with Hansen Construction (2021–2024) further sharpened his leadership in budget creation, subcontractor negotiation, moisture mitigation, risk management, and value engineering. His ability to identify potential design and build conflicts early on is a testament to his depth of knowledge and anticipation. Whether detailing intricate cabinetry or overseeing civil and structural systems, Brian brings both vision and vigilance to the table.

His contributions to the civic landscape extend beyond construction. From 2008 to 2015, Brian served on the Steamboat Springs Planning Commission. During this time, he helped revamp city processes and shape significant urban development initiatives, including UGB amendments, TND zoning implementation, and the overhaul of a 700-acre annexation project. Brian’s work on the commission demonstrated not only technical acumen but also diplomacy, civic-mindedness, and an unwavering focus on long-term community benefit.

Brian’s approach is deeply collaborative, often navigating the intricate web of stakeholders that includes architects, engineers, inspectors, insurers, and municipal entities. As an owner’s representative and special inspector, he advocates for clients while maintaining a high standard of compliance and quality. His dual fluency in creative and regulatory language makes him a uniquely effective leader in both boardrooms and job sites.

Internationally, Brian’s experience in China and his basic command of Chinese language enrich his global perspective, positioning him well for ventures beyond domestic borders. His multicultural engagement adds a valuable layer of versatility and awareness, traits essential for modern governance and strategic decision-making.

Off the job site, Brian lives his values through a life filled with sport, nature, and family. A former competitive freestyle skier who qualified for the U.S. Nationals in Aerials in 1995, he now channels that energy into skiing, swimming, and biking with his daughter. Whether on the slopes or in the shop, he is a teacher, a doer, and a relentless learner.

Now, as he looks toward board service, Brian seeks opportunities to leverage his decades of strategic, operational, and creative experience for organizations ready to evolve. He sees himself as a problem solver—a bridge between where a company is today and the innovative future it could achieve. With Boardsi opening the door, Brian is ready to step into a new phase of leadership: one where his rare blend of tactical expertise and strategic vision can bring exponential value.
