Tony Henshaw is a distinguished international business executive, corporate board leader, and strategic transformation specialist with 39 years of professional experience spanning manufacturing, engineering, mining, oil and gas, and diversified global industries. Throughout his career, he has earned a reputation for navigating complex business challenges, revitalizing underperforming operations, managing high-stakes crises, and developing resilient organizations positioned for sustainable growth. His leadership philosophy is rooted in the belief that long-term business success requires a disciplined combination of financial performance, operational excellence, responsible governance, and meaningful stakeholder engagement. Having held executive and governance responsibilities across multiple continents, Tony brings to the boardroom a rare combination of strategic vision, commercial pragmatism, and firsthand experience leading organizations through periods of significant change.

Tony’s professional journey began in engineering, establishing the technical and analytical foundation that would underpin his subsequent leadership achievements. After earning a Bachelor of Science in General Engineering from the University of Leicester, he began his career with GEC Transportation Projects, contributing to the electrical construction and commissioning of Seoul’s mass transit trains. Recognizing the importance of combining technical expertise with commercial leadership, he subsequently earned an MBA with Distinction from Alliance Manchester Business School, concentrating on international business, finance, and strategy, and completed an MBA exchange program at the Stockholm School of Economics. This multidisciplinary education equipped him to approach business challenges through an integrated perspective encompassing operational realities, financial discipline, and long-term strategic planning.

Tony’s early executive career with Cummins demonstrated his capacity to lead international expansion, organizational restructuring, and complex manufacturing operations. As Director and General Manager of Holset Korea Ltd., he successfully established a manufacturing joint venture supplying major automotive manufacturers, including Daewoo, Kia, and Hyundai. In subsequent leadership responsibilities, he helped restructure European manufacturing operations, delivering approximately $5 million in annual overhead savings and contributing to the division’s return to profitability. As Asian Market Development Manager for Cummins Onan Generators, he expanded export sales through Hong Kong to approximately $150 million annually and secured board-level approval for a $10 million investment in local manufacturing operations in Beijing. These achievements established his expertise in international market development, joint ventures, supply-chain localization, and strategic capital investment.

His reputation as a business turnaround leader was further strengthened at Steelcase Strafor, where he transformed a struggling manufacturing facility in Wales from an annual loss of approximately $1 million into an operation generating $2 million in annual profit. Through disciplined process improvement, production optimization, inventory management, and the application of Japanese manufacturing principles, Tony doubled weekly chair production while significantly improving quality and operational efficiency. He also worked with the Welsh Development Authority to establish a supplier association designed to strengthen local manufacturing capabilities and protect employment throughout the supply chain. This experience exemplified his ability to deliver measurable financial improvements while simultaneously developing the operational systems and relationships necessary to sustain them.

A defining chapter of Tony’s career unfolded in Bolivia, where he held senior leadership positions with Transredes, an energy transportation company associated with Shell. As Vice President of Planning, Analysis and Management Systems, he developed financial models, supported negotiations for major gas transportation agreements, and served as Secretary to the Board of Directors. He subsequently became Vice President of Health, Safety, Environment, Social Affairs and Management Systems, introducing an integrated approach that connected operational performance, financial objectives, stakeholder relationships, and international management standards. Under his leadership, Transredes became the first Bolivian company to achieve an integrated management system certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001. His contributions extended to negotiations involving international financing, infrastructure expansion, and relationships with more than 550 indigenous communities.

Tony’s crisis leadership capabilities were tested when he was appointed Incident Commander following a major 29,000-barrel oil spill into Bolivia’s Rio Desaguadero. Entrusted with responsibility for environmental remediation, compensation activities, and reputation protection, he directed an approximately $40 million response involving 80 international experts and 3,200 local workers. The operation required decisive leadership, complex logistical coordination, and sustained engagement with government authorities, communities, environmental organizations, and other stakeholders. Tony also developed an innovative partnership with CARE Bolivia to administer compensation through sustainable development initiatives benefiting 127 indigenous communities. This experience reinforced a principle that has remained central to his career: effective crisis management must extend beyond immediate recovery to rebuilding trust, strengthening accountability, and preventing future failures.

Building upon his operational and crisis management experience, Tony assumed the position of Corporate Vice President of Sustainability at CEMEX, ($13bn, 26 counties) one of the world’s leading building materials companies. There, he developed sustainable development management and reporting systems designed to strengthen the company’s competitiveness in an evolving global economy. He led improvements in health, safety, environmental, and social management practices, helping reduce lost-time injury rates from 10.3 to 3.2 per million hours worked and environmental incidents from 552 to 430. His responsibilities also included advancing biodiversity conservation initiatives, strengthening relationships with leading international environmental organizations, and improving sustainability reporting to GRI A+ standards. Through this work, Tony demonstrated that responsible business practices, operational efficiency, and commercial performance could be mutually reinforcing strategic priorities.

