With more than five decades of executive leadership spanning natural resources, energy, international commodities, strategic procurement, and global supply chain management, Stuart B. Ehrenreich has built a career defined by innovation, operational excellence, and the ability to anticipate industry shifts before they become mainstream realities. Recognized internationally as one of the foremost experts in petroleum coke and carbon feedstocks, Stuart has spent his career helping organizations solve complex business challenges while developing resilient supply chains that support critical industries around the world. His rare combination of entrepreneurial vision, commercial expertise, and strategic thinking has made him a trusted advisor to multinational corporations, emerging technology companies, and organizations navigating periods of transformation.

Stuart began his professional career after earning a Bachelor of Science in Geology with a minor in Civil Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and completing graduate studies in Mineral Economics at the Arizona School of Mines. His early experience in purchasing, mining operations, and materials management provided him with a deep appreciation for the operational realities of industrial businesses. From managing procurement during the first oil crisis to overseeing mining and manufacturing operations, he quickly established himself as a leader capable of balancing technical knowledge with sound commercial judgment. Those formative years laid the groundwork for a career centered on solving operational problems and creating long-term strategic value.

An entrepreneur at heart, Stuart demonstrated his business-building capabilities when he founded Pacific Basin Resources, the first independent coal and petroleum coke trading company headquartered in the western United States. Under his leadership, the company grew from a startup into a highly successful enterprise generating more than $50 million in annual sales within six years before its profitable acquisition by Oxbow Resources. During this period, Stuart expanded operations into coal production, petroleum coke, metallurgical coke, gypsum, bauxite, clinker, transportation, and terminal development while managing multidisciplinary teams and establishing an international commercial presence. His ability to identify emerging markets and execute growth strategies became a defining characteristic of his leadership style.

Throughout his career, Stuart has consistently demonstrated exceptional expertise in international business development and global commodity trading. His executive roles with Island Creek of China Coal Company, SSM Coal, Koch Mineral Services, and Alcoa allowed him to develop extensive commercial relationships across North America, Europe, and Asia. Having lived and worked in China, Singapore, and Rotterdam while leading projects throughout Thailand, India, and other international markets, he possesses a truly global perspective on industrial supply chains and cross-cultural business operations. His pioneering efforts introduced new markets for Spanish gypsum, Vietnamese anthracite, Chinese barite, and Korean petroleum coke while strengthening global trade networks for industrial raw materials.

As Vice President of Trading and Business Development for Koch Mineral Services, Stuart delivered one of the most notable financial turnarounds of his career. He transformed an underperforming international trading business from a multi-million-dollar annual loss into a highly profitable operation while simultaneously reducing overhead costs and expanding market opportunities. Among his many accomplishments was the development of a Thai cement and clinker trading initiative that generated approximately $16 million in annual after-tax earnings. His ability to improve profitability through disciplined operational execution, innovative market development, and strategic customer relationships reinforced his reputation as a results-oriented executive capable of creating sustainable enterprise value.

Stuart later joined Alcoa as Director of Global Green Coke and Anode Procurement, where he assumed responsibility for worldwide carbon sourcing strategy supporting the company’s global aluminum smelting operations. In this role, he oversaw procurement, logistics, inventory management, trading, and commercial strategy for one of the world’s largest industrial consumers of petroleum coke and carbon products. His expertise extended beyond procurement into refinery relationships, calcining operations, transportation networks, inventory optimization, and long-term supply security. His leadership contributed to improving operational efficiency while ensuring reliable access to one of the aluminum industry’s most critical raw materials.

Today, Stuart serves as Director of Cascade Resources and Consulting while also leading strategic planning initiatives for Cascade Carbon Corporation. Through these organizations, he advises companies operating across the energy, manufacturing, carbon, mining, industrial minerals, and advanced materials sectors. His consulting work focuses on strategic procurement, supply chain optimization, mergers and acquisitions, operational improvement, startup development, and international business expansion. From 2023 through 2025, he also served as petroleum coke procurement advisor to Vianode, supporting the production of battery-grade synthetic graphite used in electric vehicle batteries, further positioning himself at the forefront of the evolving energy transition.

One of Stuart’s most influential contributions to industry thought leadership is his research paper, “The Carbon Paradox: Why Electrification Still Depends on Oil.” Drawing upon decades of practical experience, the paper explores the often-overlooked relationship between premium petroleum coke, synthetic graphite production, aluminum manufacturing, and electric vehicle batteries. Stuart argues that while much attention has focused on lithium and rare earth minerals, the future of electrification may ultimately depend upon carbon feedstocks derived from oil refining. His work reflects his unique ability to connect global market trends, recognize unintended consequences, and provide strategic insight that challenges conventional thinking while helping organizations prepare for future supply chain realities.

Beyond his commercial accomplishments, Stuart is widely respected as a mentor, advisor, and operational strategist. Organizations frequently seek his expertise when confronting startup challenges, organizational restructuring, procurement modernization, contract administration, and business process improvement. His philosophy centers on understanding how decisions made in one industry often create significant downstream consequences in others, allowing leaders to make more informed long-term decisions. This systems-thinking approach, combined with decades of executive leadership experience, makes him an exceptionally valuable contributor in the boardroom.

Stuart’s distinguished military service further reflects the leadership values that have guided his entire career. As a decorated Captain in the United States Army, he served with the 82nd Airborne Division, the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam, Military Intelligence, and the Defense Investigative Service. His numerous honors include the Bronze Star, Air Medal, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and Jump Master qualification. Today, he continues serving fellow veterans through volunteer transportation services for the Department of Veterans Affairs and as Finance Officer for the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Away from work, he enjoys boating, scuba diving, gourmet cooking, private aviation, adventure travel, and learning from businesses around the world. Motivated by intellectual curiosity and a desire to remain engaged, Stuart continues consulting, writing, speaking internationally, and pursuing board service opportunities where his broad executive experience, strategic insight, and global perspective can help organizations navigate an increasingly complex future.
