Steve Twersky: Turning Financial Complexity Into Clarity, Strategy, and Lasting Institutional Value

Published on:

Steve Twersky is a seasoned banking and capital markets executive whose career spans more than four decades of leadership in investment portfolio strategy, balance sheet management, fixed income, accounting, analytics, and financial institution advisory services. Having recently retired from FHN Financial after a distinguished career serving banks and credit unions, Steve is entering his next professional chapter with a clear purpose: to put his experience, judgment, and industry perspective to work for organizations that can benefit from seasoned financial leadership. Through board, advisory, and consulting roles, he brings the perspective of an executive who has spent his career helping financial institutions understand complex challenges, manage risk, evaluate opportunities, and make informed decisions in changing economic and regulatory environments.

Steve’s foundation in finance was established at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree with honors in 1982. He began his professional career with Arthur Andersen & Co. in Memphis, serving primarily banking and capital markets clients and advancing to Senior Auditor. Those formative years provided Steve with rigorous accounting discipline and a detailed understanding of financial reporting, controls, valuation, and the operational realities facing financial institutions. He subsequently earned his CPA credential and, throughout his career, held FINRA Series 3, 6, 7, 24, 53, and 63 licenses, reflecting the breadth of his exposure to securities, investments, markets, and financial services.

In 1984, Steve joined FHN Financial, beginning what would become a defining professional relationship spanning most of his career. He progressed through increasingly senior positions within the organization, ultimately becoming Senior Vice President of the Portfolio Strategies Group. In this capacity, Steve provided analytical support, portfolio guidance, and balance sheet recommendations to banks and credit unions while helping develop an expanding range of institutional support capabilities. His work combined technical financial knowledge with an ability to translate complex market dynamics into practical strategies that financial executives could evaluate and implement.

Steve briefly left FHN Financial in 2006 to join Cantor Fitzgerald as Managing Director of its Financial Services Group. He was recruited to help rebuild Cantor’s depository middle-market debt capital business, bringing his experience in banking, capital markets, portfolio analytics, and financial institution relationships to the organization. During his tenure, he helped develop core analytical systems that continued to support the business. After approximately 15 months, Steve was recruited back to FHN Financial to assume broader leadership responsibility for its depository support platform—an opportunity that marked the next major phase of his executive career.

Returning to FHN Financial in 2007 as Executive Vice President, Steve assumed leadership of a comprehensive depository support platform serving more than 2,000 banks and credit unions. His responsibilities encompassed three key areas: Portfolio Strategies, Portfolio Accounting and Analytics, and ALM Advisors. Under this broad mandate, he oversaw professionals and capabilities designed to help financial institutions navigate investment decisions, interest-rate exposure, accounting requirements, asset-liability management, and increasingly complex regulatory and market conditions. His leadership required more than technical expertise; it demanded the ability to coordinate specialized teams while keeping their work centered on the strategic needs of financial institution clients.

One of the most significant dimensions of Steve’s leadership involved the Portfolio Accounting and Analytics operation and its proprietary PASPort platform. The group delivered extensive portfolio accounting services to approximately one in every six U.S. banks, including approximately one in four banks with assets between $10 billion and $100 billion. PASPort was developed with the specialized requirements of banks and credit unions in mind, including capabilities addressing complex amortization methodologies and Current Expected Credit Loss, or CECL, accounting. Steve’s experience in this area gives him a distinctive perspective at the intersection of accounting, technology, investments, regulation, and institutional strategy.

His leadership also extended deeply into portfolio and balance sheet strategy. Steve led a Portfolio Strategies team providing analytical support and strategic assistance to bank and credit union clients, while the ALM Advisors business delivered asset-liability modeling and consulting services to more than 300 financial institutions. Across these responsibilities, Steve developed substantial expertise in portfolio management, balance sheet management, interest-rate derivatives, bond accounting, impairment and CECL considerations, regulatory matters, tax issues, CRA considerations, and sophisticated fixed-income structures. His experience encompasses government and U.S. agency securities, municipal bonds, mortgage-backed securities and mortgage derivatives, corporate and sovereign debt, asset-backed securities, CDOs, and CLOs, giving him an unusually broad view of the instruments and risks that can shape institutional portfolios.

Beyond his direct executive responsibilities, Steve has spent decades contributing to the financial services industry through education and public speaking. He has spoken extensively before banking, credit union, professional, regulatory, and industry audiences, including programs associated with the American Bankers Association, America’s Credit Unions, the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council, the National Credit Union Administration, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Federal Home Loan Banks, the Independent Community Bankers of America, state banking associations, and state CPA associations. His ability to communicate sophisticated financial concepts to varied audiences has made education an important component of his professional contribution. He has also been associated with published industry commentary, including material connected with the American Bankers Association’s publications.

Steve’s value as an advisor is grounded in the combination of technical depth and practical perspective accumulated over more than forty years. He understands that investment and balance sheet decisions cannot be considered in isolation; they intersect with liquidity, accounting treatment, capital, regulation, interest-rate risk, market conditions, institutional objectives, and governance responsibilities. His background enables him to examine those interconnected factors and help leadership teams ask better questions before making consequential decisions. Just as importantly, decades spent working directly with banks and credit unions have given him an appreciation for the differences among institutions and the importance of strategies that fit an organization’s particular circumstances rather than relying on one-size-fits-all solutions.

Now retired from full-time executive leadership, Steve is focused on applying his experience through board, advisory, and consulting opportunities, particularly with banks, credit unions, financial services organizations, and businesses where sophisticated financial oversight can strengthen decision-making. He is especially interested in organizations with 50 or more employees and is open to local, remote, and travel-based opportunities. His objective is not simply to remain active after retirement, but to continue contributing to an industry in which he has invested his entire professional life. He sees board service as an opportunity to provide independent perspective, institutional knowledge, thoughtful challenge, and mentorship while helping management teams and fellow directors navigate both immediate priorities and longer-term strategic questions.

At this stage of his career, Steve brings something that cannot be acquired through technical training alone: perspective developed across multiple economic cycles, changing interest-rate environments, evolving regulations, technological transformation, and shifts in the structure of financial markets. From his beginnings in public accounting to senior leadership at FHN Financial and his experience as a Managing Director at Cantor Fitzgerald, he has consistently operated where finance, strategy, risk, analytics, and client needs converge. His professional philosophy reflects a commitment to disciplined analysis, continuous education, responsible stewardship, and making complicated financial issues understandable enough to support sound decisions. For organizations seeking a board member or advisor with deep banking knowledge and decades of hands-on financial experience, Steve offers both technical credibility and the seasoned judgment that comes from a career devoted to helping financial institutions succeed.