Tony subsequently joined Vedanta Resources plc, a FTSE 100 company with operations valued at approximately $16 billion across 10 countries, as Chief Sustainability Officer during a period characterized by significant operational, environmental, financial stakeholder, and reputational challenges. Charged with establishing the company’s corporate sustainability function, he developed a comprehensive governance structure supported by corporate policies, management standards, technical requirements, and detailed implementation guidance. His work aligned Vedanta’s sustainability management framework with internationally recognized expectations, including those of the International Finance Corporation, International Council on Mining and Metals, and OECD. In this role, Tony worked closely with a broad network of international financial institutions, institutional investors, and shareholders, including Standard Chartered, Citibank, Deutsche Bank, J.P. Morgan, and Morgan Stanley, among other members of the company’s loan consortium. He also engaged with major institutional investors and pension funds, including BlackRock, the Church of England, and Aviva, navigating complex financial stakeholder relationships while addressing sustainability, governance, and reputational priorities. By strengthening internal assurance processes, management accountability, corporate reporting, and stakeholder engagement, Tony helped establish a more systematic approach to managing risk and building institutional confidence. His experience at Vedanta highlighted his ability to operate effectively in demanding international business environments where commercial priorities, financial relationships, regulatory obligations, and public expectations intersect.

One of Tony’s most influential leadership appointments came as Chief Sustainability Officer of the Aditya Birla Group ($50 billion annual revenues, 43 counties, 120,000 employees), a multinational conglomerate with operations spanning numerous industries and countries. From 2013 to 2020, he was responsible for developing and implementing the Group’s Sustainable Business Model and Framework, an enterprise-wide approach intended to prepare its businesses for changing economic, environmental, regulatory, and societal conditions. The framework was built around three interconnected pillars: Responsible Stewardship, Strategic Stakeholder Engagement, and Future Proofing. Rather than treating sustainability as an isolated corporate function, Tony positioned it as an essential component of business strategy, risk management, operational excellence, and long-term competitiveness. His responsibilities included implementing Enablon management and compliance systems across 183 operating sites, developing management system audit protocols, strengthening supply-chain oversight, and supporting executive leadership teams in adapting their strategies to emerging global challenges.

At Aditya Birla Group, Tony also personally authored the organization’s first Sustainable Business Report, documenting its approach to building enterprises capable of succeeding within increasingly demanding global conditions. His work contributed to the Group’s broader thought leadership on climate resilience, including the publication <2°C Futures, which examined potential global economic and business scenarios through 2040. He additionally sponsored peer-reviewed scientific research, reflecting his commitment to incorporating credible evidence into strategic decision-making. His approach emphasized that organizations must anticipate future risks and opportunities rather than simply react to immediate compliance requirements. By connecting scientific understanding, stakeholder knowledge, business model innovation, and practical management systems, Tony helped advance a forward-looking philosophy of corporate leadership focused on sustaining competitiveness over decades rather than individual reporting cycles.

Beyond his executive appointments, Tony has contributed to corporate governance and industry leadership through board and advisory roles in the United States, India, and South Korea. His experience includes serving on the Board of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, as well as advisory responsibilities with WBCSD India and the Global Reporting Initiative India. He has also served as a Senior Advisor to Verdantix, supporting research and strategic thinking related to sustainable business management. These roles have enabled him to contribute to discussions surrounding responsible investment, governance effectiveness, financial analysis, operational accountability, and the evolving expectations placed upon multinational enterprises. His experience provides valuable perspective for boards seeking to balance shareholder interests with long-term organizational resilience and stakeholder confidence.

A particularly distinctive dimension of Tony’s leadership is his extensive international exposure and ability to build effective teams across cultural and organizational boundaries. His career has taken him through India, Mexico, Turkey, Venezuela, Bolivia, Sweden, South Korea, and the United States, among other international markets. Fluent in English and proficient in Spanish, he understands the importance of cultural awareness, relationship-building, and clear communication when operating across different regulatory, political, and commercial environments. Throughout his career, he has recruited and developed talented professionals, established high-performing management teams, and mentored emerging leaders. He considers the continued professional success of individuals he has recruited and supported among the most personally rewarding outcomes of his leadership journey.

Tony’s professional expertise encompasses corporate governance, strategic planning, international finance, business restructuring, manufacturing optimization, enterprise risk management, crisis response, supply-chain management, and sustainable business development. His experience includes managing major infrastructure-related challenges, improving complex industrial operations, negotiating with financial institutions and governments, and implementing systems designed to strengthen organizational performance. Importantly, his approach to business transformation does not end when an immediate crisis has been resolved or a financial target achieved. He consistently emphasizes the importance of establishing management disciplines, organizational capabilities, and governance mechanisms that allow improvements to endure and businesses to continue growing responsibly.

Now focused on opportunities to contribute his experience at board and advisory level, Tony is motivated by the prospect of helping organizations navigate uncertainty, pursue strategic growth, and develop enduring competitive advantages. He is particularly interested in engineering, mining, oil and gas, manufacturing, and retail, while remaining open to organizations across other sectors and at varying stages of development. Whether advising an established multinational enterprise, a growing middle-market business, or an ambitious emerging company, he offers an experienced perspective grounded in operational realities and an understanding of the responsibilities of corporate leadership. His ability to evaluate strategic opportunities, challenge assumptions, recognize emerging risks, and support executive teams makes him a valuable contributor to organizations seeking thoughtful, independent guidance.

Outside his professional commitments, Tony enjoys sports and travel, interests that complement his international outlook and appreciation for diverse cultures and experiences. He places significant personal value on mentorship, integrity, continuous learning, and the opportunity to make a lasting contribution to the people and organizations with which he works. His career reflects a consistent commitment to transforming adversity into progress, combining financial discipline with responsible leadership, and building systems that enable organizations to prosper beyond the tenure of any individual executive.
