Tom started his career at EDS, General Motors’ information technology arm, where he quickly learned how outsourcing IT, data and business processes could make companies more nimble, productive and valuable. He focused on the Financial Capital Services vertical market. He embraced and championed pioneering advances in technology, once leading a large-scale sales initiative to architect and implement the first online payment solution for an Internet start-up. Cobbling together resources, systems, providers and processes he made the conceptual a reality. During his tenure there, he closed over $430 million in total outsourcing contracts.
He eventually joined Headstrong, a boutique global consultancy, where he leveraged the then-emerging trend of offshore software engineering to help mid-sized and large global enterprises with their systems integration and software development needs. Charged with leading and growing their stagnant Southern US Region, Tom quickly realized that by blending his cost-effective engineers in India and the Philippines with onsite consultants, and by modifying their engineering methodology to Agile to match that of his customers, he could differentiate his services in a rapidly saturating market by more seamlessly aligning with clients to accelerate their business goals. Within 15 months, Tom grew his annual revenue run rate from $1.2 to $4.6 million – a 383% improvement at an operating margin of 52%, the highest of all US-based regions.
One of Tom’s Fortune 500 clients – Pitney Bowes – petitioned Tom to bring his capabilities to work for them directly. During his 14-year tenure Tom quickly showcased his transformational skills by launching and globally scaling a new eCommerce online store to create a new revenue channel and meet the needs of their underserved small market and reseller accounts. He then worked with his COO to mitigate headcount loss in a receding market, by using that platform as a digital fulfillment capability as well, cutting production expenses by $3.2 million annually and accelerating customer onboarding from weeks to days. As a global transformation project lead, he played a key role in helping the organization achieve $1.5 billion in operational cost savings. He helped refine the customer experience away from a siloed view to a more consistent experience across the company, which improved customer satisfaction scores by over 40%, further cementing his reputation as a strategic thinker and efficiency expert.
Most recently, Tom shifted into a new role in a new vertical with a higher education institution, taking his practical business experiences in program management and team empowerment to build and bring their fledgling corporate training and leadership development offering to market. He jumped in to define the go-to-market and branding strategy, productize and even present on select training topics in leadership development, sales and operations. He expanded the college’s client relationships and refined internal sales operations and dashboard reporting needs systemically and with best-in-class processes, resulting in $1.3 million revenue from new corporate clients. He also successfully deployed a new online registration and payment experience for students, bringing improved revenue streams and user experiences to bear and further solidifying the institution’s position as a leader in higher education in the north Texas region. In six weeks post implementation, the college had enrolled over 5,000 new students and earned over $600,000 in new tuition income.
Tom now also runs a private consultancy – C2O, guiding his personal clients to bring their business chaos into order.
An advocate for continuous learning, Tom earned his BA specializing in Mass Communication/Media Studies. He has also completed certifications in leadership, project management, remote team management, and helping clients succeed, equipping him with the tools to navigate modern business challenges.
