“Question Things. Think Outside the Box.”

Wayne Fu is a highly accomplished treasury, investment, and corporate finance executive whose career has been defined by a relentless pursuit of strategic excellence, financial innovation, and transformational leadership. With more than twenty-seven years of professional experience spanning public corporations, private enterprises, higher education institutions, government organizations, and international businesses, Wayne has built a reputation as a trusted advisor capable of navigating complexity and delivering sustainable results. His unique blend of financial expertise, analytical rigor, and collaborative leadership has enabled organizations across multiple sectors to strengthen financial performance, optimize capital structures, and position themselves for long-term success.

Throughout his career, Wayne has demonstrated an exceptional ability to bridge strategy and execution. His professional journey began with foundational finance and advisory roles that provided exposure to corporate analysis, restructuring, and financial planning. Early experiences with Canadian Airlines and PricewaterhouseCoopers allowed him to develop a comprehensive understanding of financial operations, corporate performance management, and business advisory services. These formative years established the framework for a career centered on helping organizations solve complex financial challenges while creating opportunities for growth and innovation.

Wayne’s career expanded internationally when he joined Emirates Airline in Dubai, where he gained valuable global experience managing treasury functions related to foreign exchange exposure, interest rate risk, and surplus cash investments. Working within one of the world’s most recognized aviation organizations provided him with exposure to sophisticated financial markets, multinational business environments, and large-scale treasury operations. This international perspective continues to influence his strategic thinking today, enabling him to approach challenges with a broad, globally informed mindset while remaining focused on practical business outcomes.

Building on this experience, Wayne advanced into increasingly senior treasury and finance leadership positions within the energy, infrastructure, and industrial sectors. At organizations such as Walton International Group and Pristine Power, he further developed his expertise in cash management, project financing, debt compliance, investor relations, and corporate treasury operations. These roles deepened his understanding of how financial strategy directly impacts operational success and reinforced his belief that effective capital allocation and risk management are fundamental drivers of organizational growth.

One of the most significant chapters of Wayne’s career was his tenure with Veresen Inc., where he served in senior finance leadership roles for more than six years. During this period, he played a central role in financing initiatives exceeding $3 billion while leading multiple project financings and refinancings totaling approximately $600 million. His expertise in lender negotiations, debt structuring, foreign exchange hedging, and interest rate risk management contributed directly to the company’s ability to execute strategic initiatives and create shareholder value. Among his notable achievements was leading the foreign exchange hedging strategy for a US$1.4 billion acquisition, generating approximately $36 million in cost savings while protecting the organization from significant market volatility. His work demonstrated not only technical excellence but also a keen ability to identify innovative solutions that enhanced financial outcomes.

Wayne’s experience in renewable energy further strengthened his reputation as a strategic finance leader. As Project Finance Consultant for BluEarth Renewables, he successfully led financing efforts for approximately $300 million in renewable energy projects, including wind and hydroelectric developments. His contributions supported the advancement of critical infrastructure projects while reinforcing his expertise in project finance, capital markets, and sustainable investment initiatives. This experience also expanded his understanding of emerging industries and reinforced his ability to adapt financial strategies to evolving market conditions.

In 2018, Wayne joined the University of Calgary as Director of Treasury & Investments, where he assumed responsibility for more than $2 billion in operating and endowment assets. In this highly influential role, he advised executive leadership and the Investment Committee on asset allocation strategies, investment performance, liquidity management, and risk assessment. Recognizing opportunities to strengthen the institution’s investment capabilities, Wayne designed and implemented the university’s private markets investment program. Under his leadership, approximately US$200 million was committed to private equity and infrastructure investments through a rigorous process of manager selection, due diligence, governance development, and ongoing monitoring. His efforts helped position the university for stronger long-term returns while enhancing institutional investment practices.

Beyond portfolio management, Wayne consistently demonstrated a commitment to innovation and operational excellence. At the University of Calgary, he developed sophisticated investment tracking systems and cash forecasting models that significantly improved internal reporting, monitoring, and decision-making processes. He also played a key role in facilitating the development of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policies, helping align institutional investment practices with evolving stakeholder expectations and responsible investing principles. These accomplishments reflected his ability to balance strategic vision with practical implementation while driving measurable organizational improvements.

Today, Wayne serves as an Independent Financial Consultant, leveraging decades of experience to help organizations address financial, operational, and strategic challenges. As a Fractional CFO for a Canadian industrial services company, he has successfully restructured reporting frameworks, improved financial transparency, enhanced liquidity planning, negotiated lender flexibility, and secured financing to support growth initiatives. He has also advised public-sector organizations on investment policy development, portfolio strategy, and risk management. His consulting work highlights his versatility and demonstrates how transferable his expertise is across industries, organizational structures, and business environments.

What distinguishes Wayne from many financial leaders is his ability to combine deep technical expertise with mentorship, education, and relationship-building. He believes that successful leadership requires more than financial acumen; it requires the ability to empower others, challenge conventional thinking, and foster a culture of continuous learning. Throughout his career, he has become known for asking insightful questions, encouraging innovative perspectives, and helping organizations see opportunities that may otherwise go unnoticed. His collaborative approach has earned the trust of executive teams, boards, investment committees, lenders, and stakeholders alike.

Wayne’s board and advisory aspirations are a natural extension of his professional journey. Having spent decades helping organizations navigate growth, financing, governance, risk management, and investment decisions, he is passionate about bringing this expertise to boards seeking experienced strategic advisors. He values the opportunity to work alongside leadership teams, contribute to meaningful decision-making, and help organizations overcome challenges while creating sustainable value. His broad experience across public and private sectors, combined with his understanding of governance, capital markets, and institutional investing, makes him a highly valuable boardroom contributor.

Outside of his professional responsibilities, Wayne enjoys golf, sports, reading, and international travel. His experiences living and working internationally, particularly in Dubai, have contributed to his appreciation for diverse perspectives and global business practices. He maintains strong professional relationships throughout the finance, treasury, investment, and banking communities and continues to be motivated by opportunities to learn, teach, and contribute.
